it doesn't change the fact that once you know the plot, theme & dangers of the game, there will be significantly less of an unknown to fear, and you will see a reduction in repeatability.harhol post=9.73884.815944 said:A game which successfully builds & maintains a haunting atmosphere will continue to be frightening even on subsequent playthroughs. I've played through the earlier Silent Hill games several times and they still give me the chills. Granted, the experience isn't quite the same the second time around, but the horror is so well integrated into the overall experience that the games possess longevity above & beyond any plot revelations. I don't necessarily think Dead Space will achieve this but I'm cautiously optimistic.Hawgh post=9.73884.815850 said:Be that as it may, I said that because a frightening and convoluted plot decays even quicker. Inform me of a single horror movie in which the key ingredient isn't something that's resolved somewhere around the climax or end of the film.harhol post=9.73884.815687 said:Not all horror relies on shocks though...
...in fact most good horror doesn't rely on shocks at all.
How are you going to deliver the same experience again, without erasing the auditions memory?
I also think horror movies and horror games are incomparable because of the nature of involvement. What makes good survival horror so brilliant is the delicate balance it strikes between the fear of failure and the fear of the unknown -- you know you have to press on but you don't want to. A movie, on the other hand, requires no involvement from its audience other than the suspension of disbelief. That's why I think the best horror games will always be better than the best horror movies.
you forgot 7. I hope Yahtzee reviews this soon and roasts it.Decoy Doctorpus post=9.73884.816859 said:Remember the order folks! If a review posts a review of a game you don't agree with (even if you haven't played the game) your observation flow must follow the established pattern.
1: They are corrupt.
2: They are retarded.

4: Numerical scores are worthless.

6: All reviews are worthless.
Bollocks is it. It's like saying only a mascochist should review a punch in the balls.harhol post=9.73884.817092 said:Ah, looks like I misinterpreted your point. I thought you were critcizing the genre itself.Hawgh post=9.73884.816851 said:As such, I believe that claiming poor repeatability is an unfair criticism of a horror game. That's the only thing I'm saying.
This is always true.Decoy Doctorpus post=9.73884.816859 said:The reviewer does not apreciate the genre and therefore should not review the game (one of my favourites)

If you've actually played it, good for you for having the only worth while opinion here. As to IGN. First, you should always look to more than one source for a review, second you should give little creedance to the numerical value and just read what they have to say. The IGN reviewer said "Horror fans rejoice" and really liked it. So it was a good review. I think the games biggest flaw will be that it will appeal to a smaller audience than say COD4 only because of its genre. If you are a fan of Horror/action a-la RE4 (which had no horror to it) this could be a really good game for you. But don't trust me just yet I haven't played it, I preordered and need to pick up my copy. **shakes at desk at work in fetal position staring at the clock thinking "will 5:00 never come"**Goon165 post=9.73884.817124 said:Jesus Christ guys knock it off with the speculative bashing, go fucking play it and then tell us what you think god
I've played it and it's fucking good
Considering a 7 is the lowest any game seems to be able to get (due to reviews being bought) is a 3/4 score, thus a 7,5.ThaBenMan post=9.73884.815823 said:Uhh, last I checked, 8.7 is a pretty damn good score. It's almost a 9.
Nice. "Let me show you..."tendo82 post=9.73884.814077 said:Unless the game has a character who looks like Sam Neil and tears his eyeballs out halfway through the game, I'll probably pass.
