Type 2, just don't be fat.
Not everyone who gets type 2 is "fat," though it is much more common statistically for overweight and obese people to develop diabetes. My grandmother has always been stick thin (to the point where I'm always afraid I'm going to crush her if I hug her too hard) and she still developed type 2.
Yeah...that idea that only fat people get it made me upset...especially when it got tons of focus because fat people started to get more and more common, and thus type II got more and more common...bleh.
Random aside: my grandfather just got type II a couple of years ago, and he's in good shape.

Yeah, it irritates me when people say type 2 only comes from being overweight. A lot of it has to do with a person's genes, not only what they eat. I have a history of diabetes on both sides of my family and am currently borderline type 2 myself. I'm trying to reverse it but it's not an easy process.

I'm sorry about your grandfather; it's always hard seeing a family member deal with medical problems, especially ones that aren't curable.

I'm not too worried about him, to be honest. He's already beaten cancer, so I'm pretty sure he'll be able to manage this well enough.
I've never heard about "reversing type II"...can you elaborate on that?

Full-blown type 2 can't truly be reversed, but I'm only borderline - my numbers are close to diabetic, but not quite there yet. Meaning that unless I take very, very good care of myself I will soon have actual diabetes. Once a person has type 2, I don't think it's possible to get rid of. I know my grandmother brought her numbers down at least 5 points and is now able to manage her diabetes quite well, but she told me that she'll never be able to be fully "normal" again.

Gotcha. I know it's a pain in the ass[sup]3[/sup] having to worry about so much crap that you ignored before...best of luck to you, though.

ya know, i dont find it that hard to deal with, granted im not having to take shots and such, but periodic tests and simply watching what you stuff into your gut isnt all THAT hard. especialy in my case, my diet was horrible i was taking in about 4000 calories a day in sugar from soda, a switch to diet soda i credit with a huge difference in numbers alone.

there was one other factor that may (or may not) hve had to do with this but it seems certian medications can effect your sugar levels. in fact there is a medication im on called seroquil (no im not crazy my doc used it as a sleap aid for me) that is linked to serious diabetic risk. i was on this med for 5 or 6 years before i became diabetic. as in i was still taking the meds last summer.

http://injury-law.freeadvice.com/drug-toxic_chemicals/seroquel-side-effects.htm

i just linked that sight because it was top of the google search on it. if your taking medications such as this and have suddenmy become diabetic its worth checking into. my shrink that proscribed seroquil was actualy the one to tell me about this when he found out i was diabetic. seems its actualy a pretty big deal and was a true case of the drug company that makes it trying to actualy cover up this side effect. in other words they knew this drug would fuck people up and tryed to hide it on purpose.

and from waht i know it wasnt just a case of 'the data wasnt clear' but a case of its totaly certian that this drug can cause lots of problems but they tryed too hide the results from the FDA.

now im generaly not the kind of person to blame others for my troubles, i was over weight for most of my life and my diet was horrible, plus i have a family history of diabetes so im not actualy inclined to jump on the 'lets sue the fuckers' bandwaggon, i only post this now because there may be some people who WERENT at risk through their normal living situation that were a victim of this kind of thing.

and one last thing, i would encourage you to talk with your doctor about what meds your taking and what effect if any they may have on your dibetic situation. turns out there is a fair number of common meds that effect your blood sugar levels, and given my lack of faith in the medical system generaly it never hurts to take an active part all on your own and dont just assume that your doctor knows everything about everything.

your a 20 minuts TOPS medical visit in an otherwise busy day for them, but its YOUR life we are talking about here. when they go home at the end of the day THEY arent the ones that have to deal with the results if they are wrong, YOU are.

and rember, THEY work for YOU, not the other way around as it can some times seem.

Sorry, i didn't mean to offend anyone about the overweight thing, It is got my mostly overweight people, but type 2 can be caused by dodgy genes or diets.

Wait, so a red critter, behind a pink stop sign, holding a pink !, is like a diabetic attack.

As previously stated.

WHAT THE DEUCE?

And yes, ill take a crate neon
Okay, it'll probably take about a week to get there, it'll probably smell pretty bad (I do need to put in a hunk of meat to feed them on the trip), and I highly advise you let them out slowly. And at about 7pm, so it's dark enough that they don't freak, but you can still see them easily enough. And if any neighborhood kids go missing, play innocent!

Ohhhh...okay. That post left me feeling very confused. In that case, the same details apply.

Hi and welcome. I like the thread name. Will there be a Diabetes: The motion picture as well?? :p
That would be awesome!! But in all seriousness, I have type 2, and the worst for me is as soon as anyone finds out, they become my mother. I work in a high-volume kitchen, and have to taste things all day long. Invariably, I'll reach for a cookie, or put sugar into something because the recipe calls for it, and people just go monkeycrap on me. "Are you sure you can have that? Won't that mess you up?" I know what I'm doing people.

Eeesh. How have you not strangled somebody by now? I know I would have...
"Hey, don't eat that fry!"
*Guttural growl*
"It'll really mess you up!"
*something in my head snaps*
"I'll show you messed up!"

...or something like that.

Rumor is, thanks to stem cell research, they've successfully induced the pancreas' (not sure if that'd be the correct pluralization) of diabetic lab rats into producing insulin again, thus technically curing Type 1 Diabetes. Of course they want to do more study and blah blah blah. But its almost time to think of it as a thing of the past.

THANK YOU! I've only met two people like you in my entire diabetic life! You win a prize.

What worries me is the probability of one of the diabetic supply companies holding it up because they depend so heavily on diabetics buying their stuff. While I would kind of regret Medtronic going away because they've made some great products(pumps for the win!), I would prefer to have a cure than a treatment.
Oh, and as for the people who protest stem cell research: I want to kick all of them in the face...or just have them live a month with diabetes or some other disease that could be cured by stem cell research. Then we'll see how they feel.
