Coolest Alien race in video games

The Shivans from Freespace.

Despite being a massive Tyranid fan since the halcyon days of Rogue Trader, I have to say the Shivans from the Freespace series have always fired my imagination the most. The Tyranids are more a Tabletop game race for me, anyways. If the thread was 'Coolest alien race ever' I think the 'nids would be higher on my personal list.

As for the Shivans I'll let the Ancients say it for me;
"When the Destroyers came for us, we attacked. Never had we been defeated. They were like the others: strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die."

The Shivans not only look bizarre and awesome, they act in a very alien way, too. Some of their actions during the games have no easy explanation. Most of the battle seems to be understanding the Shivans, rather than fighting them, at times. For me, too many games have 'Wrinkly Forehead Alien' syndrome, where alien races always have easily understandable motives and personalities. The Shivans, at least, go against that and that's why I'll always consider them to be cool.

The Protoss (Starcraft), Quarians (Mass Effect), the Combine . . . whatever the name of their species is.

I say the Combine because they are outright cool, the tech, the fascism, the inability to take out ONE gun crazy scientist. The Combine are pretty awesome.

I'm going to go with the Krogans from Mass Effect. Its a shame the fact they have multiple replicas of the same vital organs didn't come into gameplay, but other than that they're a pretty badass race.

I was going to say the Elites in Halo. They certainly are fascinating in my opinion. You would plough through them in the bucket loads but each one would be able to take you out in a one on one situation if you made a mistake.

I'd have to say the Forerunners in Mass Effect win though.

Ok I have decided on the krogen being the most awesome alien race Wrex being foremost in my mind when I say this.

They're my second favorite. 3 guesses as to my favorite.

The only hard part of Mass Effect is fighting Krogan Battlemasters.

Seriously. That one Battlemaster on Therum, after you find Liara, it took me bloody hours to finish on my Insanity playthrough.

Tyrinids. The inspiration for the Zerg, and utterly badass in their own right.

I second that, though some later models seem inspired by the Xenomorphs. Or maybe the designer was a Giger fan.

There were indeed inspired by Aliens.

Hence why the Rippers look like chest bursters and the hive tyrant looks like an Alien Queen.

Hive tyrant the only similarity between them is hat it?s big the Queen don?t have giant blades on it and a tyrant doesn?t have a tail.... (I think come to think of it, it might...) if I?m wrong feel free to correct me.

Similarity wise: Gaunts = Xenomorphs (Alien Morphs...=...Xeno Morphs)

THE ZERG! The zerg would take any other alien race they came across and then mutate the hell out of it untill it was at least 5 times as deadly. If it wern't for the fact that they have to balance the starcraft games. The zerg would never loose. "Oh so you're gonna make a big death-ray tank? No problem i'll just evolve a super tiny Kamikaze soldier to kill it from above." "Oh you got a weapon that can shoot bolts of plazma? Ok ill just evolve a creature that can shoot spikes across 3 football fields"
If these creatures not only are capeable of evolving space farring beings, and they've traveled to thousands of worlds, who says that they cant do whatever the hell they want?
