Fallout. Fallout.

Fallout fallout fallout fallout fallout.

Fallout 2.

I'm sorry, those games are perhaps the deepest, most interesting and best written RPG's of any sort that I've ever played.

If you haven't played them, do so immediately.

I'll wait.

Fallout 1 & 2 are turn based 3 is a pile of crap so does not count.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura is also one of the best, and in a similar style to the old Fallouts.

Pokemon puts pretty much every other turn based series to shame.

It is *ridiculously* strategic at high level competitive play.

Yeah, I think Fallout 2 is probably the better game, because it fixes Fallout's problems, but they must be experienced chronologically for maximum enjoyment.
Damn...that puts me in an awkward decision. I know I want mazimum gameplay...but I hate skipping content and story. Ah fuck it, I think I'll install Nr.2.
Don't listen to him. Fallout 1 is the better game. Fallout 2 is better technically and has some stellar design but it suffers from a lack of focus and alot of stupid elements creeping in.

Don't even have to go *that* deep to figure out that FO1 is better. I mean.. it has The Master!

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door,

While it may SEEM simple you essentially have...
-At least 3 different strategies concerning basic enemies utilizing two basic methods of attack.
-Timed Hits based on player skill that are different for every attack.
-A selection of Party Members each with different Basic Attacks and different Flower Point Skills
-A chargable "Super Move" Meter based on your Timed Hit Success.
-A fairly impressive skill system involving Badges and Badge Points.
- Super Moves gained through Plot Progression
- "Background Elements" that effect the flow of battle (members of the Audience will hurt or help both you and your enemies.
- Different types of enemies that always effect how they need to be fought.

It's a damn deep battle system and it's probably the best turn based system I've ever played.

I was hoping I'd get to be the first to say it. Fallout and Fallout 2 are some of the best RPGs I've ever played, and some of the only turn-based ones that I don't hate a lot.

I say Pokemon because of all the possible stuff, but 1000 Year Door is pretty deep too.

I don't consider Build to be a major part of the actual quality of the combat system. To me Pokemon is just plain boring. The primary challenge and depth is in building your team, which has nothing to do with the actual battle system (as far as I'm concerned). The actual battle system (in my opinion) is a simple Trading Hits (I go, you go, I go, you go) system with nothing more than a glorified RPS ability system on top of it. Now if it had an interesting element like the Shin Megami Tensei series's Press Turn Mechanic, or a varied speed mechanic like FFX or one of its quality clones, I might be a little more persuaded. But as it stands the battle system is primarily what keeps me from playing Pokemon.

I suppose I just don't see where the "depth" comes into the actual battle system.

I gotta agree with people saying Pokémon.
But perhaps because I was ten when I first played blue and was absolutely amazed by it.
I wonder what my reaction would be if I played my first Pokémon game at this point.
I'd probably love it...

I really want to say baldur's gate since it was real-time turn-based, but even if we counted it Pokemon blow it out of the water for depth of gameplay.

Baldur's Gate is deep because it is complex, Pokemon is complext because it's deep. I hope that made sense.

How the fuck does that work out? Sorry, but I cannot see that happening. I actually think that's an Oxymoron.

EDIT: Not trying to insult you, just really confused about the statement.

Your characters take "turns" when you command them to do something, it just all occurs in the real time plane.

I used to love Heroes of Might and Magic 2. Not 3 or whatever else, but 2. It's great.

Pokemon. I shit you not.

EVs, IVs, Tier lists, Movesets, Type Matching, STAB, Hold Items, Base Stats.

Sub-genres of pokemon. Special Sweepers, Physical Sweepers, Physical Tanks, Special Tanks, Buffers, Debuffers, Hazers, Pseudo Hazers, Special Walls, Physical Walls.

All of these combine with the near 500 pokemon to make an insanely deep game.

And an INSANE competitive community.
Actually I'd agree with this.

C'mon Pokémon Soul Silver!
