One day, Steam had a pretty awesome sale where you got Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics in a bundle for a pretty darn cheap price (I can't quite remember what the price was, but I'm fairly certain it was under $10). And I thought, "hey, why not? I know it's not the same as Fallout 3 (which I really enjoy), but I'm certain it can be fun in its own right!"
Before going in I knew it was in an isometric view (which became extremely annoying when the door to a building was on the "invisible" side, but you couldn't see it because the roof was in the way) and that it was turn-based combat. "Whatever!" said I, "I'm sure it will still be enjoyable!"
And... I tried. I really did try. There were a good deal of annoyances that I tried to just accept, but... in the end, I just couldn't get into EITHER of the original Fallout games. I actually got through to the halfway point of the first game (I THINK it's the halfway point anyways... I got the water chip). But... I just can't do it.
I think the thing that really got to me was the action points thing. I had like... five. And never anymore than that, even when I leveled up. Doing one thing would end my turn, including OPENING UP MY INVENTORY. Whereas the majority of my enemies could attack me twice. When I got a follower guy that definitely helped... and even he had more AP than I did. He could reload and attack in a single turn FFS.
So... I dunno. MAYBE I AM DOING THINGS HORRIBLY WRONG. That wouldn't surprise me. The first time I played Dragon Age: Origins I did things horribly wrong then, too. I was still able to complete the game and it's my #1 game of all time (which is kind of hilarious since at the time the only games I liked to play were First Person Shooters and I'd taken a rather large gamble on a game I knew almost nothing about).
Maybe I could suffer through the gameplay if the story was better, but... argh. It is so. Fucking. BORING. *flip table* I really do not understand how fans of the original Fallout titles can praise THOSE stories, but talk shit about Fallout 3's....
*sigh* So, fellow Escapees... any games that you just couldn't get into, no matter how hard you tried? It can be because of HUGE things (like gameplay) or little things (like... I don't know... one character's voice acting).
(And yes, you may say Dragon Age: Origins
I won't hate you for it, and I've heard some fairly valid criticisms towards it).
My runner up game is Morrowind. Runner up since through virtue of the console I can cheat like fuck through that game. "~tgm" is like my motto for that game... hrr.
