Bah, threads are meant to be dragged off-topic.

The main issue with GfWL is the pants-on-head-retarded way it does things. For instance, there have been cases where a game constantly says it needs to be patched and goes to patch itself with GfWL, but GfWL itself needs to be patched before you can patch the game, only it doesn't tell you that.

Then if you use an online profile and for whatever reason you can't sign into it one day it won't let you carry on from your last save, so you'll have to fix it or start a new game.

This was Microsoft's last attempt to "save" PC gaming; the fact that they think it needs saving (or indeed, them to save it) shows how out of touch they are with the platform.
Hm, that is indeed strange! Like I said, the only issues I've really had are the odd dropout. Fallout 3 seems to be able to cope with carrying on the last save regardless of wether or not I'm logged into LIVE or not.

The only "problem" I have is that, no matter what I do or what boxes I check, it will not remember my username / password at all after a reboot. Oddly enough, the only other application that does this is Windows Live Messanger...another MICROSOFT product running on a MICROSOFT OS - Do I hear the Irony warning siren? Oh yes!

Other apps like YIM and AIM remember my usernames and passwords quite happily. Fairness also insists that MS Internet Explorer 8 remembers my site login usernames and passwords just fine if I ask them to.

I'm just puzzled as to why GfWL and WLM don't...*shrugs*

Wardy
Well, I think they've patched some stuff. And yeah, I get that to. I leave GfWL to sign in automatically, but because it uses my hotmail it somehow reasons that I want that password saved too; deselect one and it'll turn the other off too.

See, it's little fuck-tard things like that just add to how shit it is at whatever the fuck it's supposed to be doing anyway.

If you want to know how important GfWL is to Microsoft, the answer's not at all. I remember a guy from PC Gamer saying he'd been taken to show Windows 7, and he asked if they had any plans to link GfWL with it in any way (this was after he'd been talking about advantages of gaming on Windows 7) and the guy hadn't even heard of GfWL.

Make multiplayer modes balanced for all players and if you implement a leveling system make sure it is in a way that will give all players access to what they want or need at a certain time, and do not give players game breaking bonuses for getting a few lucky kills together.
Guilty parties BBC2 (although getting weapons based on the class you use and just getting bonus exp for kill streaks is a start)/ MW2

I'd rather have a delay than a shit game. Just sayin.

Replayable missions, and skippable cutscenes are a must.

Also, fucking cheat codes. Bring them back.

im not saying being succesful is selling out I was saying there are better examples of the percived selling out rather than picking the easy option and pointing at halo
Erm, yes... yes you are. You said "how is halo selling out when there are only 6 titles" making the distinct connection between succes of a series and selling out. The number of games doesnt matter... its when you get things like Halo: Kids or some crap like that... THATS selling out.

Game Maker's Deadly sins:

-Premium DLC: thou shalt only charge for premium content if it could conceivably stand alone, charging for updates, new weapons and features is bullshit nickel-&-dime exploitation

-Platform Ports: thou shalt not commit the sin of lazy ports. Port: yes, but alter to suit the platform; HD cutscenes + six-axis support for PS3; Developer-console, mod support, full customisation and dedicated servers for PC.

-Gameplay first: while graphics are relevant for appreciating a game's art, the gameplay must be paramount (Heavy Rain... just no)

-err

-that's it...

-for now

I acquired some of my own by playing King's Quest:

1) Don't make things too context sensitive
2) No deaths by falling down stairs
3) Make the game beatable without a strategy guide a.k.a. Of course! I was supposed to throw the bridle at the cobra snake and it would turn into a horse. Makes perfect sense.

Don't put enemy's names clearly above them, really it removes the whole stealth part.

Stop releasing every little detail about a game plot, game mechanics prior to release.
If movie studios gave away the information game publishers do, no one would watch any films.

I do not agree with how you essentially said that halo is low quality and is a sell out.

I enjoy the game the most out of all my games and there's enough quality there to keep people around for a good 10 year span of there series not to mention that It has a lot of thought put into the back story of the games.

As for a sin if to even the developer if you think it is still abysmal after your first build of your game DON NOT JUST RUN WITH IT!

Why? How is a game eventually becoming multiplatform - and thus being enjoyed by more people - a bad thing?

You know what? I worded that one bad (like right now). What I meant was if you're going to make games for one console, don't go and make your game for another and not have it for the original. Fans of the original will get pissed. Sure, all will be forgiven, but when it's first announced, people might get pissed. It's not a bad thing, it just leads to certian people getting angry.
The point of this was these were things I noticed tend to cause a lot of rage. Honestly, #7 isn't so much fault of the games as it is fault of the fanboys.

TL;DNR all comments...

Mine is: If you're going to go multi platform, optimize for each platform. Especially if you're going to put the game on PC! Locked framerates (Transformers!!), lack of high visual settings like AA or higher res textures (Mass Effect, Transformers, Dark Void) and nit picky things like no control customization are all baaaaaaad. Most people who have gaming PCs and consoles would rather pick up a game on the PC but often it's better not to.

You can not have a good game if that game does not have (rather well done)variety.

It really hasn't sold out. It just hasn't been any good since the first [2].

I wrote a blog post on this some time ago: http://arkadychenko-theblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/three-golden-rules-for-good-games-to.html

The essence of the article is to say that the deadliest sin a game can make is to take control from the player. Anything it does which reminds us that we're holding a controller and sitting in front a screen and not actually leaping across rooftops killing dudes is a sin.
