Some fans of really old music might hate me for that, but for me if the covered track was written before 1960 then the cover becomes the original.
That's just factually untrue.
Yea it is, but what I meant to say is that I don't really care if a song by Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple was written by some 1930s blues artist. The original is likely worse, less interesting and barely audible compared to the cover.
That's ridiculous. Just because a song is old, and is from a genre you don't like, that doesn't mean it's bad. Refusing to acknowledge our previous influences and the influences of our influences is a path down mediocrity.
If you don't like a genre how could you recognize it as good?
I don't like hiphop generally ergo, I have no idea what is a good hiphop song and what is a bad one.
Music is subjective. So saying that one kind of music is good and one is bad is baseless. It's entirely based on taste. There is no good music or bad music. Just music you like and don't like.

It's rare that I prefer covers, but there are some cases.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow's cover of As I Die by Paradise Lost (although I do still like the original):

And everyone's gotta love Children of Bodom's cover of Oops I Did it Again:

Five Finger Death Punch - Bad Company (by Bad Company)
Disturbed - Shout2000 (by Tears for Fears)
Disturbed - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (by U2)

and naturally Johnny Cash's Hurt

I like The Lemonheads version of Mike Nesmith's "Different Drum" a bit better than the original and possibly like The Delgados version of "Mr Blue Sky" originally done by ELO better too.

That's recorded covers, naturally, but live covers are totally different and the cover the Smiths used to do of James' "What's the World?" was amazing too.

God, don't I look like an ageing Indie kid from those choices! Only wanted to avoid choosing some that had already been brought up a lot!

So lemme keep up with the conversation thus far... one guy said "i don't care about older songs" you ask him to elaborate and he gives his opinion. Then you tell him that's not the right way to think. I say if you don't like a genre how can you expect someone to make a personal judgment call on it.
Then you tell me 'well it's all opinion'

Yeah, dude sounds to me like you just want to disagree with people.

I didn't ask anyone for their opinion on anything.

IDK. I',m not a massive fan of some genres of music and while I totally agree that taste is a bug factor and you can't just write off whole ages and genres of music like that i also think you CAN educate yourself enough about music in general to have a clue what's a good quality example of it's genre even IF it might not be a genre you love yourself.

I mean it's possible to see the quality in a song you might not be passionate about yourself just as it's easy for us to see what's a good video game even when it might not be one we wan to play through ourselves. I can see the quality, for example, in Portal but don't love the game as the rest of the world seems to. I couldn't say it was crap though-because it clearly isn't and the quality is evident even if it doesn't do much for me overall. Same with music as it's possible for a great sing to overcome the everyday battle lines of genre and break out into being a classic in and of itself.

These two cover by sepultura absolutely rock.

Motorhead's Orgasmatron

New Model Army's The Hunt

Then you have Metallica, which I think that apart from having created some of the best songs ever, is the best cover band in the world. The entire album Garage.inc can prove that, the Bridge School benefit album is great too.

My two cents on the subject, you decide which is better,

So

Joy divisions' version

or Trent Reznor's version

Tori Amos: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Charlotte Martin: "Obstacle 1"
Failure: "Enjoy the Silence"

And about a zillion more.

Paul Anka's version of Wonderwall. I just prefer swing.

Seconded.

Also, I think this a capella version of 'Fuck You' by 'The Awaken A Capella Group' blows the original away.
