All players are free to wander around in the city, but you must get to the city before the end of the day, and you must stay in the city once you get there. There is an inn and a tavern on opposite sides of the road just beyond the city square. Taverns are open for business for all comers. Inns normally require payment for tenants, but for the length of the celebration all innkeepers have declared their rooms free of charge.

There are streamers, flags, music, and dancing all around. The shops have all closed for the day, except for a single stubborn blacksmith working late and a seamstress who is finishing up some costumes for those who are in need of weapons or clothing mended.

"Today is the first day of our official celebration of the 25th anniversary of Lord Kelden's reign. The city of Gemmel is bustling with citizens and travelers alike. I myself participated in two dances, before I was required to return to my duties. The king has ordered me to get an estimate of the total amount of bonded youths that have arrived for the celebration.

...I hope His Majesty knows what he is doing. I fear his advisers have been guiding him a bit too much lately. Nevertheless, I will perform my duty. My duties."

Johaan Thoron, 2nd Generation Companion of the Owl, Official Scribe for the King.

Kadence dodged past three people, one of whom had quite obviously been spending time at the tavern, as she made her way down the street. She had one last delivery to make before she could join the celebrations herself.

She finally made it past the bulk of the crowd and stopped to lean against one of the nearby shop buildings. Like most of the other shops, this one was closed. Garret appeared at her side a few moments later. Kadence grinned and reached out to pat her Companion on the head and scratch his ears. He was panting due to the heat and she made a note to find him some water after the letter was delivered.

The courier held a hand up to her forehead and squinted through the sunlight at the store signs. Finally she located the familiar anvil symbol farther down the street. She jogged to the door and knocked three times.

A young teenager with an apron on and soot covering his hands answered the door. Kadence explained that she had a letter to deliver, and the boy informed her that the smith was currently busy, that she could come back later or leave the letter here now. Kadence hesitated.

"He's my grandfather" the boy explained quickly, seeming rather eager to have her gone. Kadence frowned but then realized that the boy had probably wanted to go join the festivities but was stuck working, just as she was. She smiled and held out the letter, noticing a small soot covered mouse on the boy's shoulder as he reached out his hand. She thanked him, which got her a polite nod, then the apprentice shut the door. Kadence took a few steps back and looked down at her companion who returned her gaze silently.

Together they walked in the direction of the crowd.

Lev walked though the city gate, being greeted by two guards with newly polished breastplates holding banners dedicated to the lord, as he passed them he merely nodded in acknowledgment, the festivities weren't really his reason for traveling here.

Halfway down the main street he stopped and undid the top button on his shirt, the heat in this city was unbearable, he had already packed away his coat, but it really didn't seem to help a lot. He slung his backpack back over his shoulder as he cursed silently at the heat, and at the dozens of people around him making merry, just for good measure. But speaking of the heat...

He turned around to look over his other shoulder, and just as predicted, there came his companion slinking along, visibly affected by the heat, and scowling in an accusing manner at Lev.

He sighed as he looked over at her, "Look, it's really not my fault that you can't shed your winter coat quicker, Tatiana. Besides, maybe this will make you behave for once." He said to her in an equally accusing manner, making sure to get the point across.

Tatiana merely scowled more intensely at her companion and growled in what would have normally have been an intimidating manner, but now it only served to show just how much the heat was keeping her down.

The doctor scratched his head, before saying in a mocking manner. "You know, you don't really look very threatening when you're about to collapse from hyperthermia..."

Tatiana growled softly, almost making it look like she was sulking, as she began dragging herself down the main street again.

"Yeah, right... You'll get some water and shade once we're at the inn..." Lev replied as he walked down the street by her side, looking for the closest inn.

Zestia was returning to Gemmel after having been away for a few days for an assassination. Shade was resting on her shoulders and around her neck, making sure not to choke Zestia. She took note of the crowd of people that had gathered for the anniversary and was careful not to bump into many people who seemed like they had had a few too many at some of the taverns in the city.

Shade smelled the air by sticking his tongue out. Or so it would seem, but he was really just trying to tickle Zestia. She giggled when he tickled her with his tongue and he stopped after a little while.

Zestia was a little excited because of the anniversary. This was her home, after all. Lord Kelden had been a great leader in her opinion. Before returning home, she thought an ale would be good to have, so she headed towards her favorite tavern. She walked inside and sat down at front table.
"The usual, please." she said.
After a few moments she was handed her ale and she began drinking.

Ah, always tastes great after a job well done.

Shade wanted some too, but Zestia didn't allow him. "It's not good for you."
Shade rested his head on her shoulder. Zestia asked for another ale. It was brought to her and she looked around the tavern.

Many outsiders today. Though it's good to see the ones here drink reasonably. she thought before turning towards the front table again.

Shade suddenly hissed and Zestia looked back behind her. A man was reaching out for her backpocket when he startled because of Shade's hiss.

"And what do you think you're doing?" Zestia asked the man.
"Well...I...umm..." said the man.
"You were trying to steal from me, weren't you?" Zestia asked.
"No, I wasn't. I was just..." the man said.
"Just go. It's a lost cause for you to try and steal from me. Unless you want to get bitten." Zestia said. Shade raised his head.
The man didn't have to asked twice. He walked out of the tavern and Zestia returned to her ale. Shade rested his head on her shoulder again.

An excited buzz filled the air of the tavern, which was bursting at the seams with patrons from far and wide. The serving girl was having a hard time keeping up with orders, with ale and soup being served from one end of the establishment to the next. The crowded atmosphere and the merry making made her job even more difficult, with upturned bowls and mugs shattering by the minute, coupled with the occasional quarrel breaking out in the ale-fueled excitement of the anniversary.

Not even Cora was nearby to calm her nerves, he was off joining in the celebration in his own way, or more so taking advantage of the abundant stalls and hawkers that now filled the city center selling their wares. The girl shook her head at the thought of her over-indulgent companion, hoping he was controlling himself, yet the thought of him so stuffed with food he would be unable to fly brought a coy smile to her lips. The smile vanished instantly upon the sight of a large cobra resting it's head on the lap of a dark looking character that she initially mistook for a very lean man. There were a lot of companion animals in the city, some of whom would potentially regard her Cora as an overfed feathered treat. She shook away the image of cobras with Cora-sized bulges in their stomachs and concentrated on the woman that accompanied it. She was one of the most interesting looking characters the serving girl had ever seen, and certainly stood out among the burly hirsute men displaying their biceps and chatting up elaborately dressed young women in town for the celebration, and the brothel girls who were common patrons to the bar.

The serving girl subtly glanced at her father, who was busy in conversation with a group of customers adorned in bright purple robes. She took the opportunity to make her way through the crowd up to the interesting looking woman. "Haven't seen one of your type round' these parts," she started, trying subtly hide million questions that threatened to fall from her lips, "What's your story?"

Sai patrolled the streets with Kia weaving in and out of people legs. Her leather armor was making her sweat and Kia was panting. "Whew, we're almost done girl. We just got to make it back to the check point we're off the clock." Sai said happily wiping away sweat from her brow. Kia yipped in agreement.

A few minutes later they arrived at the at open seamstress. They were waved over by a man in metal armor with a hawk perched on his shoulder "Heya, Sid. I hate to be you in that metal armor." Sai said laughing at the man. He stood at about 6 feet a little older than her. His pitch black hair hidden by the helmet. "Yeah yeah, Your shift is over. Go have fun." He said nodded towards the shop. The shop served as a place for guards to store their armor when not on duty. Sai nodded and went in side and took of her armor, and set everything but one of her swords in a cupboard set aside for her. "Alright Kia lets head for an tavern first eh?" She asked her Companion. Kia nodded and followed Sai along the street once more.

They arrived at the tavern a few minutes later. Sai was smiling on a day like this a dance could be offered anywhere at anytime. Like on the corner a few buildings back. They headed inside and sat at a nearby table that was surprisingly empty. "Serving girl!" She called to a waitress not to far away talking with another women. "A moment of your time when you get the chance."

Just as the words escaped her lips, the tavern girl was summoned by newly arriving customer. Crestfallen, she politely excused herself from the shady women and left to attend to the new arrival, glancing at her father, who fortunately, was still engaged with the peculiar purple robed people. As she approached the table, she noticed a grey fox by her feet, and pictured black feathers hanging from its lips. Silly Cora. A shine caught her eye behind the fox. On the hip of the customer rested a finely crafted sword peeking over the edge of its scabbard. Not any sword she observed, subtly inspecting the hilt as she approached, a sword of the City guard. She tentatively approached the table, she had only seen male guards at the tavern before, never a female. 'Perhaps this women is a guard,' she mused, her eyes returning to the fox, an animal notorious for its slyness and cunning, 'or a thief'. Unsure what to make of this odd woman, she approached in her usual waitress-like fashion. "What can I get you today, fair miss?" she asked, flashing her 'friendly barmaid' smile.

"Just a mug of Ale when you get the chance thanks. And a bowl of water for my friend." Sai said with a smile, petting Kia. She studied the waitress for a moment she seamed a little crestfallen. Must have pulled her away from a friend. She guessed. She noticed the maids eyes dart towards Kia. "And don't worry about her. She won't cause any trouble."

The bar girl hurried off to fetch a mug of ale and filled a bowl of water, throwing a curious eye out the back door for Cora as she passed. She returned to the woman with the sword, giving a brief nod as she delivered the ale and placed a bowl before the fox, still distrustful of the pair, thinking them an odd combination. She glanced back towards the shady woman and then across the tavern to her father, who had finished his conversation and was pouring ale for a group of raucous men, he caught her eye and she quickly turned away, hurrying to attend to some patrons who had just arrived and were looking for a seat. "Drats" she muttered under her breath, an opportunity lost. She let out an audible sigh and wiped the sweat from her brow. It is so crowded in the tavern she reasoned, her father is sure to be kept busy again. She glanced back at the mysterious woman whose drink was still moderatey full, a new opportunity would surely present itself soon.

Sam approached the city gates. Immediately he was greeted by the guards, which shocked him a little, and jumped back when he heard the greeting. He had been living out in the woods for so long that the only human tongue he could hear was his own. Then, the noise coming within the busy city was most unsettling. But, he tried his best to ignore it and took a step in after greeting back the guards. Then, Echo immediately tried to fly away. Sam was holding onto his jesse[footnote]Jesse: a type of leash used for a bird/owl[/footnote] and echo almost yanked Sam to the ground. He got balanced, and said, "Echo, ride" Echo hesitated for a bit, but then flew onto Sam's shoulder. His razor sharp talons digging into his flesh as Echo was gripping onto his shoulder tightly. "Not so tight!" Sam instructed Echo, and he immediately loosened his grip.

Sam explored the city a bit. Mostly to get used to the site of other humans. But also to see what was going on. All through the way, Echo kept snapping his beak when Sam passed a single person. It was a sign that he was nervous, and not to fond of being where Sam had decided to escape from. It like he remembered the story that Sam told him about running away from home to live in the forest all those years ago. "Calm down!" Sam ordered. Again, Echo stopped, but he didn't stop being worrisome, "Look, everything will be alright." Sam then continued on to look at the festivities.

There were a lot of times where Sam said "Wow!" at excitement of seeing something that he hadn't seen for years. People would give him strange looks, then Echo would hiss at them in a "back the hell off" style. Naturally, those people stopped. But one person, decided it was just to weird. He walked right up to Sam, tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Sir, would you mind controlling that owl of yours?"
"Who? Echo? Trust me sir, I have been trying. It's just-" Sam tried to explain as he was cut off by the man.
"Abu-bu-bu, don't give me your excuses. Obviously you aren't being as strict as you should be with him." The man instructed Sam, not even noticing that Sam was starting to get a bit infuriated with him.
"Im not being what? I will have you know I am treating Echo not as a pet, but as a companion. Oh wait, he is my companion. So I suggest you shut up, and leave."
This had angered the man, he crossed his arms, turned around and stormed off. "Now im remembering why I ran away in the first place." Sam said behind the mans back.

Sam had decided to go to a nearby Inn to settle down and forget about what had just happened. Hopefully this would calm Echo down. Then again, a few drinks wouldn't hurt either. It would be a part of that settling down option Sam had thought of. So, he went to the Tavern across the street of the Inn. Of course, seeing the dancers in the Inn made him say "Wow!" Cause he has never seen anything like it at all. He went to an empty table and sat down. ...Wait, how am I supposed to get the attention of the lady that serves drinks? this was one of the downsides of coming into a city. He had barely any social skills. "Uh, lady serving the drinks, could I uh, get a moment of your time? Please?" Sam said, he then thought about what he just said, Dammit that barely sounded like what anyone else was saying!

The tavern girl swerved again as she was summoned, run off her feet and exhausted, but snapped awake at the sight of a beautiful owl perched on the shoulder of the newest customer. It was a magnificent bird, but more remarkably, one she had seen in times before on her night time expeditions over the tavern wall. She did not know how to react as she approached the newest customer to take his order, should she be excited to see a familiar creature, or should she fear being discovered? Will the owl recognise her? She is just one of the thousands of humans he would have encountered in his life she reasoned, he probably would not even recognise her. But if he did, surely his human companion would sense this recognition. She studied the man's face as she approached, and sensed something familiar in his gaze, a familiar solitude. He would not tell. "What can I get you?" she asked.

"Uh, do you by any chance have uh, some water?" Sam asked, he saw the look on her face. He to had though he had seen her before. He couldn't quite remember, but he somehow recognized her before. She seems so...familiar...like I have seen her somewhere before. Was it near here? Sam almost spoke up, but decided against it. He probably already seemed weird just by the way he asked for a drink, if he asked if he had seen this woman somewhere before and he really hadn't, well that would be just a bit embarrassing.

Echo also thought he had seen this woman once. He stared at her, not blinking one. He then snapped his beak, stood up and spread out his wings a bit. Not all the way, people would be smothered by his feathers. But only about a quarter of the way out. Show off...

Zestia looked up at the waitress with a sort of bland expression. Shade didn't much care for what was going on. He just lied there, coiled on her shoulders with his head on one of her shoulders. Just as she was about to answer, the waitress was being called at. The waitress left. Zestia drank her ale and waited for the waitress to come again.

The tavern girl smiled politely and turned to fetch a mug of water. How peculiar, she thought to herself, to come to a tavern to drink water . She glanced back at the strange visitor as she filled the ale mug with water from a keg positioned above a sink usually used to store fresh water for cleaning. What an interesting fellow , she thought to herself, running her eyes over the fine deerskin jacket he wore, a garment she had only seen once before on a visiting huntsman. However, the huntsman was burley and rough, and spoke as though he were the biggest beast in the woods, quite unlike the unusual boy that sat alone quietly with the familiar owl. The tavern girl returned the mug of water to the boy with the owl, then turned to hurry towards the back of the tavern before she was sighted by another customer. She knew she was being silly but was determined to catch a glimpse of Cora just to reassure herself of his wellbeing. She knew that scruffy crow too well, and with such excitement and festivities, could only imagine the trouble he was getting himself into on the other side of the tavern wall.

Zestia watched as the tavern girl went to the back of the tavern. Shade watched after her as well. Zestia finished her ale and kept sitting there. Not many people were interested in her, so she thought it'd be a good idea to try and talk to her.
"Think she doesn't like you?" Zestia asked Shade.
Shade just tickled her cheek with his tongue.
"Yeah, I think so too. Who wouldn't like you?" She chuckled a little.

After getting a room and dropping off his coat and pack, but retrieving the small bag he kept his medical supplies in, Lev walked back down and exited the inn.
He looked around for Tatiana, who had been more than a little grumpy when Lev had told her that they didn't serve any food of drink at the inn today, and sure enough, she was laying sulking in the shade of a nearby stable, almost panting like a dog in an attempt to keep cool.

Lev hit the side of his leg lightly, "Come here, Tatiana. We'll get you some water somewhere else."

The tiger merely looked at him in dismay, clearly not liking the idea of going out into the sun again, but being sufficiently swayed by the prospect of drink. She got to her legs and followed Lev as he entered the tavern and dropped down at a nearby table, completely ignoring the person already seated there.

"Waitress! An ale, and a bowl of water." He said as he looked at Tatiana making her way over to him, pressing several of the patrons up to their tables with her large body before coming to rest behind his chair, looking with the ice cold eyes of a predator at the nearby patrons who she had shoved earlier, and growling softly.

"So this...is Gemmel." muttered Tarm, as he stood in one of the bustling streets, lost in the confusion. He looked down to his side where Staven sat, huddling up next to Tarm's leg. "No need to be so scared" he chuckled, looking back up and squinting at the scenery. He'd only ever seen Gemmel from the outside and he wasn't used to being around this many people.

He began walking slowly down the street, getting the odd look from people that noticed his rugged clothing and odd demeanor. "Come on Sta, let's get you out of the street," he said, smiling down at the wolf, who whined in agreement. Tarm took a step into a tavern, it wasn't exactly to his tastes, but it got him out of the way.

He found a chair in a corner and sat down, setting his pack down on the table, Sta came and sat next to him, eyes darting around the room. Tarm kept his head down, he wasn't hear to attract attention from anyone, but no doubt he'd managed to do that anyway.

Sai lifted her mug in thanks as the waitress walked by. She felt Kia give off a feeling of anoyence. "What? Don't give me that look I know you've been eyeing the fancy statue in the barracks." Besides can you blame her porr girl has to be cooped up in here all day, with drunks. You'd be wary too." Sai said taking a drink of ale. "I'll make sure to leave her a tip in anycase." Kia sent a flash of gray, indicating she couldn't care less. "Yeah yeah I know. I know." She said with a smile.

Badelin rode Dax into town, deciding to take shelter for the night at the local inn. As they were slowly making their way to the inn, Badelin was memorizing the city's layout and where guards were stationed just in case things got suddenly ugly and he needed to make a quick getaway.

Soon, they arrived at the inn and after making sure that Dax had enough food and water, Badelin went to the tavern which was just across the street. He went inside and just as he came through the door, almost everybody glanced at him. All they saw was a gray hood and a shadowed face which only revealed a mouth."Who was this man on whose face you couldn't read any sign of human emotion and what was his business in town? Surely he didn't came for the celebration!" Badelin didn't cared one bit and slowly made his way to an empty table in a corner. He took a seat next to a wall and rested his feet on the table while crossing his hands. He stayed in silence for a couple of seconds but then he looked up at the people who continued to stare at him and revealed his green eyes for a moment. They showed only annoyance and thus, those that were curious looked away to not anger this peculiar stranger.

Badelin then continued to sit in silence only thinking of how foolish his act was. An assassin should have known better then to attract so much attention but then he decided that it was not really his fault. During this time of celebration, people without smiles attracted attention and Badelin wasn't one to cross his honor for the sake of sparing a few odd looks.

Nathan steadied his aim, his eyes glinting as he concentrated on the deer, he sat on a tree in perfect balance, Styru was underneath him, ready to pounce. The leaves in the trees shimmered, the sunlight bursting through them, he had one arrow left.

*Twang*

The arrow was released, it hit the deer in the leg, it tried to get away. Styru charged at it, dragging it down, Nathan ran up towards it. The deer kicked Styru off, Nathan still charging, he pulled out his sword and jumped on it's back, he thrust the sword down to keep steady. He snapped it's neck, it crashed and fell against a tree, he was about to pick it up when something pained him, an image flashed in his mind, a pool of blood. He pulled out the sword and ran back to Styru.

"Where are you, Styru?!" He shouted, he kept running along the the path he thought he had travelled across, a groan was heard. He ran over to the location, Styru lying there. "I need to get you back" Nathan said, he was looking at Stryu, his neck bleeding from being kicked onto a trap. Nathan fixed some cloth around Stryu's neck and slung him over his shoulder, he was heavy, but he could carry him.

Dammit, I need help from someone, anyone...
