Been playing on and off for many years now. We're trying to get a game going in the next couple weeks, though. Just sorting out the kinks in our online interface so we can all play from afar.

Just finished my character sheet for my 1st level human cleric this evening, in fact. Gotta put the finishing touches on the write-up for his backstory and I'm set.

is there a decent thing online that'll help me with character build? I wouldn't mind getting a couple of characters set up, so if I find people, I can jump right in straight away.
IF you plan on playing 4th Edition, which is really fun and great for beginners, you can go on the official Wizards of the Coast site and download a character builder. Well, a dmeo fo the builder, but it'll make you just about any lvl 1 character you could want. Don't let the people who hate 4e discourage you, it really is a fun game!

I'm new to it; poured over the books and I'm now looking for a 4E game over RPTools.
Dude, if you're using MapTools and find a game, please send me a PM. I love 4e, myself, and can't find a game!!!

Right now I playing Star Wars rpg as a Gen-Dai, because we like to mix it up sometimes, but when we play D&D, i'm a half elf warlock alcoholic amnesiac (or as I like to say "an amnesiac who drinks to forget what he can't remember") and I play chaotic neutral, but I would be chaotic evil, but the paladin in our party would have to "smite" me (not that i couldn't take him, I just don't really feel like it)

Technically, I do play D&D and have been since 1996, starting with AD&D. I've played any sort of RPG imaginable, from Scooby-Doo themed Call of Cthulu to Top Secret. I don't play in any game now, but I am in the process of co-DMing an adventure. My last great character was a Raptoran Death cleric, he had a huge enchanted spear and an enchanted polar bear cape, and you know, he flew.

I'm trying to get into it. I've bought the 3.5 player handbooks, monster guides and dungeon master guide. I even got the D&D for Dummies book. Though I'm having difficulty finding some one to have a game with.
Is the D&D for Dummies a good book as i would like to stat playing myself.
It's been okay for me so far. Pretty much just goes through step by step explaining everything for you. The book assumes you know absolutely nothing about D&D or tabletop gaming and teaches you from there. Then it gets in the more advanced stuff as you advance through the chapters. You do need a players handbook and such though.

I play Dark Heresy but would love to play a game of DnD myself. Just not 4th Ed.

My girlfriend wanted to play, so I dug out my 3.5 books and scoped out a couple games in the area, but between grad school and everything else, we didn't have the time to commit to it... :(

I played once, but couldn't get into it. The games are way too short.

20 sided die are overkill. I know there are lots of squares, but if you're lucky it's possible to get to the end in only a few rolls.
Nothing about this makes any sense to me as a lifelong tabletop gamer.

I love Pen and Paper Rpgs. bit i never tried DnD. I guess because i was introduced to the genre with The Dark Eye, which is still the most popular german fantasy game, i got myself the DnD books, but i don't really like the world.
I am too much used to TdE's fantastic realism.

Interesting thing about the Dark Eye - it's the most popular German RPG that's published in German, but based on anecdotal evidence from a number of German players, English language RPGs are far more popular there than German language ones.

D&D doesn't have any set world, there are a number of settings and there's quite a bit of difference between them.

of my group of friends i'm the one who ends up DMing the most, I have tried 4.0 out but found it rather limiting as far as what players can do. I definitely prefer 3.5.

Given the next chance i get i'm probably going Gith monk or catfolk scout

Just read the rules from the perspective of an English student rather than a Science student. Then it becomes much less limiting. Also RAW, there are far fewer limitations outside of combat in 4e than 3.5

I'm currently DMing a 3.5 Iron Kingdoms game, and I'm getting ready to run a 4.0 generic fantasy game. I'm not allowed to play :(
