I love dead space, as a series. I love that it's horror so tame all it does is make me jump. I love the controls. I love the different types of necromorph. I love Isaac Clarke, From his fractured mind to hi helmet that he shouldn't be able to see out of. And when I heard dead space 3 was coming out, I was very happy.

But then I saw the dead space 3 is, in fact, dead space as directed by Michael "Lets blow shit up" Bay. And it appears to have been reduced to another generic shooter. Mass effect 3 without the rpg, aliens or appeal. And once again, a series is ruined at it's third installment by cover based shooting.

And since when could Isaac Clarke combat roll?

Y U NO LIKE Gear of Dead Space 3?!
Surely we all learned by now that all games must strive to become the ultimate in shootery goodness, DP3 is just lacking in the brown department, but I'm sure the next 16 sequels can fix that too.

Hmm, Retake Mass Effect was named because Of the whole take earth back Thing...
Maybe it should Be "Destroy the Marker...Pens that Ea used to add shooter gamplay to dead space with. Yeah"

It looks like the only cover-based parts are the bits where you fight humans, which makes sense because you don't want to get your ass shot off. I'm betting the necromorphs parts are going to be old fashioned Dead Space, though.

I know this opinion is unpopular, but I actually like games that have cover systems. It's probably because I like Gears of War a whole bunch.

Dead Space 2 already ruined the series. At least Dead Space 1 was a tiny bit scary, with a faceless protagonist and even more faceless monsters. That's what makes horror scary. Dead Space 2 gave the hero a personality and gave the impression the future isn't too bad after all, which totally destroyed any focus on the monstrosity of human nature.

It just about made me cry too. I don't want to shoot humans in Dead Space; I want to shoot monsters. I just really liked the idea that I was playing as someone with the ability to defend themselves, but without the moral capacity to actually kill a human being unless backed into a corner. The two times that Isaac was forced to kill people directly in Dead Space 2, it was in the form of significant, in-your-face, life-or-death struggles with major characters that obviously took quite a toll on Isaac's mental well-being. Why would they go from something that compelling and then turn Dead Space 3 into yet another faceless mook shooting gallery?

I do get that they probably want to make EarthGov into a bigger threat this time around, but they shouldn't let that plot necessity turn one of the few video game protagonists that isn't a genocidal maniac into another generic, bullet-shrugging space marine. They should have kept Isaac just as vulnerable to bullets as always, and have him run, sneak, and problem solve to overcome any enemy soldiers that stand in his way. It would be much more interesting and intense than any direct confrontation could be. But nope, we can't have interesting; we're getting Gears of War with space zombies instead.

Dead space 1 and 2 rocked my socks so hard I hope the third doesn't ruin the whole series as the first 2 filled me adrenaline and horror at the same time from running away from necromorphs when you have no weapons ammo or armor :) love it

"It seems like the mechanics and the atmospheric goals are diametrically opposed. Everything's supposed to be terrifying, but the gameplay is about the same old sense of action hero empowerment. You can't be terrified when you're a fucking walking death machine." - Ashly Burch.

I think that sums it up.

Guess what? You haven't played it either.

And yet here we are, in yet another thread judging the game's worth by 5 minutes of trailer.

The first Dead Space was amazing. A fresh take on the survial horror genre and pretty much the perfect evolution of the "action horror" formula created by Resident Evil 4.

Dead Space 2 was just more of the same, only with a slighty greater emphasis on action and a more personal story. Still, it was really really good.

Dead Space 3 looks intriguing, but I don't really know about that new John Carver. He just seems very misplaced.

Still, I'll keep my eyes open for this game and try to remain positive about this new direction.

I'm more distraught about the buddy system.

Also, why does cover based shooting only seem to happen in 3rd person shooters where you can magically see the entire battlefield while safe from harm? So stupid. Put that shit in a FPS so that you are as blind as you are safe. Then they could have this revolutionary feature where you can lean to the side to see around the cover while staying mostly safe...

Change is fine... If Dead Space was still necromorphs in space it would have to find a really contrived reason to a: get Isaac back on a spaceship and b: bake necromorphs come back. And cover mechanics will be fine, I mean, they improved Max Payne 3...

I hate to point it out dude, but having a coversystem doesn't make it a gears of war clone.

the same way a levelling system doesn't make a Final Fantasy clone.

It doesn't take a genius to notice a cover based shooting mechanic. Especially one that the devs have been harping on about, quite a bit. That's what I'm irritated by. Dead space was never a cover based shooter, and Isaac never killed people, only monsters. I'm not judging the game by the trailer, I'm judging it by that. I am willing to bet you anything you want that dead space 3 is going to be another generic 3rd person shooter, just with a couple of necromorphs.

Dead Space, survival horror?

I'm sorry, Dead Space is surival horror? What, just because you are fighting wierd non-human beings as to survive/not die? Survival horror isn't just that. If it was, Call of Duties Zombie mode could be classified as survival horror.

Survival horror is by definition the art of surviving, scraping together weapons out of old lead pipes, and scavenging for food in the darkest of deep places, all the time while fighting off terrifying enemies with nothing but bare fists and hefty chunks of wood; the locales barely lit, often creeping through darkness just waiting for the next horror to fall on you.

Not wandering around in a slightly shady corridors, shooting strange alien tentacle creatures with laser cutters. All the time while not having to worry about food/ammunition once.
