I want to see a dark pokemon game where YOUR pokemon can die if you dont take care of them, so i guess its monster rancher, which would still be badass.

OT: um yea, go look up the topic "Gary Oak was a good guy"

Which is exactly why when you go into Lavender Tower and talk to the little girl, she's crying over her dead growlithe. And why you fight the ghost of a dead marowak (who is explicitly mentioned as having been killed by Team Rocket).

NEVER LINK TO TVTropes.
Sorry, I had to :(.

I've just spent the last 2 hours enthralled by it, and I couldn't stop myself from the link.

They turn into Ghost Pokemon?

Also, If a Charmaders(or its evolutions) fire goes out on its tail, it dies. I think.

There have actually been some fan-speculation that pokemon have an inborn want to battle, but in the wild they have to plan everything themselves as well as keeping healthy enough to feel up for it, whereas being tamed by a trainer provides them with a constant source of shelter, food, and social needs taken care of, as well as having half the weight of a battle being taken off their shoulders and they dont have that nagging worry of the winner diving in to eat out their tasty vital organs.

/edit - and yes. I think they die. AND GET EATEN. it makes me lol. it's only the prey-ones anyhow, like tauros and fish-types.

It's never shown that Pokémon die, but I imagine they probably do age similar to humans (with the exception of the super-special-awesome ones that are from another dimension or whatever), but I expect the meat you mentioned comes from regular animals like the ones we have here as opposed to Pokémon. Although, it is unlikely that Nintendo and whoever else who's involved in making Pokémon really bothered to think it through so much when they're probably never going to confront it since the show is aimed at children and the having deaths of Pokémon in the game would not only have the same problems with showing death with children in the show but would also have the extra factor of all the adult players thinking it's quite a dick move having their high-levelled Pokémon, well, die.

I would have thought Pokemon Graveyards and Fossils of Deceased Pokemon (Kabuto, Omanyte) from Blue and Red were enough to answer this

Yes. All of them. Especially Pikachu. Tell your kids.
Your comment made me lol in the computer lab. You're my hero.

OT: Imagine an Onix using tackle on, say, caterpie. That bug would be smeared all over the floor...

I guess they die, and you can eat them as well. I mean, Tailow's description says it hunts Wurmples. Also, the fact that there are fossils explains a lot.
They're supposed to be extinct, but noone raises an eyebrow when someone uses them. How od...

Well, there is a cemetery for dead pokemon, so I assume they can die. Otherwise they've just buried lots of fainted pokemon in a cemetery and just left them there. Which would be moderately amusing.

I say yes, yes they do.

lol... Pokemon Special...

Also, the pokédex entry for Cubone, for instance, explicity says that the skull it wears is that of its dead mother (as mentioned before)

So yeah, dead Pokémon.

Someone really needs to make a Pokémon zombie movie... that would be awesome.

They only "faint" in the American versions, as far as I know... I seem to remember learning (somewhere...) that in the Japanese versions, when you fight wild Pokemon, it says they die, which makes sooo much more sense as to why I can't catch the fainted ones when I know it's the fact they're actually dying...
So, yes, they die... as long as you're in Japan. But in America, Pokemon are immortal and live through thousands of beatings. In fact, I'm sure you're actually fighting the same exact pidgey over and over again, it just wakes up and follows you to fight again...

Isn't that what Lavender Town is basically for? So yeah, they die eventually but it's never been explained how.

Ok, I do know it's been like... 8 years since I last watched the series on TV... And yeah, I played most of the games, up till the one for Game-cube (which I played for about an hour, got bored and then never again).
But since Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, my mind has been wandering over this stupid thing...

Do Pokemon actually die?

I'm not sure...
I mean, I take it they can die, if you don't rush them to the nearest pokecentre or spray them with a potion or something... I remember Pikachu (I guess...) being dangerously ill in the series at one time... But they never actually died, did they?

So if Pokemon can't die... how come some of them are rare? The basic thought is that if they don't die, they keep reproducing (unless they're the last of their kind (Zapdos, Moltress, Lugia etc.)... Which means they must be hundreds of years old... And then still, the basic rule is: If there's one, there's more, and if there are more you're bound to find one... Anyway, drifting off....)
And then there's the fact that there are quite obviously carnivorous pokemon (think Gyarados, Charizard, Persian...), though we never in the series see one pokemon look at the other as if thinking: "Dinner time!"... Not even wild pokemon...

Ok, I get that it's a kids series and that the creators really didn't want the kids to be confronted with death, but when you're older and you watch it (guilty!) you start to see things that are... a bit weird...
Think of this: we often see our heroes eat something like meatballs (sorry, I'm not that familiar with Japanse dining culture...), but where in the name of Professor Oak did the meat come from? It is definitely meat, I think, again, someone in the series once commenting on it...
Are they eating the very pokemon they love? It seems like there's really no other option... There are no 'normal' animals in the world of pokemon... If they eat fish, they could actually be eating Magikarp (Though, and I do remember this for sure!(well, almost), pokedex says about Magikarp that it's inedible due to it's though scales and it's bony structure... or something...)... And then I get thoughts of Magikarp evolving into Gyarados in a restaurant kitchen...

Anyways, what do you think? Ever thought about it? Does it really matter?
Yes that is why they have Lavender Tower which is a Pokemon graveyard. Also just because you only find one in a game that has no gender does not mean there is only 1 it is to stop you using ditto. They do eat pokemon Farfethc'd is nearly extinct because people eat pokemon so yes they do die and get eaten. The reason you never see pokemon die in the show is because it is a children's program and it will 'ruin' tehir innocence if they see death or something.

Edit: Pokemon can die of anything from drowning to disease to getting killed in a fight although some pokemon like Charmander and its evolutions die if the fire on its tail goes out.

They can die but it involves mowing the lawn. Just continue using cut to get rid of the tall grass, eventually you'll be unable to find any pokemon in the area until you leave and they repopulate.

Yes, kind of like how Super Effective joked, except playing the games revealed it to be true.

I'm pretty sure that they do die of old age, but that they don't usually die from the attacks of other pokemon. This, of course, is the silliest part of the series, given how powerful some of these attacks are. I guess that, at least when being controlled by a trainer, most pokemon just don't go for the deathblow.

Also, it seems to me that pokemon aren't necessarily rare. Not with how high the random-encounter rate likes to get sometimes.
