My dog was put to sleep yesterday after being diagnosed with cancer...
This has really gotten me down, since I grew up with this dog, and now he's gone.
I couldn't even say goodbye, since a friend of my family was watching over him... :(
Sorry if I'm getting you guys down. My question to you guys is: Have you ever had an encounter with death inside the family or pets?
Edit: Treatment wasn't an option. It was a form of cancer that was inherited from his dad...
she was 12 years old and the cancer has spread far beyond being treatable.
Basicly every organ was infected.

Yes, sadly several times. I work with animals every day, so they become part of the family very quickly. I know how hard it is, and I'm so sorry

Treatment would probably be a better solution, but whatever.

Treatment for doggie cancer is expensive shit.
Which would you prefer: The dog suffers through multiple chemo sessions with little hope of improving, or gets put down quickly and painlessly.

This was the more humane choice.

I love cats, my family has had a series of cats ever since I was a child, and believe me: you will mourn, you will move on, and you'll probably get another pet that you will love just as much.

On the lighter side of things, remember what Saint Carlin said about dogs (paraphrased): The best thing about them is that you can go to the pet store and get another one that looks just like your old one!

Chin up, you'll be fine.

Indeed I have, my friend. And I feel your pain. I know what it is to lose your best friend. I've had so many dogs and cats and now I have none... The important thing to do is just to let everything out and never to forget that puppy, because I am beting that he/she never forgot about you :)

Depending on where the cancer is it may be inoperable or treatment may just continue the suffering. It sucks but in some cases it is nicer just to put the pet down.

My family had to make this choice with one of our pets recently. It was a real shock because we though she just had a infected sore because she got them alot so we didn't worry. It was really upsetting cuz she was the sweetest dog I'd ever met and she was only 7. The worst part was that our other dog was confused about where she had gone and got excited whenever someone came over cuz he hoped it was her coming back. So yeah I understand how you feel. Also sorry if I've upset someone.

Something similar happened to me about 2 months ago. Our collie cross Max was so full of life until like July? And i swear in a matter of weeks he became so lethargic and developed lumps on either side of his throat which just got bigger and bigger. I assume it was lymphoma. I work on placement so i got home one day to find him gone as my parents had taken him to get put down cos he couldnt breathe properly or even eat. It was truly the worst loss i have ever felt being that i have never lost anyone before. Part of me thought he would get surgery or something but he was 10 i guess and i suppose that's a decent age but I still get sad thinking about him. we only managed about 2 weeks without a dog before it drove us nuts and we got a border collie. He isn't Max and i still miss Max but he eases the pain as does the retriever pup my dad insisted on getting lol. :) Get a new dog, it helps. And it wasnt something we did to replace Max cos they are all different, Max was a much softer person. Keep your chin up and find a new puppy to love ;)

No family deaths, but many of my friend's have had MANY people in there families die, and I have had many pets that have passed on.

I suppose, if your idea of humane is giving up.
If not giving up means the creature I care about suffers more pain than it would if I let it die calmly and without pain, then it deserves to be given up on.
I've been through this. I've seen the pathetic look my dog gave me. I saw the pain he was barely enduring. I've seen the look he gave me begging- PLEADING for me to end it.
Don't give me that giving up shit. What the fuck else was I supposed to do?

Weird to see this topic pop up today, as it's the one year anniversary of my best friend's death. She died suddenly, no one got to say goodbye and to make matters worse I had been extremely busy for a few months before her death (so had she, she was pregnant and starting a new life with her boyfriend/baby's father). So yes, it's tough to lose a loved one.

I've also lost four cats, all of them having lived long, happy lives.

On the flipside, I've also lost a hamster - but it barely affected me, I wasn't at all attached to said hamster.

Yup, not so humane now. And is cost still a factor if it comes to saving your loved one?
To some people, yes.
My family couldn't afford things like that. She would tell me that herself, if she weren't already fucking dead.

It's cute that you do not understand the monster that cancer is and that once it has spread to every organ in your body there is no way to rid of it. I don't believe there is any doggy chemo treatments available but even if there were once it has spread so far there is no hope. Even if u do manage to rid of early signs of cancer the chancer are that it will recur. Sorry if this upsets anyone. Ignorance makes me sad.

Have you even owned an animal? It's not called giving up, it's doing the best by the dog. All the chemo sessions and the time in between, with little hope of improving? That's fucking suffering at its worse.

God, my mum had to go through chemotherapy. It was hell for her, and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. So why do it to a dog who most likely won't get any better? Why put them through suffering, for them to probably suffer their way to a long, slow death anyway?

Putting them down is quick and painless. They go quietly. No more pain and confusion (it doesn't understand what's going on) for the poor animal.

Oh, and a tip? If somone had their beloved pet dog that they grew up with put down yesterday...don't tell them that they gave up. That's pretty fucking cruel.

Firstly, I'm sorry to hear that your dog had to be put down.

I had to go through the same thing with mine not too long ago. We had two westies, one young one called Tess who had to be put down on my birthday when the vet diagnosed her with such advanced diabetes there was no hope for her. She'd spent the entire week before this being so depressed (isn't it strange how dogs can also get depressed?). The other one, Misty, was already very old and had to be put down a week later with multiple issues. She was the runt of the litter, so not a massive surprise.

Then my Dad died when I was about 6 years old, so never knew him. My grandad passed away about 3-4 years ago, and my step-nan (who we only found out wasn't our real nan after she passed) about 4 weeks later.

Not to mention my best friend committing suicide 2 years ago.

There's not many of my family left now... *live every day to the fullest*
