Shit, this is a bad time to have a PS3. How much you want to bet Microsoft is absolutely ecstatic about this?

Also, my captcha is telling me to find something called a Doriketa. One can only wonder.
I doubt that, this raises questions about their security too. I have a 360 and not a PS3 and even I'm still planning on using Xbox live time cards from now on. Thankfully the nearest store has tons of them.

No, I don't... And I'd much rather have it be Microsoft as I just spend 8 years restarting my pc to get that fucking updater to not break. But it's good as it'll show these big companies that they're not invulnerable. I'd love it even more if it was a disgruntled costumer
With Sony's track record, half the planet falls under the "disgruntled customer" set...

While I don't think it will even cost them that much, do they even have half that kicking around?

while i would love to think Sony would pay the Indy devs and pay the bills for re printing of credit cards and bills for the breach we gotta be real here we are talking about 24.5 bill here there is no way in hell Sony is gonna pay that at best Sony will pay some gov rep a handsome amount and they will drop it all after all money do talk

Anyone else read "Ponemon Institute" as "Pokémon Institute"? Or is this topic too serious for that?

If that is the case the cost wont be that high. Sony claims there are 77 million users but accounts are free and I for one have 4 accounts (so i can access different countries PSN Stores). Also I highly doubt 77 million people added their credit details to their systems.

Its unlikely everyone buys content from PSN and I doubt that everyone that does buy content uses credit cards. There are pre-pay cards as well dont forget.

Anyway dispite that im sure the overall cost will still be pretty high. I hope Sony doesnt suffer too badly for this as i'd really hate to see them go under.

A world without Playstation is a world Id rather not see.

Xbox Live it's plausible but I'm very confident with Steam's security.
After all, it's not like anyone could ever make off with the source code for Half-Life 2 or something.

This isn't the bankruptcy that the article makes it sound like. It's not just clean up costs. It's total costs. Sony can and will easily weather $24 billion IN TOTAL COSTS. TOTAL COSTS. TOTAL COSTS. TOTAL COSTS. TOTAL COSTS.
Actually, no, they can't. Using the figures from their FY10 statements (which was the year they were making money as opposed to losing money or breaking even), Sony's adjusted operating income (which includes affiliate net income and equity) was a little under 4 billion in USD. This was for ALL of Sony's business and not just the video game division.

So, for Sony to absorb this loss, they would have to be able to post the same adjusted income (which, with the loss in consumer confidence, is an improbable statement) for the next 6 years just to break even after $24.5 billion added to their total costs. When they first released the PS3, they had $9 billion in liquid assets but they were burning through that up until 2009 when their losses were down to a few hundred million. So, presuming that they devoted 2010 income to replenishing their savings, they would optimisticly have 6 billion saved. Even with that, that would still be 4 and a half years of breaking even with income remaining at 2010 levels.

And this presumes that the economy doesn't weaken, consumer demand remains high, there are no class-action lawsuits, and people are still interested in the PS3 years down the road. Even if they broke the 24.5 billion up into a ten year payment plan that didn't charge any interest, this would still be an near-impossible burden to shoulder.

Now, given that the Escapist tends toward a lot of sensationalist "The Sky is Falling" stories, I don't think that the penalties will be this high. But, if they are, Sony is pretty much "dead man walking". The only variable at that point will be to see how badly the rest of the gaming market crashes if Sony does go down in flames. The people cheering this might find out firsthand what it was like in the 1983 gaming crash.....which would actually be kind of hilarious.

I did

OT: I feel sorry for any PS3 owner at this point. They did nothing to deserve this.

Honestly, while I'd love few things more than seeing Sony go down, that's not going to happen due to fines.
I'm guessing a slap on the wrist from the US(corporate bitches that they are), a small fine from the EU(socialists, but still easy enough to bribe). China doesn't give a rats ass and neither does anyone else.

Well, they DID buy a PS3...
That, in and of itself does not prove mental incapacity, but it does go a long way towards that...
To be honest, I was going to buy a PS3 to go with my Xbox when I went away to school so I could play games I otherwise could not.

Also, the end of Sony would mean the end of Kevin Butler, and I don't think any of us want that

This is why I like Nintendo's online. So few people on it no one is really going to hack it.

This has been everywhere! Radio news.....its too huge no hacker/thief will use the credit card information at this point. Thats suicide. but shit will go down.
And if the loss of personal data is in fact confirmed i think consumers may still be able to pull off some legal charges and get some $$$!
You'd think they wouldn't, but there are ways for the hackers to use that money and to not get caught.
Also, identity theft is one of the hardest things to catch, catching the hackers will be difficult.

OT: I doubt it'll cost 24 billion, that's a bit of an outrageous number. I'd say at most they're probably looking at a few hundred million. They'll have to repay their customers, offer some sort of complimentary service for the patience of their customers and they'll also have to pay fines for breaking privacy acts.
