Final Fantasy XI: Absolute Virtue. Game developer dickery at its best.
Ahahaha. So true. A few have been able to beat AV, though. But I still don't know if anyone has beat the Pandemonium Warden, especially after the 2 hour despawn timer.

What I love the most is that when SE put the despawn timer onto those mobs, all they told the community was "You're just doing it wrong, morons. It's not that hard." I find that quite funny. I mean, in a gaming world where difficulty curves are getting lower and bosses are getting easier, it's nice to see someone sticking to the "They'll figure it out eventually" theory of gameplay.
The XI playerbase has figured out how to kill both AV and PW. In fact we figured out PW before AV.

Awaiting next unstoppable force of destruction please!
How about raising the level crap after, what, ten years? All of the characters I had maxed out became more or less worthless and I was just casually playing. I don't have time for end game or getting any the new items really. That was the thing that ironically got me to quit.

Infamous. The part where you have to choose whether to save Trish or six doctors. You take the "good" route and save the doctors and Trish falls to her death.

You take the "evil" route and try to save Trish, only its not her, she is on the other building and she still falls to her death.

Fuck you game. Fuck you.

Should've stuck around a few months after the cap was increased. Abyssea streamlined the XP grinding process, and generally made endgame approachable by even casual players. A change for the better most would say. But rather than derail this thread into XI discussion, send me a PM if you want more details. for now, I'm goin to bed.

Bad Company 2: They had the wonderful idea of forcing you to level up your character several items before giving you the class-features you ought to have in the first place.

A reasonable dick move was a recent L4D2 mutation called Lone Gunman. No special infected except boomers, and only a magnum. That would have been fine if they hadn't jacked up the infected damage.
On expert, one hit from a zombie did 100 damage. What. The. Hell. Valve?
Valve had all but admitted the L4D2 mutations are experimental, but the recent Lone Gunman release was a replay, and I was surprised they hadn't lessened the common damage.

My solution was to not play it. Last Man on Earth was much better.

The dick move I recently discovered: Enforced linear play of Raven Sofware's Singularity. There are no saves and no chapter selection. None. The only way you get to replay a given chapter is by playing to that chapter from the beginning. Thanks Raven.

Worse yet, save points are frequently unannounced, and it frequently locks and bars the door behind you. Thanks Raven.

Then, the game is rife with secrets, extra boosts and sometimes story elements that are out of the way, so you want to be able to backtrack. You want to be able to thoroughly investigate an area, and then the door you passed through abruptly closes and locks. Thanks Raven.

I think unskippable cutscenes to be a dickmove...
But furthermore...can't think of much really.

Wait! MW2 for needing the grenade launcher to unlock the shotgun attachment!
If they even had half a brain, you would switch that!

The railroading in Fable 2. I didn't realise it while I was playing, but got very angry retroactively after reading this [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=2105] very interesting series.
It's the classic tabletop gaming trope: The entire game is just the author wanking off as he pits his Ultimate Evil Guy against His Ultimate Awesome Weapon. You win not because you were brave, strong, or resourceful, but because you did what you were told. The artifact did all the winning for you. [...]

Whatever you do, do not waste time listening to what [the final boss] says, hoping that some logic will emerge from this wreck of a character. If you take too long, Reaver will kill-steal the final boss from you and no that is not a joke.
Again, I did not notice this when I first played Fable 2. I did notice, however, that my character became covered in shiny blue lines for no reason. Because I wanted by character to be a sexy gunslinger, I did consider that a dick move.

Already been said but fallout 3 pissed me off.
It?s a sandbox, explore for the sake of exploring kind a game and you can?t play past the end of the main quest even if you survive it? And you for some reason have to go in yourself or seen Lyons in even tho there are companions who are completely immune to radiation. Granted it seems they realised this and created broken steal to fix it so I don?t have to leave that quest unfinished (which annoys the hell out of me).

For me it's the beginning of Fallout 2. Absolutely no warning that you won't be given a gun at the beginning, so if you haven't made a melee or fist fighting character, the first parts of the game will be excrutiatingly frustrating.

Petty complaint, but Auto Saves in the Halo franchise. Blast through a pair of hunters, knock over some heavy vehicles, and get detonated by an errant grunt - suddenly back a half hour earlier.
Just one more reason I love Halo 2 and no others. Halo 2 had a very forgiving checkpoint system, meaning you could risk those over-the-top stunts and only get knocked back a couple minutes at most.

Not 100% sure on this, but it seemed like if you managed to stay out of fire for about 5-10 secs it autosaved, so you would have mid fight checkpoints. Very handy for those extended firefights.

Solomon's keep for iphone. You play as a weak mage, and sometimes the developer will lock your character in a room full of baddies that will ass rape you unless you teleport out and in over again. Are they encouraging exploitation of the game or what?

If you have 9-10 agility (which you should, if you are playing Fallout 2, especially as a gun character), then you have enough AP to punch once then run outside of the radscorpion and ant's ranges. It might take a while, but you can effectively kite every enemy in the Temple of Trials this way.

Now, if you have middling intelligence, getting past the guard at the end is a bit trickier, but hey. Thats what save scumming is for.

Killing Floor's specimen spawn spots. Specimen spawn where you aren't looking, even if that spot is literally right on your ass, or around the next corner.

Yes, but we shouldn't have to do those things (especially save-scumming). Though I suppose you are right about the kiting thing. Although what happens when you have to fight Geckos? Or enemies with guns?
