If anyone is interested in being pre-existing friendships/enemies, bear in mind that Katherine is something like Lawful Neutral: she believes in stability and the power of the state, instead of trivial things like morality or personal gain. She would rather be second in command of a powerful, enduring organisation than take over at the cost of weakening the position. On the other hand she doesn't care for "doing the right thing", and she has no problem with assassinations and kidnapping to maintain the power of Acherus and the Council as it's ruling force.
I'd be interested in establishing pre-existing relations, though I'm not sure what he'd think of Katherine.

BTW, Welcome back ThreeWords!! :D
It's nice to be back, and nice to be remembered. Glad to see you're still around, Doc.
As for pre-existing relations, the limiting factor is that we haven't put any politics in our sheets, nor personalities. Though maybe these things are for the best; iunner motives tend to be important in subterfuge...

I think her and Emile certainly have common ground. However, much like Katherine, sitting on the throne himself isn't Emile's primary objective. He'd much rather throw his weight behind an ambitious candidate who's willing to essentially give him anything he wants in exchange for the support he can provide, so I think how they would get on would depend on whether or not they backed the same horse.
How abut distant mutual respect?
I should probably get around to establishing some of these. My character would certainly admire Emile, what with the military background and the impressive career, they might be friends. He would probably look up to, but be a little intimidated by Arcanists character. Especially as Alistair is his de facto boss. However, he'd strive to be on good terms with him as they work together and knows Alistair is key to achieving his goals in the Admiralty.

As for his relationship with Katherine I think Vayon would be very wary of her, mostly because of what she deals in as the power if the Imperial Spy Network cannot be truly expressed on paper. Vayon can read lists of ships under control of the Empire and get an idea of the Navy's power but he cannot get an idea of the size and scope of the agents at Katherine's command. There'd be respect for what she does but a lot of caution because of how subtly powerful she is.

He seems to be active on the site, he's just neglected this thread. I'm pretty sure it's, unfortunately, dead.

If this is still active, I still want in; Gennadiy's not going anywhere, and I'm hoping nobody else will either.

We could merge the roles of Admiral and General to have one lord for the whole military, but the game would be very different without a religious player. Perhaps we ought to open to recruits...
I submitted for Lord Treasurer, dr submitted for Minister of Justice.

I would rather the Priestess and Commander of Armies just be an NPC rather than we just throw a fuck ton of power at one of the commanders. Hell, have the Commander of Armies be in charge of things from the outset and just let terrible things happen to him.

The balance of power is delicate, Lord Admiral and Lord General can't be combined. if we lackthe General or the Priest at go time I will handle them. Hope you like thinly veiled Christianity.

With RandomMan01 as General, and an NPC Priest, I would be most satisfied.

Let us begin at the first opportunity!

STATE OF THE EMPIRE: The Emperor Sigfried III has slipped into a coma. Crown Prince Richter has been slain in battle during the war with the natives of the newly discovered Magelan continent. The major port city of Iskendar has become afflicted with a mysterious plague that results in massive painful boils across the entire body, and is fatal nine times out of ten. The diplomatic party from Sanshas have arrived and wish to present themselves to the Emperor. Prince Ferdinand is six months old and is under the primary care of the old nurse Ingrid Belzer.

The Emperor's Council is in session within their chambers. It's sparsely decorated with bare stone walls and no windows, the floor covered in a gray woolen rug, torched blazing in their sconces, the smoke conducted away through a hole in the ceiling, a fire blazes in the hearth. The seats of the Emperor, the Prince, and the Holy Father sit empty as the councilnsits to deal with the crises of the day.

Katherine glares around the table, fixing each member with her steely gaze as she analyses this strange state of affairs. With the Emperor unconscious, the Prince dead, and Holy Father unaccounted for, the session is quiet; it is especially awkward for the lack of the usual dominance of the royal family, and all present can sense the power vacuum. Katherine considers which of those present are most likely to cause trouble in these uncertain times, and her brain is filled with predictions and counter-plots. She decides to take the initiative, and stands, looking around the table again before addressing the Council.

"My Lords of the Council" she begins, "The situation, as I'm sure you are all aware, is dire. We are beset by war and plague, and death stalks our imperial Family. You have all read the reports on the events of in Iskendar and Magelan, so I will not bother you with the details. I will make my position clear: in the midst of these unexpected tragedies, we must see to the stability of the Empire."

"The war abroad I will leave in your hands, Giovanni" she says to the scarred Commander, "The priority here is to assure the safety of our new Heir, the Prince Ferdinand, and secure a Regent until a member of the royal family is fit to rule. And we must do so with a smile on our faces, for Sanshas has sent their men once again, and they will be sniffing for any hint of our weakness."

"Second, the plague in Iskendar must not be allowed to spread. Refugees fleeing the city will only carry the disease with them; limiting their movement is vital so that the plague cannot spread across the lands. Once the threat is contained my agents will seek out the source, be it in Acherus or abroad."

She falls silent, and again looks around the table.

"Well? What say you, my Lords?"

Lorthdale was hardly paying attention to the proceedings in front of him. Normally Katherine would have his full and undivided attention, but with the current news, almost all of his work had been undone. Reports of looting, vandalism, rape, torture and...murder. All of these had spiked in recent days and to top it off, Siegfried, his idol, was dead. The man who had given him the opportunity of his life, to prove he was above the trash and to serve swift justice, was gone. This was almost too much to bear. Lorthdale stared at the flooring, examining just how bare it was.

"Well? What say you, my Lords?"

At that, Lorthdale snapped out of his trance and spoke up. He realized that if he sat down and did nothing, the entire nation would go to ruin. It was under these exact circumstances that Siegfried would scold him for hesitation. After a few coughs, the purple draped man began.

"I can handle the local situations. People are bound to get unruly, and if I can show people that it's business as usual, I am sure most of the empire will stabilize and we can get to dealing with the emissaries from Sanshas properly."

Does Lorthdale control the police? Do we even HAVE police?

The way I see it, Giovani has the army, Lorthdale runs some sort of police/court system in the cities and Katherine runs a small Secret Police.
The Army are powerful, but rarely deployed against Acherus; maybe there needs to be special legal action to allow martial law. The police are everywhere, and both follow and enforce the laws of the land. The Secret Police interrogate and torture anyone, or make people disappear, but there are only few of them and they cannot control the populace on their own.

Sound about right?

Katherine nodded to the Minster of Justice. "The capitol will need controlling; riots may indeed spring up, and your police will need to be ready. Furthermore, we may need to instigate martial law in the Iskendar situation begins to sour. Can you work with the Lord Commander to prepare the legal groundwork for that? We may need to enact such measure at short notice."

Darren shuffled through a few papers he brought with him to the meeting and did his best to look bored. After serving on the Council for a few years he learned several things about being Lord Treasurer. The first was that no one quite knew what his job actually was. All most people knew about the Lord Treasurer's position was that it involved paying for all the government's expenses and collecting taxes. How, exactly, everything got paid for was something few people actually realized, in the popular imagination Darren sat atop a limitless mountain of wealth, just waiting to be disgorged for the Empire, or else he just pulled gold from the air like a magician. This in mind, he got into the habit of bringing along some minor paperwork about the imperial accounts to some of the meetings to impress on everyone the fact that his job involved more than just being a glorified strongbox.

The second thing he learned was that everyone watched the money to predict what to do. If he looked happy, they thought the treasury was full to bursting, and that money was just lying about waiting to be spent on lavish imperial projects and frivolities. If he looked upset or nervous, the realm was nearly bankrupt and a panic would start. He took a lot of effort on practicing seeming apathetic to whatever new terror or blessing had come to the realm. If he didn't seem bothered by whatever happened, then things were ok, but everyone might want to keep a hand on their spending, just as he liked it.

Darren let his eyes wander from the paper for a moment and drift toward the head of the table, toward the Emperor's place, now empty. He rapped his knuckles briefly against the table. Try as he might to seem unbothered, things were bad. Siegfried was dead, or as good as. He could no longer govern, and with Prince Richter dead in the field and no regent named, the Empire was leaderless save for the Council.

Looking about at his fellow Councilors, Darren tried very hard not to groan. It wasn't that they weren't good at their jobs, for indeed, most all of them were expertly qualified, however, with a power vacuum, they'd turn on each other, and turn quickly. Someone would be needed to keep everything in check. He turned toward Lady Katherine as she began the meeting.

My Lords of the Council The situation, as I'm sure you are all aware, is dire. We are beset by war and plague, and death stalks our imperial Family. You have all read the reports on the events of in Iskendar and Magelan, so I will not bother you with the details. I will make my position clear: in the midst of these unexpected tragedies, we must see to the stability of the Empire.

The war abroad I will leave in your hands, Giovanni, the priority here is to assure the safety of our new Heir, the Prince Ferdinand and secure a Regent until a member of the royal family is fit to rule. And we must do so with a smile on our faces, for Sanshas has sent their men once again, and they will be sniffing for any hint of our weakness.

Second, the plague in Iskendar must not be allowed to spread. Refugees fleeing the city will only carry the disease with them; limiting their movement is vital so that the plague cannot spread across the lands. Once the threat is contained my agents will seek out the source, be it in Acherus or abroad.

Well? What say you, my Lords?"

"I say our first priority should be Iskendar." Darren said, meeting the gazes of his fellow Councillors, "As with many I weep for our dear departed Prince. He would have made a fine emperor. He met a most ignoble end and that will be avenged." He punctuated this statement with a sharp bang of his fist against the table.

Letting the sentiment sink in for a moment, Darren paused before continuing. "However, our enemies are far away, and we need not look far to find more pressing concerns. The plagues at Iskendar are spreading, and must be checked at all costs. If we do not act quickly, we may soon find ourselves contending with a disease that will wrack the Empire, rather than the slums of one, albeit large, city." As well as one of our most important trading harbors. Darren thought.

The tariffs at Iskendar, and the trade commissions on all imperial shipping contracts, made up a huge part of his budget, not to mention his own business dealings through the city. Losing that port would be disastrous for the imperial economy, and his own finances.

"Many troubles have come to us recently, and they must be dealt with, however, we must be careful where we invest ourselves. Our efforts for the moment must be directed toward Iskendar. If we allow our homeland to fall, what use will any other laurel be to us?"

Giovanni glanced at the room around him. The Empire's Spymistress had been the first to speak up, but Giovanni found that he was barely listening. This new war in Magelan was pressing him hard. Throughout his life, Giovanni had fought in many different types of conflicts, against professional armies, bandits, and tribal raiders alike. He prided himself with the thought that he could be ready for any conflict that came up. But this...this was completely different. The army had always fought on their home continent, but now they were on strange soil, fighting enemies who knew the ins and outs of the land. To top things off, he had to deal with this in a council that was poised to collapse.

He was brought back to reality by the sound Lord Treasurer's fist colliding with his desk.

"Many troubles have come to us recently, and they must be dealt with, however, we must be careful where we invest ourselves. Our efforts for the moment must be directed toward Iskendar. If we allow our homeland to fall, what use will any other laurel be to us?"

Giovanni rose, "Agreed, Lord Treasurer," he said loudly, so that his voice could be heard throughout the whole room, "However, the war in Magelan is still a matter of pressing importance to the stability of the kingdom. The crown-prince died in the war, and now the people are going to want vengeance. Not to mention the resources we could gain from Magelan would be a great boon to the royal treasury,"

Giovanni straightened and adjusted his uniform, "I propose we launch a concentrated effort to establish a foothold in Magelan. Once established, we can strengthen the area, and send in colonists to gather resources and ship them back to our empire. My generals can organize the whole affair with minimal effort, they just need the resources to fortify the front," He cast a quick glance towards the Lord Treasurer, before turning to look out over the crowd and assess their reactions, "At the same time, I realize the importance of keeping this plague in Iskendar in check, and propose we deploy soldiers not present on the front to keep the city under quarantine, containing the situation while simultaneously taking pressure off the police force,"

The Lord Chancellor sat still; his eyes wide open staring forward with no target for his gaze, his jaw clenched and his brow furrowed with a small frown on his face. The small bottle he kept in one of his pockets pressed into his mind amidst the news. Since his inception as a member of this Council Gennadiy felt on edge, like a spectral dagger was placed below his neck. Czernovici had felt this since losing his boyhood lands and travelling with his mum as a kid, but here that sensation was at his strongest. He shook the thoughts of paranoia and wrote furiously in his parchment. He had no love for the Emperor; the man sought to control whatever he touched as far as Gennadiy could tell, and was implacable in the ?talks? the two of them had. That said...

"I assume Sanshas has no idea of the Imperial family's current state?" Gennadiy had answered, his head still focused on the parchment. When no answer came, he sighed. "We'll need a list of the Emperor's nurses and make sure they keep their mouths shut, one way or another. It would not hurt either to distract the ambassadors with some grand event, a fete or tournament perhaps. If a holy day was approaching then we have the ideal excuse."

In the parchment he wrote down as many Alumni he could off the top of his head; scholars who were well-versed in medicine and those who are in or near Iskendar. While this plague was contained, the Lord Chancellor was not quite satisfied.

"It would also do some good to send someone to look into the plague itself, where it came from or whether it can be prevented or cured. Or at least redirected outside Acherus."
