Controversy makes games. Mass Effects pre-order sales went up almost 10 fold after the "leak" of the sex scene. It is one of my favorite games of all time. The controversial leak insured I would get a sequel.

I remember I got hold of a US copy of Thrill Kill for the PS1 (im in the UK, never got released over here) which apparently got banned in quite a few places.
Yes indeedy- I played a US copy of Thrill Kill also in the UK! That was just SILLY! Once something goes so far to be the most crazy extreme thing out there it just becomes ridiculous.

I'm sure we're all aware of this argument:
'I don't agree with what you say- but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.'

And I think it sums the whole topic up nicely.

So did World War 2 and Medieval warfare.
Yeah on both sides
911 killed the suicide bombers and people in the towers, on the ground, and others
It didn't magicly kill people in other cities
plus it happend 7 years ago compared to like 20 and hundreds

I don't know if you're aware, but there are many WW2 vets around... and yet, you still say that WW2 games are 'fair game'? Oh, and what about all the German and Japanese civilians that died during WW2? Many weren't aware of the Holocaust, nor any of the other war crimes perpetrated against the enemy. In fact, these people suffered quite a bit, what with the Allied invasion of Berlin and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively.

You still think that 9-11, an event that, while devastating to those who lost family members, isn't fair game, while games about WW2 are? The same games that seem to continually show that the US, Britain and Russians turned the tide of the Nazi invasion, disrespecting both all other Allied nations, as well as the Axis soldiers, who are never shown sympathetically.

Actually Anoctris is right... I in no way condone what happened on 9/11 and I'm not saying it's a good thing. But still, there have been things that killed more people, Hiroshima for example. The Japanese don't declare RAGE the moment somebody so much as mentions that. Wasn't that terrorism? If I remember correctly it was the American governments intention to keep dropping nukes until the Japanese surrendered.

Actually you are the one who is looking like a fool.

How many civilians have the USA Military killed in the Middle East compared to 9/11? A hell of a lot more I can assure you. Yes, the British Army has done so too, but I despise them for it.

Oh, and I believe the USA is the only Country to have nuked civilians too, so get off your damn pedestal.

Ok in response to the OT (since I haven't read the rest yet) I think you are confusing controversial with poor taste. You may not like it. It make sicken you right to the core of your being. I just fail to see the controversy in a Columbine Shooter Sim. Or something along those lines. Look at the other real controversies like Mass Effect or RE5. The creators didn't set out to offend anyone yet some found it so. Games like the one you mentioned are just made in poor taste to get a rise out of people. Unfortunately the only thing you can do is ignore it and move on.

EDIT

There is no line here. Anyone can create any game they want (providing they have the technical know-how). That is the price of freedom. We have the freedom to not play it, not like it and not support it. Just as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone elses rights like privacy (ie using real names of victims) gotta just let it ride.

I believe the War in Iraq officially ended a few years ago, and yet civilians are still being killed? There is a difference between a civilian being shot in crossfire and having their homes bombed into the ground by artillery.

Hitler was not in Japan by the way. Just a fact you seem to be misguided on.

you don't get the main point here
as shown by the fact that many games get put out by devs about WW2 its not an issue any more.
I have relatives who fought and were injured but I still play COD
It's not blaming either side or glorifying mindless killing. 911 as a game would not be a war sim or whatever it would just be to cause ruckus. It's like JFK reloaded or Columbine rpg. it's not to provide a game for 17 year olds to kill their friends on Xbox live a game like one of the examples I chose is just to laugh and poke fun at tragedy.
