Videogame I'd say Shivans. Five armed creatures apparently optimized for zero-G environments with a frickin' laser on their heads and enough 6 kilometer "Sathanas" battleships to sacrifice like 60 of them to cause a supernova.

Outside of videogames my vote goes for carbosilicate amorphs [http://www.schlockmercenary.com/]. Simply a blob of nanotech sludge that can eat a man in power armor with one bite, is immune to anything except freezing and vaporizing and, worst of all, is intelligent enough to wield plasma cannons and other assorted heavy artillery. Its favourite foods are chemically polluted cocoa and lawyers.

As much as I love Protoss, Nautolans, Covenant, Necrons, Wookies, E.T. and even Draenei if they count. The Hooloovoo from Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy takes the cake for most awesome alien race ever. What is it? A super intelligent shade of blue. Technically he's not from a game, but he deserves a mention.

Kudos for bringing that up, Douglas was a legend.

For me, it's gotta be the Covenant. Just cos of the mystery. Despite all that's happened people still don't really know what they are (or perhaps I need to dig deeper into Wikipedia).

Though, for me I'm stuck between the Antlions (Half-Life 2), and the Sanghelli.

I'm NOT a big fan of Halo, though I enjoy the books (I agree with Yahtzee about the game.), but the Sanghelli are pretty damned cool.

As for the antlions? C'mon! They were CUTE! Hell, even the first time through the game I AVOIDED killing them, even if it meant sprinting through sections and going out of my way to dodge them, they were just too cool.

A lot of people have mentioned the Elites from Halo but what about those retarded midgity whatchamacallits from the same game. Okay, not exactly "cool" but amusing enough to warrant a mention.

Of course, since we're talking about races in video games and not just races from video games, everybody who's said Predators and Xenomorphs are correct. You really can't beat those.

Agreed. The Hooloovoo is by far the most awesome alien ever, even considering the covenant, the Necrons, the Tyranids, the Krogan and the Turians (all of whom are awesome)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Draenei a civilisation from David Gemmell's Books? Even so, they are pretty sweet...
