OK, I gotta vent. Thursday, four different groups of kids were robbed, at gun point, while waiting for their school bus, with one kid getting pistol whipped. The thieves made off with a few bucks, MP3 players, and a few other minor things. Then, friday, an elderly couple two blocks down the road were beaten and robbed in their own home. Those guys made off with a purse, nothing else. A donation box for the poor was stolen from downtown. Some poor guy was pistol whipped while sitting in his car waiting for his friends last night. This shit is happening every day in my town, and it's only going to get worse as the economy gets worse. The people around here are fed up, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before vigilante justice starts popping up. How's crime going in your neck of the woods?

Not that bad but I live in a rich white suburb where are police are over budgeted. However in Chicago, the urban part of my suburb, the crime rate is the norm, that said Chicago doesn't have the safest streets but the crime rate hasn't changed that much.
I live in Halifax, the second largest city in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada. And we have our own warring drug families. I'm not sure why I feel like this is good news but somehow, I get a sense of glee whenever they come up. I mean, a little city in the corner of the country have a DRUG WAR. That's awesome, in a twisted sort of way.
No civilian casualties by the way. It's mostly a bunch of guys from one family shooting at one guy from the other...and missing. A lot.

crime has actually leveled off in recent years. What HAS gone up is people actually reporting it and local/nations news outlets finding individual cases noteworthy.

The worst thing that I've heard of in my neighborhood was when my brother got held up in front of a library by some amateur gang a knife-point for his 5 dollar watch.

Ahem: Most Strong arm style robberies are not well planned out they choose people that look like an easy target more than a lucrative one. The object is often to get the most reward with the most minimal risk/effort (Most criminals, especially thug style, are really fucking lazy). The motivation is often drug related or as mentioned the risk/reward factor.
Tip:
Carry two wallets, one with about $5-10 in it and expired credit cards and driver's license if such a thing is allowed in your state/country, also fill it with a small amount of clutter. Hand the dummy wallet when being mugged.
