Probably the greatest mod ever made, bought Combined Op's for this. So much potential and will definitely be ported to the upcoming Arma 3

I hope they turn this into a full-fledged, stand alone game, as many other mods have been in the past, but until then, I'll probably miss out.
The developer has already said he won't be doing that -- it would be too much work.

Anyway, my friends have been playing this and they say it's amazing. Also I've seen a few videos with the same opinion.

You can look around like that by holding alt as well. Surprisingly easy and natural.
Yeah, I would usually recommend something akin to this for normal infantry play.

Also, an additional note to new players:

If an option such as freelook gets stuck on, it's because you have accidentally double tapped the key. Double tapping the key again will cause this to unstick. Applies to most of the functions of the game.

In other news, my character died yesterday, while crawling around the northern airfield. Unsurprisingly, there seems to be hand grenade spawns and every sort of weapon, device or consumable there. The bandit's survivor friend shot me after I emptied a stanag into his bandit. I'm fairly sure the zombie horde munching on that survivor's shoulder took him out too.

Tis' truly a glorious game.
Was this around the Northern Barracks? I was chillin in there when I see a Bandit in the door who opens fire on me and then disappears because YOU HAVE ALERTED THE HORDE! I don't know whether he died or disconnected but he was gone when I looked for him. Also my survivor bro was in the barracks with me so it wasn't him. (All this assumes you're a bandit and it was me you shot at.)

This sounds pretty remarkable. How does the engine fare as compared to, say, STALKER: Pripyat? How's the animation? How's the UI? How's the learning curve? Is it intuitive? A chore to play?

I am admittedly intrigued.

The animation if fairly well done, but close-up, people do look rather Uncanny Valley-esque. Thankfully, you'll mostly see them as a tiny dot in your sight. The UI is nice and clean, only popping up when you use it. It takes a bit getting used to, however. Similar with the controls, they work well, but are rather complicated. It's all about getting that muscle-memory. The engine works rather well, too, with a very pleasing feeling of space; you've got miles and miles to play around with, and the graphics are fairly nice. Plus, for a game with that much stuff going on and complex calculations and whatnot, it's fairly stable. And like STALKER, it's one of the few games where nights truly are dark.

Now, ArmA 2 is, as a military-game who's core tenant is realism, very, very hard. I'd get some practice under my belt first of all, as it takes a while to get the feel of it. It's one of those games you really do need to grow into, but once you do, you feel awesome.

The sort of gameplay it provides is rather different to most affairs. It's not at all like CoD, where you've got fairly small, boxy levels and shoot down enemies behind crates at roughly ten to fifty meters. It's usually more along the lines of 100+ meters, come to think of it, and you sometimes have to take drop-off into consideration to get a hit.
It -can- be a chore, is what I'm trying to say. Lots of the game is spent on your stomack in the undergrowth, trying to get a bead on the enemies at the horizon. But the experience is fairly intuitive in all, with several interesting little mechanics you never see in other, more streamlined FPS's. And lest we forget... If you get tired of trying not to die face down in someone's hedge, you can always just hop into a tank. Or a gunship.

Thinking of doing this myself. I've been watching various videos on youtube and have gotten the itch to try this mod for myself.

Nahh, my encounter was outside a hangar.

I died again today, joined an unpopulated server and some bandits literally spawned on top of us. I guess that's what happens when you join a non-full server.

Ah well, I'm only a bandito because of russians who shoot on sight so I had to kill a few of them to save my bro.

I've had people spawn on me too, it used to be a case of "lets bro up together and tear shit up" but now it's more like "lul i killed u faggit hur hur XD" and that's the most annoying thing to be honest. People who play the game like CoD could potentially be the death of this mod. I want something to come out to get rid of them, so we can go back to how it was before, where people worked together regardless of whether they're in a VOIP chat or not...

I hate the players, bunch of backstabbing bastards >.>

So yes I am a bandit, a lone wolf (On occasion my friend plays but it's so hard to meet up) and I will never trust any player EVAR AGAIN!

Despite the players, I LOVE THIS MOD!

I got the game purely so I could play it, I'm pretty sure vanilla Arma II is good too, but I love DayZ too much right now to care.

Man I played again today for a few hours. I hooked up with some reddit guys on teamspeak and we went to a store to look for loot. We spent 5 minutes trying to get the store without alerting some Zombies. We made it in but somehow alerted a single zombie. After we shot him the rest of the horde tried to get in the door and we shot them all up.

So we started to stock up on food, water etc. Suddenly one of our 4 team members yells "Ive been shot - Im dead Im dead!"
That was followed by a second shot. We all scrambled. After 5 minutes of no fire we started to do a check ok one alive up injured in the back, one dead, myself fine and our sniper fine.

I went behind the counter and then realised there was one too many of us. Two snipers on the ground, and no name tags.

I started to yell on teamspeak - "WHAT COLOUR SHIRT DO YOU HAVE WHAT COLOUR SHIRT!"

After a tense 30 seconds (due to the guy I was with not keying up on teamspeak because of panic) I finally hear.

"It's the guy between us!"

I took the shot.

We found out later that the guy must have had only two bullets left in his rifle, and had come in the back door of the store and just shot in desperation, without realising how many of us there was.
OMG *Ejaculates*

I have to play this.

It's a fun mod that I think is worth getting Arma II etc for, and when my mate plays sometimes and we meet up it just adds to the fun, the one life system is a *****, but it gives you a chance to start again and approach the game differently.

I love the concept of this mod, but unfortunately I hate Arma 2's mechanics so I'm going to have to pass. :(

I got jumped in the airfield last night along with a team of six. This morning after managing to stay alive for over a week, I started again.

I spawned in Electro (the second biggest city) which I had never been to before. After alerting a horde I ran to the grocery store in the hope Id find another player there - I did, and thankfully he shot the Zeds chasing me, and not me. I talked to him for a bit and we parted ways, only for me to shoot him in the back almost 5 minutes later when he wasn't looking.

Eventually I made my way out of the city, and went into a firestation in the north of the city and found to my utter joy, a silenced mp5 (extremely rare). However I wasn't alone and while climbing the central tower I happened on a guy waiting for me on the top floor.

Luckily I spawned back on the docks of electro. As quickly as I could I made straight for the firehouse, and got there just in time to see my murderer about to leave. With only 7 rounds in my m1911 I downed him from behind and quickly took back my mp5sd and took his backpack loaded with food and other supplies. Taking care of the few Zeds I had attracted with gunfire I made for the hills and escaped the city.
