Okay, picture the scene:

Hawaii.
Entrance to the vault is on top of an active volcano.
One sacrifice to be dropped into the lava every 10 or so years or the vault will be dropped into the lava.
Everyone must wear tiki masks.
This makes me happy.

Vault 451- Everything is on fire always, and everyone walks around with one of those lava suits. Good luck during childbirth!

A Vault where there is a lethal gas leak a few days into the occupation of the vault, and everyone must wear full face gas masks at all times, each gas mask is identical and covers the whole head, giving people limited annonimity.

A Vault with a set population limit of 500, whenever a child is born the entire Vaulst must come together and vote on one Vault Dweller that is to be killed off.

A Vault that reduces the amount of sleep for every Vault Dweller by one second every day, at first it would be too gradual to tell, but after a few decades the amount of sleep would be drastically reduced.

A Vault where there is a constant Superlow frequency sound playing at all times. Not loud enought to hear but the low frequency would cause everything in the Vault to vibrate slightly at all times.

A Vault where there is no privacy, there are no doors or walls besides those needed to hold the roof up, cameras and microphones record everything, and there is a room consisting of many computers, there you can search someone's name and see what they were doing or saying at any time, and special chips are in their brains that causes them to say anything that comes across their mind.

A Vault where one person is randomly picked every week and that person must choose to kill another Vault dweller or be exiled from the Vault.

A Vault with a population of 500 and consiting of 400 rooms, every month a large group of radroaches is let into the Vault, there are no weapons so the only way to survive is to enter one of the 400 rooms, but the doors are desinged to close after one person has entered the room, leaving 100 people to fend for themselves against the radroaches. After the population goes under 400 the attacks stop until the population reaches 500 again.

Populate a vault with a reasonably large group of people, and a corresponding number of Bibles or similar holy books. Create two versions of the book, each with one passage changed slightly. Remove all entertainment (musical instruments, writing utensils, sports equipment etc).

Populate a vault with 15 people, and enough food to feed them for a year. On every food ration, print a table explaining how long the rations will last depending on how many people they're serving (example: Feeding 15 - one year, Feeding 10 - a year and four months, Feeding 5 - a year and eight months, etc). Everyone in the vault has their own living space, giving them the option to have privacy and avoid socialization.

Populate a vault with several young children. Remove all mirrors and reflective surfaces (spoons, glass, etc). Evaluate how their perception of themselves develops, and what influence their peers have on that perception. Additionally - provide make up, hair gel, razors, etc, as well as propaganda posters and reading material regarding what an ideal man/woman looks like.

Uhh... I think they'd figure out to climb on top of one another before they decided to slaughter one another.
That's more optimistic than you think it is. Have you ever had a puzzle that you couldn't figure out, that you looked at in a million different ways and still couldn't figure it out? The "obvious" answer isn't always obvious.

Throw in the survival-instinct-makes-us-violent factor. People going into the Vaults are doing so to escape what is viewed at their time to be an inevitable nuclear holocaust. They end up in this Vault, not knowing anyone, not knowing if anyone is trustworthy, and then have to work together to figure this out, while they know the world outside is blowing up? Not as easy as it first appears at all.

There's also the isolation factor. This room is small for ten people. Tall but small and with no way of finding privacy. There are constant irritations that will settle in after the first hour as people realise they have to use toilets in the full view of everyone else, or ask everyone to look away. With the women, imagine the irritation at the men having the full ability to look, and perhaps vice versa. Fear settles in through this, alongside mistrust.

Out of twelve randomly selected people, there is also the probability that someone has an unknown or unexpressed mental issue. They might even try to manipulate others if, in their panic after getting into the Vault and assuming the bombs have dropped, they immediately think of the "kill others to break the screen" option, assuming the Vault itself is a sick joke designed to turn them into murderers. Despair can do that to people.

Not to mention, have you ever tried to stand on top of a group of twelve people without falling down? It's actually a demanding acrobatic feat a lot of the time. It takes co-ordination and often friendship. And we know from reality TV that groups of randomly selected people do NOT all immediately become friends with each other if they end up in a tightly packed situation with no way out. If they work together it is not through sturdy ties but a mutual goal, and this one might not seem so inspiring when they find themselves locked in the Sphere in the first place.
Except that 'climbing' is not abstract, nor is your proposition a 'puzzle'.

All you've done is place something high. Instinctually they would know they would have to climb something to get on to it, very quickly they would either climb on top of each other or dismantle the equipment around the place and build something to climb.
The idea of killing one another to form a ladder? Man, that's some fucked up shit. No healthy human being would think of that as a first response to the situation.

A vault filled with Minecraft fans, where there is only one flashlight, and the hallways are filled with traps. However, the traps only function when it is dark. Cue insanity.

Vault 1001
The Vault in addition to the normal stuff has a number of machines that can modify DNA so that the subjects can basicly Shapeshift into any form that suits their liking. But their DNA is unstable so they must change shape every day or they will die. Is set to open 200 years after it is sealed. Because they Subjects need a daily Shapechange they cannot live far from their vault.

Vault 1002
Built ten feet away from Vault 1001 this vault has the same machines but the subjects only gain the ability to use it on their 16 birthday and they can only use it once and their DNA must be transformed completly making them almost the exact oposite of who they were before. They also have to use the machine or the whole vault will explode. Will open 200 years after it is sealed on the same day as Vault 1001. Also note that the Subjects of vault 1001 will most likey be very over protective of their machines and will proably protect they with their lives.

Vault 1003
The vault will be filled with some of the most brilliant people in the world but their will only be one from each job so their will only be one of each job and the one will be the best and most brilliant of his job. The vault is equiped with a devise that supplys a immortality mutagen and all the original Subjects will be effected. But they all need to take a dose of it each day to live. the machines that make the mutagen only have enough for the original group and has none for the new borns.

Oh, I just came up with a completely evil idea:

Upon entering the vault, anyone over the age of 16 will undergo gender-change surgery. They will only be provided with clothes and other items normally used by those of their new gender (i.e. ex-females will be given boxers and ex-males will be given bras). All subjects would be aware that everyone else over 16 underwent the surgery and would be free to discuss it publicly. Some abnormality is to be expected, but anyone who deliberately avoids conforming will be publicly punished. Other vault protocols along these lines would include ones where either the males or females are left unchanged, but the other gender undergoes the surgery. Due to the obvious fact that such a society would be unsustainable in the long run, the vault will open in 30-40 years. Alternatively, children could be "imported" from other vaults and the vault could remain closed for an extended period (about 100 years).

The goal of this experiment would be to observe the impacts of traditional gender-identity on subjects who are forced to assume the role of the opposite gender, as well as impacts on the group as a whole. Possible results: mental dysfunction and/or breakdowns, changes in ideals, anti-authority mentality, and either formation of a society where the gender-change surgery is a right-of-passage and the population is sustained by bringing in outsiders or a complete and total rejection of the vault and the history it contains upon opening.

Another possible variation is where the above-16 subjects are isolated upon entering the vault and after surgery are told that they were the only ones to recieve the surgery for some random reason and that they were routed to a different vault than the one that everyone else was sent to (so they don't ask questions about where their friends/family went), and that if they don't conform to their new identy the population of the vault might treat them like an outcast. In this scenario, doing the operation to vault-dwellers after they have already been brought in (when they age to 17) would be too difficult to cover up. More intelligent (and paranoid) vault dwellers would note that everytime someone turns 17, they vanish and suddenly a 17-year-old of the opposite gender appears in the vault, leading to them spreading the truth (and contaminating the experiment). Because of this, such a process would not occur in those vaults. These vaults would open in 20 years.

The above vaults would create a test similar to the other one mentioned, except it would test an individual's willingness to accept a new identity in a situation where they believe they are the only one that is different. Possible results: paranoia, mental breakdowns, anti-authority conspiracy, discovery of experiment (unlikely), and either violent rebellion or submission to gender standards.

Not Bad. DO you mind if i intergrate something like that into my shapeshifting vaults?

Why not at all (although I already posted it, so it's not like it's going to add anything to the discussion if you put it in there). In fact, it would probably be better if you didn't add it to your ideas.

Man, I'm glad I started this thread, some really creative stuff out here. Excellent job from most everyone!

Also, I'm doing kind of my own Vault experiment with it. Many of you, when placed in a position of god-like, designer-level power, use the opportunity to test religion, self-image, sexual/societal norms, while a few of you simply seem interested in causing pain and/or torturing the Vault inhabitants placed under your supervision.

Very interesting.

Please, continue....

Possible in canon: Only include people with highly antisocial lifestyles. They would be put in a vault that had broken equipment and limited supplies.
HAH! That's great. I think that's right along the lines of one they'ed actually do.

My idea:
A vault where nobody possesses the skills to fix anything and everything is scheduled to begin breaking in 18 months.

This is the vault template I use in every custom/original Fallout setting I join:

Vault 52 - Vault is left "unfinished"; the majority of the vault is fully assembled, but there is a wing of the vault which consists of empty caverns with vault constructing materials. There is enough construction material to considerably expand the vault, but not enough to fully develop the remaining caverns. Experiment goal is to see whether they'd seal themselves up or if they'd try to seek additional materials from outside, and if so, how they would obtain them.

Vault 89 a normal vault... Except the entire police force would be run by conservatives, and the entire army run by liberals... It could yield interesting results.
Wait that's US Airforce and NYPD now! ;)...

Anyway my vault idea is Everyone inside the vault is considered to be part of the military, from early childhood trained to become a soldier/airman/seaman and receive vr training as to battle the surviving Chinese forces.

Vault 2030 is designed to hold 500 people for 300 years. It is given extra guns including a small fleet of armored cars, a G.E.C.K, all the required utilities, and is built to be massive. Three times the size of a normal Vault massive (Example: hallways must be at least 25 feet wide.)

The kicker? After 30 years, once everyone has gotten to know ALMOST everyone else, a mutagen will be released that randomly infects people and slowly turns them into furries. The mutagen also causes them to start having some animal characteristics. There is also a stash of the mutagen hidden in the Vault that could be used to infect half the United States.

The intent? To see if the non-mutants can get along with the other mutants or will it devolve into a vault destroying war with:
A. The furries winning and making a furry vault. They then leave and create a city like Vault City.
B. The furries winning and using the G.E.C.K to create an army, conquering the wasteland.
C. A but the humans winning.
Very interesting. In my opinion, A is probably the one I would go for, especially if I'm part of the winning team XD

ok, i read a whole bunch of ideas and a bunch are really cool. i have a sickening feeling this idea has already been used but i don't feel like checking.

in this vault, every person is kept in one room with machines taking care of their every need. they have all the food, water and air they need to survive. they cannot leave.

in each room there is a terminal that is connected to an intranet that the whole vault shares. they are allowed to choose one screen-name (they will be taught to read and write and stuff through teacher machines) and if they change it the the whole vault will be notified.
they are allowed to access a few different websites, such as a facebook/twitter thing where they can post updates to things they want to do, can learn about other screen-names (as the denizens won't be given names. the screen-name is all they have), a large assortment of games that are all either mmo's or have some sort of competitive nature, like highscores and such.
there will be a chat site where there is a sort of common room where they all can chat, and each user can set up their own room (password protected or not) and can have private chat with one other person.
when they turn 13 they will be allowed to choose one other person to be in the same room with, to have a fist fight, to just talk, whatever. they can choose whoever they want, as long as the other person accepts. when they turn eighteen they will be permitted to have sex during these meetings, if they so choose. any conceived child is taken and given his/her's own room the instant of birth.

i prophesies we will get some epic fanboys over some certain game or another, and cybering will be extremely popular. i also predict that there might be a vast hierarchy of chatrooms concerning different topics, perhaps one especially for figuring out what to do during the meetings.
