I feel attached to Deidara, which is weird considering he's a guy and I find homosexuality to be disgusting.
Disgusting to look at or disgusting as a whole?

OT: I used to have "teen-crushes" on plenty of fake characters when I was alot younger, they lasted maybe a week and werent serious. if you get as bad-shit insane as the OP's yahoo thing you are batshit insane but just being attracted to well illustrated allmost perfect drawn girls isnt that wierd. If you can just seperate real from not real.

I think that it is fine to have a crush on fictional characters, be it anime or otherwise. I have had an obsession with Spock for a very long time now.

But, you can meet real physical people who you can kiss, touch e.t.c. Get them to dress up like your fictional crush and then the fun REALLY starts.

In extreme cases, there's actually a named disorder for this. For the most part, it just means that the show in question was well written enough for you to form the same kind of emotional attachment to you would a real person.

Let me crack out the huge "Advanced Psychology" part of my brain here (smarmy tone):

Seeing attractive features on a (real) female body is a stimulus. It isn't difficult to replicate the reactions you get from experiencing these stimuli with stimuli that are similar, but fake, ie attractive Anime characters. That's why there are so many people in situations like you, and trust me, there are. Actually, the brain is very easy to trick, especially with visual stimuli. There may be aspects of the character's personality that attract you. There are tons of people who have crushes on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for instance. I don't know the term for it, so I call it "Idol Infatuation". Between those two, I'd say your situation is pretty understandable.

EDIT: To the above, it doesn't have to be well-written. It is an Anime, after all.

There is nothing wrong with that, provided of course, that you keep it in prospective and remember that this character is not real and nothing ever come of it and thus don't allow yourself to become too attached. I myself have had crushes on anime characters, but it didn't particularly mean anything. If I were you, I'd only be worried if it went beyond a simple crush and became a all out obsession.

Think of it this way: If you snap and start f*cking body pillows, at least you'll be happy.

As for those who say "Get out of your mother's basement and go meet real girls." (not necessarily in this conversation), it may not be that simple (not necessarily directed towards the OP, he could be independently wealthy and very charismatic for all we know.) Some people are social rejects due to physical or mental problems, or social standings, resulting in developed psuedo-relationships with fictional beings. This isn't "wrong" or "freaky", but more positive than one may understand. If it keeps the person from killing themself, power to 'em.

Oh yeah, just a little off-topic, is it just me or does "pyrophilia" sound like it would hurt?

That's what I was gonna write word for word.

I believe Kousaka from Genshiken explained it best when he said that 2D crushes and 3D crushes are two completely separate things. 2D doesn't affect 3D and so on. As long as it doesn't develop into an obsession and you still remember that real girls offer far more filling relationships then you'll be fine.

I'll add on and also pull a quote from Madarame from the same manga. "Humans are capable of finding a familiar image in even the most abstract drawing. This is a basic function of the human mind. Just take a look at the simple cave paintings from ancient times. In those primitive drawings ancient people saw images of wild game running across the plains. In other words, anyone who says you can't be attracted to anime obviously has a defective brain! Either that or they're just trying to sound cool. I mean, even in the Edo period they had erotic shunga prints."

But yeah that pretty much sums it up. My words on top, Madarame's below.

From the sound of your question, that's like saying, "I like guns. Could I be a serial killer?!" Not logical; just worrying.
We all had that fantasy crush. I had a crush on Chun Li. The important thing is; as long as you recognize that she will never ever return your affections because she's not real, its fine. You'll forget about the anime chick when a real girl comes long for you. So in the meantime, have fun in the fantasy.

You're fine so long as you don't go off your rocker and start buying everything with said character's face on it. Like the people who think that chick from that shitty Gurren Laggan(or however the fuck you spell that pile of dirt) is the single most beautiful person ever, and buy every toy, picture, statue, whatever of her and have their rooms decked out in that shit. At that point you have two options:

1. Seeks immediate psychiatric help.

2. Come with me behind the head so I can Old Yeller your crazy ass.

The choice is yours, OP.

It's a totally normal thing.

If it got in the way of a real relationship, or developed into what you believe is a real relationship, then it's going a little too far.

And iunno about crushes, but I did always think Flonne from Disgaea was cute.

....Nin nin nin nin!

Oh, Sailor Mercury... one day you will be mine uh, and Harley Quinn too...wait what?

Oh and on topic: Bah you can have crushes on people you don't know whenever you want. Yeah a anime woman is not even a actress (although her voice is) but come on. You can love so much, why not having an innocent fantasy about an animated character?

But don't go completely nuts about that... should be reserved for real woman to make you an idiot *g*

Something that's been concerning me lately is that i've formed a crush on an anime character. I suppose everyone has crushes on fictional characters from time to time, but it still feels odd. I've only got into anime fairly recently, and i fear this might be early signs of an Otaku developement =0. But seriously, i am quite worried. Read this post from Yahoo Answers [link]http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am_.pUqzQ.YegTc0S4ZA3BMJ5wt.;_ylv=3?qid=20080310135650AAs3mrB[/link] if you don't mind (it's not me btw). Now, i'm not sure whether it's real or a joke, but if it is real that is a serious worry. The reason why it worries me so much is 1) The character doesn't exist 2) Even if the character was somehow real (which she isn't) then i doubt she'd want anything to do with me 3) It's probably a bad sign of my inability to talk to real women 4) She doesn't exist! So i just wanted to know, am i sane? Has this ever happened to anybody else.

No lie bro, read this [http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/26/magazine/26FOB-2DLove-t.html?_r=2]

If you're really worried about yourself and there is something to be truly worried about, seeing the extreme in another's actions will help shake you. If you see this and laugh, well then you just have a fondness for a character. Maybe the fondness is more than what a normal person's would be but it's not hurting you.

EDIT: I didn't realize that was a spoiler box you had there and had the same sad men pictured. Since you obviously think those guys have a problem, I think you have the power to keep a little and healthy fantasy/imagination under control.

In general, having a crush on a fictional character, not just anime but pretty much any fictional character, is fine, as long as it stays as a fantasy and nothing more. Obviously, getting obsessed over something is quite different and a sign of a troubled, to say the least, mind. However, what you're feeling is perfectly normal and pretty much any guy, or girl for that matter, will probably have had a crush on some character from fiction at some point in their lives. I'll admit personally to having a slight crush on Rikku of FFX/X-2 (yes, I've heard the 'jailbait' comments enough, thank you) and on Lucy in Elfen Lied (not Nyu, surprisingly, but Lucy, the sadistic mental side. Maybe that says something about me that I prefer a crazy psycho ***** to a normal personality. Huh. Oh well.). I don't have posters of these two lining my bedroom walls and I don't drop them into conversation all the time, or whatever. I simply have a slight attraction to them both in the same way that someone else may have an attraction to the character of Mikaela Banes after seeing the Transformers movie (and yes, my mention of Megan Fox's character was deliberate there, because it's exactly the same thing having a crush on her character as it is having a crush on the aforementioned examples). There's nothing wrong as long as it doesn't move on into the 'crazy' phase, as demonstrated by the OP's picture.

EDIT: By the way, I've worried myself slightly that I may in fact be slightly disturbed anyway, given that one of my anime crushes happens to be portrayed as a psycho sadistic murdering ***** who rips people's limbs off for her own twisted amusement. Hence to try and make myself feel a bit better, does anyone else have that same crush, i.e. Lucy from Elfen Lied?

My philosophy is simply "things could be worse." Just remember this is reality and it shouldn't be too difficult to ride it out.

I'll admit to having a crush on quite a few female characters, particularly Aki from 5D's (don't judge me, please) and Edy from Valkyria Chronicles, among others (I won't say for fear of ostracization, 'cause if I went through everything I've ever seen, the accumlated crushes would be too innumerable to count.)

...good gods, I think I have made it that far.
