What? They do understand it. That's why they were furious. They may not have understood that it was a joke, but that's got nothing to do with what language they speak. What are you saying they should understand?
That it was a joke?
So what does that have to do with the fact that their native tongue is English? If their native tongue was French, and they learned English later, do you really think that that would change their understanding of humour?

The worst thing is, is that had Portal been say a book or a movie we would never be having this discussion. But because it's a video game, we get this!
Damn. This is actually true, again. I always forget this fact. If the robot would have been the same insane robot in a movie, it would have been perhaps described as funny or like I said insane, but when it is interactive, suddenly everything becomes personal to some people. So sad.

Also, it's not educational it's a puzzle. It's educational in the same way that tetris is educational.
Yeah. Who has ever said that this game is educational (except these smart reporters).

Come to think of it, this is how the world's media is today. Actually, reminds me of this:

I was believing that when someone didn't understand what is the meaning of something you simply say to read it again. And that if the thing is write in your mother language, you have no excuse. Even if you are obnoxiously stupid. [let say that now, before you get offend, no it not a offence direct to you]

Or did this change? When? When the Internet shoot down due to portal 2 release day?

I'm adopted, and not once has the jokes from Portal offended me, at all. I think that kid would have been better off not being adopted by Captain Dipshit here. Why would something like this bother anybody?

Okay, it might sound a bit bad to an adoptive parent, but come on! It's not like the game is saying "YOU'RE ADOPTED! YOU SUCK!". And if they're give their daughter the love a child, any child, deserves, she has no reason to feel bad over being adopted.

I never noticed Portal building itself up as an educational game myself, by the way. Then they make it sound like it was the developers who gave the game an E rating. And if every game got an M rating if it had something that could offend someone, all games would have the M rating. One could say that Viva Piñata teaches our kids that it's okay to hit their friends with a shovel and eat their remains. And then make babies with their siblings.

Sorry, I can't understand what you're saying here. I'll have no further part in this exchange.

God forbid the villian of a game say something offensive.

Maybe the dad should have just been a smart parent tell his daughter the robot was saying that because it's evil.

Wheatley's joke technically doesn't even work. "Lack of parents"? Adopted kids have parents and if anyone should know that it's the parents! The man in the news apparently has some crippling insecurities...

And yet another person taking things a little too seriosuly.

Seriously why do these people seem to take every little joke personally, after all it's a ficitonal character saying it to another ficitional character. Is this guy really so worried about his child that he thinks she can't tell the difference between reality and ficition.

Is a game rated E allowed to show that Santa does not exist?

Really, I'm not sure
