it really depends on the person im half black and i almost never pick the black character (i usually pick the cutest girl) my brother on the other hand only picks black characters in fact he was pissed that the darkest you can make your character in DA2 is little more than a good tan

Watching you white folks wringing over your racial insecurity is so entertaining! ^_^

I, on the other hand, get away with saying "Y'all look alike!", to both you white and black people.

OT: Being an Asian around the Equator, I choose... whatever the hell looks good. Scottish dwarves are my favorite!

I'm incredibly white but I always make myself just ever-so-slightly tanned, when I have the choice that is.

I usually play as a white/asian female because those are the 2 races I find most attractive. Not to say that a black women can't be attractive. I just prefer whatever my penis prefers.

I thought penises were colorblind.

I would borrow Yahtzee's words here: "Who you are in a game is not who you are in real life". I understand the view of customizing the charachter to look 95% like you and spending hours on that but sometimes it's nice to create a totally new "persona". For me, it depends on the game. For example in Saints Row 2 I chose to play as a british-accented african american male. Made him resemble the butler from The Fresh Prince. It was funny and it fit the game, in fact made the cutscenes better and made the experience more personal. In some other game, I might go with a copy of myself(yes, a white male), but again it totally depends on the situation and the type of game environment. I think it's about the gamer's own personal preferences and his imagination and the experience he is after in the game, not his race.
OT: This is my first post here and I am not a native speaker, so I apologize if my grammar is not accurate. :)

All of the "OMG RACIST!!" comments are saddening. I hope those are just attention whoring, or else political correctness on the forum is even worse then I thought.

EDIT: To the OP: I have never cared, but it would indeed be interesting to know just the same.
LOOK LOOK! I'm whoring attention! There are no "GUH DIS IS RACIEST HAW HAW" comments. There's just other attention whores trying to get a bandwagon rolling by making out that race doesn't matter.

thats borederline racist...
Yea, pretty much. I don't know how the fuck you managed to gather that blacks are "bad ass". There's nothing special about blacks...sure, we can grow afros and use the word mutha-fucka as punctuation (sorry Yahtzee), but -oohhh, wait, sorry.
Erm, yea, i don't know why you think blacks are "bad ass", but i'd imagine it stems from some kind of stereotype. Oh well...
I play a guy who looks as similar to me as possible, so usually mid way between the BLACK and WHITE sliders so i look like a hob-nob dunked a little too long in someone's tea. Oh, and with a bigger afro, a proper mouth-beard and bigger muscles, of course...

Saints Row 2 doesn't have a British accent!! It's a poorly done Australian accent by an American actor who probably thinks it's British. I'd imagine Volition left it in for the sheer ridiculousness. Makes me piss myself whenever he says "SAINTS OWN THIS TOWN" or anything remotely serious.

Well, whatever it was, it was over-the-top funny and I am happy they left it in the game. :) The cutscenes and some of the things the character said made me laugh so hard, at one point I had to pause the game and catch a breath.

There are two ways to play games when your personality is involved. You can play as yourself, taking in the circumstances of the game, or you can make a personality different from yourself to reflect the circumstances in a way you yourself normally woundn't.

Pick your poison.

EDIT: As for myself, being a black gamer, also seeing this as a trivial matter, I slide through different 'races' as I go through games.

Though, what does come to mind is that 'race' isn't always a selection, or rather its usually a facial/skin template; usually games will give you more options to tweak your character's body type.

Hey if a girl wants to do it and she wants me to wear a costume, I'm okay with that. If she wants to wear the costume im okay with that too.

I hate costumes. What I meant was that I'm a furry. You must have heard of furries :p

Being a quarter white, chinese and half black most character generators can't handle me being a paragon of racial unity. So I usually play black people.

Its not being racist, its an actual question that I've wondered myself. I've mainly thought of it in terms of books though.
I Am Legend did this to me. Years of thinking of Neville as a white guy and then suddenly I get Will Smith? It made my brain hurt.
