ZOMG CONSPIRACY!!!!!
iono, thats just th3 way th3 cooki3 crumbl3s.

=D

As for noticing the 'pattern' that most games this year have a 3 in them, that is just a psychological thing our brains do.
We look for patterns, where there is no pattern, because our brain wants there to be a pattern.
I cannot remember the technical name for this, and can't remember the keywords to google the image of a "face" on one of the moons of (Jupiter I think?) so until someone does, you'll all just have to take my word on it =)

There was also a case in the states where a roulette wheel landed on (I think it was black) 20+ times in a row, and people kept betting more and more on red, thinking it was going to be red because of how many times it was black.
Pretty sure this is a different thing, but is also relevant.

Probably a side effect of the time we've spent in the current console generation. Pretty much every example in the OP had its first installment as an early hit on the 360 or PS3, some being launch titles. And with sequels coming out every 18 months to 2 years or so, we're getting to the third installments of these series, having been in the 7th console generation for just over 5 years.

It is actually just random chance that the third game in so many series is all coming out this year. Currently making new titles is a pretty big risk, so game companies are trying to stick to what actually sells. There are tons of other games some fairly big coming out this year that are new or not the third in a series your just not looking.

Last year it was the twos. I guess it only makes sense for it to be threes this year...

Me, I'm hoping for ones next year. Let's see some new blood, companies!
What game is that?

Well... its 2011, no, wait, that only equals 4. But if you take 2+1-1... no, thats just two. Oh, wait, I know! 2+1*1= 3. Obviously.

Honestly though, it just means companies dont want to take the chance on new things so much as they want to do that trilogy thing thats so popular nowadays (Halo, GoW (Gears and God), um... I think ME3 is supposed to be the last one).

I'm really only excited for one 3, and thats battlefront 3. The only other big number on my radar is 5. As in PERSONA 5!

Whats your 5?
Elder Scrolls 5, I assume.

Jesus. Starting to sound like Madden. A new one every year with only slight upgrades to the predecessor.
... Sounds about right.

I think Modern Warfare is alright, but I wish people would stop dishing out 60$ every time they release it with a slightly longer title.

IS there any big game comming out that isn't a sequel?
No, because people don't get as easily hyped about new IPs. Big games are almost always sequels because a sequel has already delivered something, whereas a new property is really nothing more than the developer's possibly empty promises. Sequels represent something real, and that's what creates hype - the idea of an improved version of a product already known to be good.

Nope, it's a 1. Also, if you are going by the logic I assume, then it's a 3.
Shadow of the colossus was a (distant) prequel to ico.

DoW2 is a few years old...So...Yeah...

I'm okay with 3rd iterations of the series, they just have to make it good. I judge games on their own merit, usually, not on which iteration of a series they are (I say usually because there are many times where one of the games turns me off from later games in the series).

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, I guess...

Also, I did notice that. Certainly not complaining.

EDIT: Wait, since when has MW3 been confirmed for this year....Or at all?

I don't care for sequels because they generally do not push innovation. Typically they just update graphics and add a few new gameplay mechanics.

Example:

CoD 4: Modern Warfare was an innovative FPS title that set the standard for FPS multiplayer. But World at War, MW2, and Black Ops did not push the envelope at all - almost all of those games are just reskins of one another with negligible improvements and changes.

In 2011, I'm really only looking forward to L.A. Noire and Red Orchestra 2 (despite being a sequel, this game actually has many innovative features not found in other FPS games).

Not really. The games I'm thinking about this year are Pokemon Black and Wite, Portal 2, Crysis 2 Batman Arkham City, and Dissidia 012.

Sorry I didn't type out Retribution, didn't think it would be nit-picked that much.

How is Ico related to Shadow of the Colossus?
