powerglove's cover of 'gotta catch 'em all'! it's at least 10 times cooler than the original!
I'd have put that up if I could've found the instrumental version.

I don't like Tony Kakko, if I'm gonna be totally honest.
not that i listen to him dude, but i've heard the instrumental as well, and he makes it more epic. and nostalgic. it's way better when someone's singing it. now, the power ranger theme on the other hand...

I think I'll go with one of the GNR covers.

It's a skewed perception, though. I heard the GnR first.

I don't mind him, but his singing in this was just too bad, didn't feel strong enough for what he was doing.

Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Fall Out Boy - Beat It
New Found Glory - Kiss Me
Left in the ones that I've heard both versions of, and I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree

There are a few songs where the cover is done in a style that is so different that I can't decide which one I prefer. Notably:

When Doves Cry - original by Prince, cover by Quindon Tarver

Also, Heartbeats - original by The Knife, covered by Jose Gonzalez

Irony's Acolyte

Well I would have posted Johnny Cash's hurt if the OP didn't list it as his first cover. So I guess the two covers that I really like more than the original is Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and Rammstein's "Stripped".

Holy Diver by Killswitch Engaged

Which I prefer, slightly, to

But only slightly, both are awesome.

Take your pick of Leonard Cohen's discography. He was a great writer, don't get me wrong, but I've never heard a song of his that didn't have a better cover done by someone else.

Best cover of one of his songs is probably the Concrete Blonde version of "Everybody Knows"

Mostly just Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss.

Though I do like AiC's Would covered by Opeth as a metal song. I wouldnt say its better, but that band probably did the best job at not just covering, but transferring genres.

i don't have enough time to list all my favourites but I'd like to rock the boat a little and say that All Along the Watchtower was done far better by Dylan. Hendrix's version might be more technically impressive, and the guitar solo is rad, but I think it's almost completely without the creepy atmosphere of the original and that consequently the lyrics are quite clashing with the music.

Hendrix doing "Day Tripper" by The Beatles. As much as I like the original, I think Jimi put a little more gusto into the song.

Other mentions:

Vanilla Fudge covering Lee Hazelwood's "Some Velvet Morning".

Led Zeppelin with Jake Holmes' "Dazed And Confused".

Thin Lizzy with "Whiskey In The Jar".

Pretty much anything by Steel Panther. Also Rise against's covers of Nervous Breakdown and Anyway you want it are pretty good.
