In general, if they've done something bad enough that they deserve to go to prison, then helping them would be a bigger weight on my conscience than turning them in.

Yes I could. And all of my friends know this. And they would do the same to me.

I think this is too vague to garner a proper response if it was murder? Sure.
But indecent exposure public disturbance and crap like that then no.

Why is it that most everyone sees only two options? Helping or turning in? Hell, I'll stay away! Call me whatever you want, but I firmly believe that a man's fuckup is his own problem. Even if the person in question is my best friend, no difference. I won't turn no-one in, because I am not the guy to betray friends like that. But as for helping a criminal? No. That there's their own pile o' crap to deal with.

Like most people here, I think it's going to be entirely dependant on the crime the friend committed and the circumstances they found themselves in.

Also depends on the friend in question, if it's one of my better friends I'm less likely to turn them in for the same crime as one of my not so close friends.

nah...unless what they had done affeccted me....

if they murdered some random guy that i didn't know i wouldn't care. And my friends are pretty close knit to eachother so i doubt they would harm anybody i know.

yes, i'm pretty imoral.

If the crime was small e.g. thief than I would let it slide but I will tell him/her my opinions of his/ her action. If the crime is big (rob a bank) especially if he/ she had harm someone in any phyiscal way then I would turn him in.
I would be guilty for doing it (since it's some what betrayer) however if he/ she is really is my friend then he/ she would know me enough for doing that. Also I would expect the same result if I was the one comminted the crime and he/ she may turn me in to the authority.

This highly depends on the situation, if they did a hit n run I would, if i knew they where stealing car radios I would. If they where doing something only damaging to themselves or a victimless crime then no.

This, unless it is serious, they are still my friend and I will just berate them for it. But something serious against another person... sorry.

Not normally, but if someone I knew were hurting people or any 'major' crime I would. No question about it. People work hard for their achievements. There is no scenario in which I would condone theft of any kind. There doesn't come a point where a business is 'big enough' or a person is 'rich enough' that it wouldn't matter. What exactly do people mean when they say 'victimless'? It always matters. But it would have to be major for me to actually get involved. Minor occurrences are more likely to end up with me ending just the friendship. I don't have time for that selfish crap. I have been homeless before, so I don't go for that 'bread to feed your family' shit. It is easy to find free food if you really need it pretty much anywhere.

Things I don't care about include but are not limited to: jaywalking, minor parking violations, smoking weed.

Nailed it. If they mugged, or raped, or otherwise did something harmful to someone directly like that then yeah, I'd feel obligated to report them to the authorities. Steal a bag of candy from the grocery chain? Yeah most likely not reporting them. That's more hassle then it's worth.
Pretty much this. There really isn't anymore for me to add. lol

Define the victimless crime. Attempted murder is technically a vistimless crime in some situations (where the murder never caused harm, but the intent was clear) and I'd sure as shit want someone who attempted to murder another to be far away from me.

Depends on the crime, if they killed someone or held possession of marijuana yes. But if they were just drunk driving no.
WAIT! Murder and a small bag of weed are the same to you?
Yeeaaahh, I said that wrong. What I meant to say was something big or something disrespectful. Murder is big and I would gladly kill anyone who murders people and enjoys it. But someone who has and uses marijuana I just wanna beat the shit out of.
Not only do you not see the irony in killing a murderer (thus making yourself a murder, and as you would see it as "good" you would therefor be open game to another such person wanting to kill you for enjoying murder. Genius) you also want to physically abuse and assault someone for choosing to take a herb you dislike that would harm no one? Wowza. That's a terrifying opinion. Terrifying and disturbingly psychotic.

OT: I'd rat them out to save myself; knowingly aiding in someone's evasion of the law is a crime and lying to police is also a crime.

Well, I guess it depends on what they did. If they sold some drugs then no I wouldn't say anything. If they killed somebody, well that's a horse of a different color. There's loyalty up to a certain point, but if they're going around murdering people I obviously didn't know them as well as I thought I did.

So let me get this straight, you would rather that someone drinks and drives, putting bystanders in harm's way as a result of their actions and intoxication, than use a drug that is arguably better than alcohol. Seriously? Not only that, you are comparing murder with possession of that drug when drinking and driving has no doubt killed more people than marijuana.

OT: I would turn them in for murder or rape after talking to them first and trying to convince them to turn themselves in but something like shoplifting? No way.

Edit:

...Seriously? You want to beat the shit out of someone for using a drug that doesn't affect anyone else, but drinking and driving is OK?

Hell no.

Friendship is about trust.
And it frustrates me so few people here share that.

You don't tell on your friends, you help them work it out so that they can come clean themselves or not.
It's their issue.
