But all that is besides the point, which is that the port is pretty bad. This is pretty much an objective fact. There are good ports, there are adequate ports and there are bad ports (and then there's Resident Evil 4, but that's another story). I am not saying Dark Souls is a bad game (or that it's a good game), I'm saying that the PC version was ported poorly. Reasons can be clearly listed, from bad controls, inadequate visual prompts all the way to a lack of basic graphical options.
I guess having a rather optimal setup made me overlook some of the flaws.

In that case i'd only recommend it for people who already have a 360 controller or who don't mind spending 10?-20? on one.
Personally, I prefer the PS3 controller. Demon's Souls was a PS3 exclusive and Dark Souls seems to be designed with that controller in mind.

To be fair, the need to use a peripheral control device isn't new to PC games. The ability to use many different input devices to get different levels of success has been one of the strengths of the PC has it not.
That's the crazy thing isn't it, back in the day when plane / space sims and mech warrior was all the rage, anybody ranting on about these games playing shit with a K&M would have been laughed at by the rest of the PC gaming community and told to get a joystick.

I don't know if it's because PC gamers rallying to the clarion call of m&k due to the console FPS banging on the gates or the fact some can't understand the difference between a WRPG and a console 3rd person ARPG which is designed around the pad, but it's strange that so many PC gamers only use m&k for everything while consoles have a ton of different peripherals and gamers who are willing to use them.

:p Personally I'd say that Dark Souls, in general, is the biggest piece of over-hyped garbage ever.

Buuuuuuuuuut that's coming from a guy who concluded the only reason the game was ridiculously difficult is because the mechanics and controls were designed specifically in a way to get you killed a lot.

Could you explain that controls bit? I find Dark Souls to have very tight, responsive controls.

I can't remember what the controls even were. I literally rented it and took it back a few hours later, convinced that the game wasn't just difficult because of hard enemy attack patterns or just making your character take a lot of damage per hit. I remember clearly thinking that the controls were half-way rigged to be awkward and get you killed as a result of it. But it's been wwwaaayyy too long since my couple hours of gameplay (rented it the day it came out for the 360) for me to remember anything specific about the game other than I didn't like it.

But that's why I put that second part into my first post, it was to explain that while I didn't like the game at all, I fully acknowledge that it could very-well be for a BS reason. :p

The topic starter has been suspended anyways by this topic. I don't think there's any more reason to judge and decide. But, eh, the fire rose. DESHI BASARA!

On-topic anyways, has anyone actually ever played DMC3 in their PC with keyboards and said to themselves "This plays a lot better here than with a controller." Because if they did, then they wouldn't have problems with Dark Souls PC port.

I've been playing it with M&K ever since I got it.

I can't afford a gamepad anyway and I'd rather buy a new game than buying one so I'll stick to my trustworthy M&K thank you very much. Now,it took me a while to get used to the controls and remap everything and eventually it payed out..somewhat.

The mouse sensitivity and camera are quite atrocious, but since I am a stubborn bastard I've tried looking passed it and pressed on by continuing to play.

I've enjoyed the game thus far and will continue doing so until the end.

To those that say that it's not possible to play this game on M&K I say you are wrong.

Regarding the Gamepad > M&K debate I can say this.I've been a PC gamer all my life and don't own any consoles.I've been playing with M&K for a very long time and that is my "standard" play style.I don't find it acceptable for any console Action/RPG or even any game for that matter that gets ported to the PC to not have a functional M&K support.

@ Mirroga: Yes,I've played DMC3 with M&K without ever thinking that I needed a controller.

My 2 cents.

Eh, it's actually pretty funny seeing all these people defend a shitty cash in port. What's more is that some of these people will actually rage at developers for making a shitty cash in port in other games. The hypocrisy is just too sweet.
Except it's not a cash grab port. They were not going to port it at all because they KNEW they were going to fuck it up. They TOLD all these PC gamers signing the petitions that if they did do a port it was going to be subpar. And the PC gamers said they want it anyway.

But then they got EXACTLY what was promised to them, and they complain like you just stole their candy. FS fucking warned you, you can't cry foul now.
It is still a shitty, lazy, cash grab port, just because they warned people doesn't make it any different. Hell, a modder was able to do what a professional game developer could not, MOMENTS after release, if that doesn't scream lazy, I don't know what does. But hey, apparently "warning" works for people like you, so let me just tell EA, Bethsoft, and others to just "warn" gamers that their port is going to be shitty, and everything will be alright! No need for standards of quality and all that stuff!

Also, that line that they "warned" them only works for those who follow the gaming news. For those who don't follow, and just checks steam, what's your excuse for the developers?

I've spoken my piece about this all over these boards, but one statement: " I honestly thaught this was going to be some sort of next generation Skyrim with a darker setting like diablo" .

Then you have been living under a rock and ignoring everything about this game and I don't know why you bought it in the first place. I've spent 100 posts being genteel and not poking anyone as I can't stand conflict and it causes panic attacks, but that statement made some area of my brain heavily twinge and I had to comment on it.

but that is the point, why would you sell a game that is not adapted properly to the keyboard????
I just have to respond to this, since your "ALL PC GAEMS MUST HAVE GOOD MOUSE AND KEYBOARD CONTROLLS!!" schtick really annoys me.

If by your logic games shouldn't be sold on PC unless they have good mouse and keyboard controls, then what about Racing games, hmm? Those are terrible with a keyboard and are best played with a controller or racing wheel. Should those be restricted to consoles now? Or how about Flight Sims? Yeah, some of those let you use a mouse, but the only way to truly get the most enjoyment out of those is by using a joystick. Or what about a Fighting Game? Ever tried playing one of those with a keyboard? ... don't, it fucking sucks.

From what I understand about Dark Souls, it's a game that's much, much better to play with a gamepad of some sort. Yes, the PC port is a bit shoddy to begin with, but at the same time it wasn't designed to be very playable with something other than a controller anyway. In the end, this isn't really the game's fault as much as it is yours for being too stubborn to accept that, yes, a gamepad is a required accessory to have even if you're mostly a PC gamer.

Seriously, wired Xbox 360-pads are worth the money, don't cost too overly much, and work brilliantly on a PC. Just get one already, you'll thank me later.

As someone who bought it on Pc and never played the console version, I am thoroughly enjoying it.

The controls are shoddy? So what, it is nothing that you can not get used to. Hell I have only played it for 7 hours because of the cube of awesome that is GW2 but after the first 2 hours I got used to the KB+M controls, it isn't like they made it damn impossible to play, it just takes some getting used to, like many other game controls.

And uhh, you don't care about graphics or gameplay? what the hell are you playing it for then? awesome PC controls?

And let me just say that they were not even going to make it for PC until that petition was signed.

Jesus talk about....yeah....im going there...........wait for it....

In my time as a PC gamer, I've probably owned at least half a dozen gamepads, at least 2 Joysticks, 2 Racing Wheels, like a dozen Keyboard+Mouse Setups, a Fighting Stick and more.
I've even owned one of these CAD 3D Mouses: http://www.funtech.com/site/templates/spacenavigator.jpg and some other freaky stuff.
THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF A PC!
Okay, I gotta ask, WHAT DA FUQ IS DAT?!?!?!?!

There's really no excuse for not using one for a game DESIGNED with one in mind.
*spins around a ball peen hammer*

Sure there is. Just like there are people out there who find using MK+B uncomfortable there are also people who find using controllers uncomfortable... and not the "I'm unfamiliar with this so I won't try' uncomfortable but the 'if I keep at this I will be in pain' sort of uncomfortable.
Then don't get the game
Not planning to. Won't buy any game that doesn't have at least functional kb+m support... not that it matters in this case because I won't buy games published by Bandai-Namco or use GFWL.

Point being you said there's no reason not to use a controller. There is.

Sorry, but all I'm reading is "OMG IT WASN'T PERFECT OUT OF THE BOX!"

Did you forget what platform you're on? very few games are perfect out of the box for PC. They almost always require some tweaking here or there, some more than others. It shouldn't take away from the experience of the game itself since after all, you should expect this by now.

At least with a PC you have methods to go about fixing developer fuck ups. When a PC game gets ported to a console there are no means to fix it, just live with the mistakes and go on. It's not the first port to be done badly, it sure as hell won't be the last.

Personally I think Bethesda's continuous glitches/mistakes with Skyrim were the bigger travesty. Those were quite literally game breaking, not "omg I don't have the screen resolution I want!"... And it was universal across all platforms. And the best part: From Software even admitted they have 0 experience with the PC platform, so what's Bethesda's excuse again?

The game was made for controllers/console originally so sadly Keyboard and mouse don't suit it well.
This is ENTIRELY incorrect. Or to be more specific, it is not a valid justification. Nothing about Dark Souls' controls is impossible or even difficult to translate to keyboard. It's a fairly standard 3rd person game and its basic control setup isn't unlike many games that have been translated to a mouse&keyboard setup quite well. The most recent example would be Darksiders 2 which I played on M&K with no problems. Prince of Persia games are also a good example.

The ONLY reason M&K controls suck is because the developer did a shit job in that regard.

The biggest problem with the controls is the mouse sensitivity which seems to be inconsistent, jumping from too slow to too fast in a second. It manages to be sluggish, imprecise and hypersensitive at the same time. There is no reason for this aside from bad work by the developer.

The next problem is the control prompts - they are still represented by the A/B/X/Y/RT/etc. icons on screen. If a menu tells me to press Y to get more info about an item, that doesn't help me much. Not only that, but the same prompt can require different input depending on the context - for instance, the A icon corresponds to the Q button, except if you're in a menu, when it suddenly turns to Enter for no apparent reason. Again, there is no reason for this aside from bad work by the developer.

The third problem, which might not be as widespread is the controller itself. I do have one and upon seeing the mess that the game is, I tried plugging it in. But the thing is, it's not a 360 controller so the keys weren't mapped correctly. I wanted to remap it properly, but the game has no options to do so. At all. Once again, there is no reason for this aside from bad work by the developer.
I?ve already adapted to an enigmatic, custom control scheme. It's complicated, but it's something I've always managed to overcome in the majority of games I've engaged in. Perhaps I just have a good memory. However (as you said,) the mouse is TERRIBLE.

Atmosphere, Combat, Graphics were decent (which I dont honestly care about).
Uh...last time I checked that was what made Dark Souls good. That's what I liked about it anyway, the atmosphere and combat piggybacking off of each other to create a dark oppressive world.

EDIT: I can't be the only one getting a little tired of people saying things like "oh look how cute, these people are defending a shitty port" It really rubs me the wrong way. I hate to break it to you, but people don't have to automatically agree with you when it comes to criticisms, and people will argue them with you. That's kind of the point of forums.

Awww, are you not happy with the game you shouldn't have had in the first place? Seriously, no game is perfect, complaining to us about it won't change anything. (Yes, I'm still bitter about Dark Souls coming to PC)
