Something that's been concerning me lately is that i've formed a crush on an anime character. I suppose everyone has crushes on fictional characters from time to time, but it still feels odd. I've only got into anime fairly recently, and i fear this might be early signs of an Otaku developement =0. But seriously, i am quite worried. Read this post from Yahoo Answers [link]http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am_.pUqzQ.YegTc0S4ZA3BMJ5wt.;_ylv=3?qid=20080310135650AAs3mrB[/link] if you don't mind (it's not me btw). Now, i'm not sure whether it's real or a joke, but if it is real that is a serious worry. The reason why it worries me so much is 1) The character doesn't exist 2) Even if the character was somehow real (which she isn't) then i doubt she'd want anything to do with me 3) It's probably a bad sign of my inability to talk to real women 4) She doesn't exist! So i just wanted to know, am i sane? Has this ever happened to anybody else.

As long as it isn't developing into a fetish or a very abnormal thing, then I suppose it's fine to feel emotional towards an anime character.

... Well, I can say I probably have a crush on Hanners from QC, what with her being adorable and everything.
I refuse to acknowledge it properly, though.
And that is the path everyone should take.
She is not real, tell yourself you just think she's a cool character

Waifu's are perfectly natural... BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Just stop it. I haven't watched that series but is it perchance a moeblob designed to get endearment from the spine rather than the brain? Either way just bleh, sometimes I think this kinda thing might happen to me. I shut out Toradora and probably won't watch it again for similar reasons, though not a serious as you make out.

Who is it?
Well, it's a bit embarassing, so please don't laugh... too much :(. Do you know the anime Azumanga Daioh? Well, that Osaka character. She was just a unique character and didn't fall into the typical tall, busty anime chick thing. But yeah, still not good.

That has to be one of the most disturbing pictures I have seen in a long time.

As long as you don't put regular people off as a result then it's completely fine
Look at Hentai and Twilight

Just as long as you don't one day awkwardly approach a DVD with her on the cover and say something like:
"...so you wanna come back to my place or something, I mean if you are busy by all means you don't have to just curious."
That would be crossing the line.

I myself have had mild crushes on non existant women in the past and anime with it's depiction of the impossible to obtain perfect woman is an obvious example of such a medium. Honestly it's not healthy it's part of human nature.

Well to answer nothing harmful comes from it as long as you realize that the character isn't real and all that it really is would be a bout of lust based of physical attraction or other things. So just a little srush on some character is no deal heck it is quite similar to the unnatainable crushes we give to many a hollywood stars. People we could never possibly touch but yet we have feelings for. So don't feel bad, just make sure it doesn't devolop into anything serious like an obbsession which which could cause major harm to your mind and life. Though I would also like to know who these feelings are directed to.

I suppose it's a good thing that your intrested in the character, the creator of that anime/manga did a good job of making the characters or one character intresting.

Also, with the growing complexity and depth given to characters one can't help but grow towards them sometimes.

I'm afraid you have a problem. Not a serious problem, but a problem nonetheless.
There's nothing weird about finding cartoon characters attractive, especially anime characters specifically designed to be perfect (or near enough).
But you actually describe it as a crush, which is a little weird. Thinking back on it, it has happened to me before, albeit briefly. I think it likely stems from a need for affection, or the need to show affection.

I prescribe the love of a good woman. Unfortunately its still in an experimental phase and is hard to get hold of.

I'm actually quite the anime fan myself, but I've never experienced this kind of infatuation with a character. I'm much more compelled by story development and the moral/philosophical questions brought up in many of them.

You obviously seem to realize that "dipping it in watercolors" isn't a fulfilling prospect at all. It seems to me this is something that can be completely overcome with a good dose of reality.

I wouldn't really call it embarrassing as you said initially people do become infatuated with fictional characters. If you are age 12-18 it may actually be a little more normal than you realize. As this is the age group where one develops a concept of romantic love. Which usually has little basis in reality and also typically focuses on fictional characters as one tries to sort out "the ideal mate"

Eventually adulthood will take over and this will be replaced by a more realistic and functional understanding of love. It's a process most everyone goes through to some degree whether they want to admit it or not.

I would just recommend in the name of keeping it healthy to intellectually realize that it isn't real and it never will be.

Which it actually seems you do to some degree.

I suppose i didn't know what else to call it, but i suppose nevertheless calling it a crush it still a concern :(.

Thanks, i'm trying me best. Though i am 19, so i thought i'd be beyond this sort of thing. I mean it hasn't happened in a long time.
