Well your fear is irrational because souls are relatively worthless, especially at that point in the game.
You can easily earn a few thousand souls per minute, and you can beat the game almost as easily at level 1 as at level 35. You literally have nothing of value to loose, rush to the boss fight him and if you should die try again.
I had a friend who was kind of like you, he played slowly and cautiously. I rushed everywhere recklessly like an idiot. I beat the game in a few days, he quit during the tomb of primeval kings.
I've always been the cautious type in every game I play. Even games like Call of Duty, I am a waiter, trying to flesh out every option I have before making an attempt at continuing.
I've been going strong for a few hours now though! Just ended up taking a break once my world got invaded and I got slaughtered by some high leveled griefer named "L0RD K1LL" (creative, no?).

Seriously as cliche as it is experiencing the failure is part of the reward of Dark Souls. This is a game for true gamers. To hell with this modern garbage piles that restart us right at the point we died, that hand us constant quest rewards when all we've done is added bonus time to our accounts. This is a REAL game, one that (should you survive) will make you feel like you actually accomplished something, because goddammit that is what you did.
That is exactly why I wanted to play this game. I love it, I just haven't adapted to the playstyle yet. Getting there though! I do love the sense of accomplishment too.

Honestly, don't worry about dying or grinding. Dying is inevitable. You are going to die in this game and there is not much you can do about that. If you get to a point where it gets ridiculous, don't feel bad looking up a guide or asking for help. Some things border on near ridiculous (like Archer Bro's (tm) in Anor Londo).
You really shouldn't grind for stats and what not. Equipment is much more important than stats unless you want to start PvPing (and if you do want to PvP, you probably will make a new character). Bosses drop a shit load of souls and they can all be defeated by a naked, SL1 character.
Grinding should be practice for combat, not for souls. Learn to fight black knights, because there are a shit load of them later in the game. Learn to run through mobs rather than fighting them, because you will be doing that alot later.
In terms of importance: Skill >>>>>> Items > Stats
I'm learning, slowly. I think my little bout of PvP before I quit just now really helped me out though. Items are really scarce for me, I've upgraded every time I could and still am using plenty of the starting equipment.
I really appreciate all of the advice and input on this though! I absolutely adore this game and really want to see the end of it all and maybe touch on the metagame.
Any more advice or anything would be great though! Hell, even making this thread into an all-out Dark Souls discussion is good enough for me.
I got invaded in the Undead Parish and was at a fork where left went into a cathedral of sorts with a huge, hulking armored dude with a mace and tower shield and right was stairs leading down into a forest (I believe). Which path is recommended?
