Cameron is NOT making this compulsory!
No he's not, hes merely calling for it to be compulsory. In the future, dont do posts like this if you dont want to get suspended or banned
The only person calling for it to be made compulsory in that article is Boris Johnson. The only thing Cameron has stated is that he want's the National Citizen Service, a voluntary scheme, to be made available to all 16 year olds. Making available and compulsory are not the same thing.

Right general idea (give our teenagers an actual stake in the community) TOTALLY wrong execution (essentially treating them like criminals just for being young).

Something like making membership of the Scouts/Guides more attractive/semi-compulsary (i.e something that teaches you useful team-related skills and gives you something to do as opposed to spending evenings at a bus stop with a bottle of cheap cider/)

Someone probably suggested this already, can't be arsed to double check tho

Wait, is he forcing people to do this, or just asking? Maybe we all need to calm down here.

By the way, it seems very American in here. I feel like I'm at a British version of a Tea Party Rally.

So asking every sixteen year old to give back to their community, with the added bonus of weeding out those who refuse as likely candidates to cause crime, I like it.
Um... What? I would not object to doing community work voluntarily, and have done in the past, but doing it because someone told me to do it because a few IDIOTS decided they could break the law is not something I'd ever do. However, I'm not more likely to cause crime because of it; I just dislike freedoms of anyone being taken away.

Your statement is on par with the whole "People who refuse to do National Service don't deserve to be part of their country, the cowards", forgetting that while some people will refuse to do it for that reason, others will have different reasons. In this case, being opposed to violence, or simply being opposed to enforced regimes, neither of which are directly cowardice. Not wanting to do community service does not equate to being likely to cause crime; laziness or stubbornness are just as likely.

Well this is sort of old news for me. I had to do mandatory community service to graduate from high school here in the US. I thought it was stupid then and I still think it is.

So, annoyingly some more news related to the riots. David Cameron (The PM of England) has called for every teenager in the country to undertake community service, probably after seeing what us teens did in the riots. He said that it was a response to the so called "broken society" that we have here in England. He has called for every 16 year old to have compulsory community service as a rite of passage.

That was only a very brief summary of what i read in the article I saw, but if you want to read some more into this heres my source http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/265305

IMO: I think that this is a wrong way to fix britain. This is basically putting jobs meant for criminals in the hands of teenagers, most of which havent done anything wrong. I think that the government should be revising all the cuts its been making and actually do something to fix the poverty that probably caused these riots. They should make these jobs open to adults and actually pay them for doing it, thus lifting the unemployement rates.

[EDIT] Just mentioning this is the first time a thread I made went in the hot threads section! Dont think I did this thread just for that though.
Yes.... pissing off teenagers that didn't do anything and punishing them is a great way to win the favor of the population.... I smell another riot on the way.

He is not forcing anything, but suggesting that teens do something good instead. And I bet tons of the rioters, were teens, and ALL the rioters are criminals, so it suits them. I wouldnt do any, but if I was in London, I would have not rioted.

We have that here in Ontario, CA, and its a manditory requirement for graduating from high school, most people do a shitty job of it, another handful of people (such as myself) forge the documents, and some people actually quit high school altogether rather than work for free.

OP is perhaps unintentionally misleading the readers into thinking this is forced in any way.

Through the use of language like "Community service" which is generally considered to be mandatory, and his personal comment which appears to imply that it's mandatory also.

David Cameron just wants teenagers to volunteer to clean shit up. It's a weird, face-saving idea but it's not that evil.

I don't really see the problem with this. We have Clean Up Australia Day, where pretty much all school students, and anyone in the community that wants to walks around picking up rubbish. That day is by no means, "IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD" day.

It makes perfect sense as we all know that 16 Year old British people are dangerous people. I mean I remember when I was sixteen and I would get up to crazy things like studying for exams and taking responsibility.

What the heck is Cameron thinking??? Those that need the community service are those that don't care about society, not those who actually want to contribute something to society other than hooliganism.
I don't really see what the big deal is. in Ontario you can't graduate from high school without completing a certain amount of Community Service
