As someone who did not riot, steal or break anything, i say this

I see a lot of people bitching, but what exactly is wrong with helping your community?

The problem isn't that they have to help the community the problem is they're punishing people for something they haven't done. Its like imagine you live in a neighborhood of about 50 people with a park in it. Then 5 guys go out and trash the park. So then the entire neighborhood is forced to clean up the park for what the two jerks did. Sure your helping your community but you will still feel cheated for having to clean it up.

EDIT: Now that I read the goshdamn thing all he want people to do is Change the age to actually do it at sixteen. No one is being force into doing it.

Easy, the person who riots. Not wanting to do community service is not a crime. I am not saying you don't have some good points but I don't think its fair to accuse people who just don't want to do community service as bad as those causing destruction to society.

The only thing needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

Hell, that pisses me off and i'm not even living in England. As far as I can see this is their way of reducing the costs of the enormous rebuilding that's needed. I don't give a shit if he puts every person arrested during the riots in a janitor costume and tells them to go clean up, but don't try to moralize over how it's the teenagers fault.

isnt community service allready a highschool graduate expectation? Or maybe thats just Catholic schools in Ontario.....either way I can see adding community service to a diploma requirment in englad if they dont have it.

This isnt about that, its all 16yo teens being requiered to do it, not just if they want a diploma.

It's actually a good idea - In the province of Ontario (in Canada), all high school students must complete 40 hours of community service in order to receive their diploma, and it works out quite well. You have 4 years to do 40 hours, and it's a piece of cake and teaches you real world skills and values.

Well, I'm glad I'm not 16 anymore. It does seem a little harsh to make EVERY teenager do community service, especially since most of them did nothing wrong. This is only going to cause problems and solve little to nothing. Totally the wrong approach PM.

So, annoyingly some more news related to the riots. David Cameron (The PM of England) has called for every teenager in the country to undertake community service, probably after seeing what us teens did in the riots. He said that it was a response to the so called "broken society" that we have here in England. He has called for every 16 year old to have compulsory community service as a rite of passage.

IMO: I think that this is a wrong way to fix britain. This is basically putting jobs meant for criminals in the hands of teenagers, most of which havent done anything wrong. I think that the government should be revising all the cuts its been making and actually do something to fix the poverty that probably caused these riots. They should make these jobs open to adults and actually pay them for doing it, thus lifting the unemployement rates.

Anyway, being a 22 year old male from Australia, remembering back to 6 years ago, I think I too would've been aposed to the idea. But now? Especially with the riots happening (or, since the riots happened), I want to quell the fools who partook in this, I want them all jailed, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years almost doesn't bother me, those crooks intentionally started an uproar which greatly effected the people of Great Britain, and its economy, and just how irresponsible this horrible act was, I want justice for this crime.

So asking every sixteen year old to give back to their community, with the added bonus of weeding out those who refuse as likely candidates to cause crime, I like it.

Not sure about the community service bit because in some estates that is what the local drug dealer does. At least he is coming up with ideas unlike the bleeding hearts liberals and die hard communist labour. It is a good idea, though, and one that should be implemented everywhere. I know in my school district we had to do so many hours of community service in order to graduate. Of course, if you'd been in the same district for more than six straight years, you automatically qualify so I think it needs a little work.
