I?m on my third character now. However, I can?t bring myself to progress past the Upper Undead Burg. I get to the white fog in the tower at the end, and just can?t build up the courage to continue. I?ve been grinding the same few mobs forever.

My problem is that I?m afraid of losing all that I?ve obtained. I hate dying in games, and that makes this game ridiculously difficult for me. It took me so long the first time just to get to the tower as it was.

I also run into the problem of needing to discover everything in an area before moving on. That includes killing every enemy. Including the optional sub-bosses (black knight, dude with dragon-tooth hammer)

I love this game and the concept behind it, but can?t seem to bring myself to play any further.

So, I ask you all, do you have any tips for me on how to conquer this and continue?

Um... just spend your souls on leveling up? Then you cannot lose anything... since souls are the only thing you drop. Plus, you'll probably find a new bonfire nearby so if you die after that you should be able to pick up your souls.

I also like to clean up an area before moving on, so I just do that and use the souls I have to upgrade gear or level up. Then you don't have to fear losing everything. You can always grind more if you need to. I love this game even more than I thought I would.

I guess I might still be in the mindset of pre-patch. Since I now have like, seven humanity on my person, I'm extremely afraid of losing those. I've gotten this character (arguably my favorite thus far) up to level 19 now. I also don't really like over-leveling areas. I'm extremely picky <.<

But, what do you really do with your Humanity? The only useful thing it does is increase the loot you find.

I'm at, I'm not sure SL50 or something, and I've rarely had more than a couple Humanity lol.

Hmmm. You bring up a good point there. That definitely gives me some relief. I don't do anything with it. It just sits there as a pretty number. And, considering I have seven now, and it didn't take me that long to get that many... Yeah, I guess I'll just continue on! Hopefully this doesn't come up again! Thank you!

If you are afraid to continue . You are doing it right. Thats the point , to instill fear in the player . It's up to you to build up the courage or the game wins.

That's what I love about the game. It's incredible in that aspect. I'm working at it more now, about ready to take on the Taurus demon now. But still nervous as all hell.

Nike is telling you what you have to do! "just do it!".

It's a game, so what if you die and lose all your shit? Just pick yourself up and carry on.

I remember when I was a lot younger and I was playing the first ever MGS game, I was stuck in the very first area (literally from the first second of gameplay) 'cos I didn't want to be seen by the guards ... in the end I just crawled out and did what I had to and so should you!

Managed the Taurus Demon easily. Now I can go upstairs to what looks like a single Black Knight and nothing else, or into a room with a giant boar and tons of fire. I can't decide which is more threatening. But! I've made strides, which is more than I can say for a month or two! Getting there, definitely.

Good luck! Just remember to always be able to roll effectively, wearing armour that burdens you is no good!

Why not use all that Humanity to kindle the fire at Firelink Shrine so you can get like 30 flasks or whatever.

Well your fear is irrational because souls are relatively worthless, especially at that point in the game.

You can easily earn a few thousand souls per minute, and you can beat the game almost as easily at level 1 as at level 35. You literally have nothing of value to loose, rush to the boss fight him and if you should die try again.

I had a friend who was kind of like you, he played slowly and cautiously. I rushed everywhere recklessly like an idiot. I beat the game in a few days, he quit during the tomb of primeval kings.

Honestly, don't worry about dying or grinding. Dying is inevitable. You are going to die in this game and there is not much you can do about that. If you get to a point where it gets ridiculous, don't feel bad looking up a guide or asking for help. Some things border on near ridiculous (like Archer Bro's (tm) in Anor Londo).

You really shouldn't grind for stats and what not. Equipment is much more important than stats unless you want to start PvPing (and if you do want to PvP, you probably will make a new character). Bosses drop a shit load of souls and they can all be defeated by a naked, SL1 character.

Grinding should be practice for combat, not for souls. Learn to fight black knights, because there are a shit load of them later in the game. Learn to run through mobs rather than fighting them, because you will be doing that alot later.

In terms of importance: Skill >>>>>> Items > Stats

Because OP does not have Rite of Kindling, and you can only kindle up to 20 flasks with the Rite of Kindling.

There are very few places in the game where I would recommend kindling anyway. If your having trouble with that section, go ahead and kindle the bonfire. Humanity drops like hotcakes later on in the game anyway.

I've always been the cautious type in every game I play. Even games like Call of Duty, I am a waiter, trying to flesh out every option I have before making an attempt at continuing.

I've been going strong for a few hours now though! Just ended up taking a break once my world got invaded and I got slaughtered by some high leveled griefer named "L0RD K1LL" (creative, no?).

Seriously as cliche as it is experiencing the failure is part of the reward of Dark Souls. This is a game for true gamers. To hell with this modern garbage piles that restart us right at the point we died, that hand us constant quest rewards when all we've done is added bonus time to our accounts. This is a REAL game, one that (should you survive) will make you feel like you actually accomplished something, because goddammit that is what you did.
That is exactly why I wanted to play this game. I love it, I just haven't adapted to the playstyle yet. Getting there though! I do love the sense of accomplishment too.

I'm learning, slowly. I think my little bout of PvP before I quit just now really helped me out though. Items are really scarce for me, I've upgraded every time I could and still am using plenty of the starting equipment.

I really appreciate all of the advice and input on this though! I absolutely adore this game and really want to see the end of it all and maybe touch on the metagame.

Any more advice or anything would be great though! Hell, even making this thread into an all-out Dark Souls discussion is good enough for me.

I got invaded in the Undead Parish and was at a fork where left went into a cathedral of sorts with a huge, hulking armored dude with a mace and tower shield and right was stairs leading down into a forest (I believe). Which path is recommended?

I was just ambushed by thieves/assassins and then killed the Capra Demon. To be honest, I found him to be the easiest boss to beat so far, but I've been going everywhere killing ice golems and getting beat down a lot while grinding. This game is fantastic.

And I've finally got a bow! Aiming FTW!
