Do we want realistic graphics?

I'd prefer a game that was fun to one that was realistic.

I don't see much point in perfecting graphics if I can't collect musical notes, puzzle pieces and charming little colored animals named Jinjos.

Games are sacrificing AI, gameplay, storyline etc for graphics and tbh its making the games worse. If you want realisitic graphics go outside, join the military etc, I wish they'd stop wasting times and resources on minor graphical changes when the gameplay and storyline is often broken.

games are real enough
my roomate made my girlfried cry when he shot a guinea pig in MGS4 cause it looked so real and not only that but it acted like a real guinea pig and sounded like one too.
so to keep my girlfriend from crying and to prevent my roomies further detachment from reality i say stop here.

For me, the graphics of a game doesn't judge a game. Arma 2 have REALLY good graphics but that doesn't fix any of the bugs >.>

Ah, only if it doesn't significant cut into development time.money. It might now-a-days but as technology gets better it will be easier and easier to make graphics better. It's one thing to go for but the thought of perfect graphics scares me, once the uncanny valley is traversed who's to say what is real? I'm personally fine with last generation graphics though.

A thought popped in my head while looking at Batman: Arkham Asylum. I noticed how god damned near realistic the graphics were. Yet there was something about it that you could TELL was not real. NO, I DON'T WANT THIS TO BE A POLL. My question is should games really strive for realistic graphics? Even games like Drake's Fortune still don't LOOK real, they just get damned close. I personally feel that the reason we play games is the charm of watching millions of pixels emote and talk like humans, all the while knowing that it isn't real. I dunno, I would feel quite bothered to see exact representation of reality in a game.
I noticed that too. There is just something far too... gritty, perhaps? I dunno.

I'm all for realistic graphics, but where appropriate. You know, comic book based games such as Batman and Spiderman I would love to see in a somewhat less realistic visual because it would remain true to the origins of the character. But in games like F.E.A.R and games like that I would like to see more realistic graphics.

May be I'm just picky...

True, but it's still all experimental on a lot of fronts: content-wise, context-wise, performance-wise, standard-wise and market-wise. I'm no developer, but I assume that it's hard to master an aspect, let alone all the aspects that come into making a game, that's constantly being challenged, upgraded and made more complex. Also taking into account the budget, development time, high expectations and so on, releasing a title in such a competitive arena that has cutting-edge graphics, innovative gameplay, intelligent AI, realistic physics, interesting characters, a compelling story, satisfying DLC etc...is no small task.

I don't know of many games that have accomplished all of the above, even those 'games of the year' have sacrificed (or simplified) one thing for another. If a company manages to accomplish the majority of what is expected these days, but there are one or two aspects that were not as responsive as other games (which were sacrificed to make better,) then people will complain about it. Once the standard has been set, then other things that were overlooked, or not a priority or whatever, will become the main selling point. I think it'll be awhile yet for that to happen since technology is always evolving and gamers are becoming more demanding.

...this thread looks familiar but anyway realism is good but I think the fun of certain games is not the total immersion including graphic realism but rather the escape from reality I think it may be good for some games but others graphic realism would ruin it and i'm talking about games from all genre's not just fps or rpg

I'd like to see games get to the level of graphics that CGI in movies has now achieved. Personally I think making things as realistic as possible (graphics wise) is a very positive goal, as it would add to immersion and overall enjoyment.

Once it gets to the point where the human eye cannot differentiate between the graphics and real life, games will have high enough resolution and good enough effects that graphics will not have to change from there on. Obviously achieving this also requires developments in display technology, but TV's can already display higher resolution pictures than games produce (although some try to achieve proper 1080p).

I think the points you are making about realism not being fun or being too close to real life are more related to game play aspects, not the actual graphics. You can still have an unrealistic game with realistic graphics?

I don't think realistic graphics are all that important. Sure, as years pass and average computing efficiency of consoles and PCs goes up, I expect the graphical level to also improve.

But graphics should never come at the cost of gameplay, engaging story or the fun-factor. Good games can be made with bad graphics, but good graphics can't turn a bad game into good.

And when we achieve the point where realistic graphics actually are possible, I expect many game developers won't use them. There is freedom in symbology, 'unnatural' color pallets and expressionistic styles. Some games flat out require non-real graphics (such as Discworld games or games based on anime etc) in order to properly convey the game world.

I myself use video games as an escape of sorts. So to answer the question, no. I like bright, happy colors, cartoonish characters, and over-the-top action. I don't have a current gen console. Just my trusty N64 and PS2. Love Okami's graphics.

Sometimes, yes. They're nice to have, when needed. Though realistic games only get so far with me--I like a bit of unbelievable, something that requires a bit of suspended disbelief, something that forces me to imagine, but still manages portrayal of what it's trying to point out.

it would be cool, and fun in some things, but it will go from a game being a fuckup, to being a really pretty fuckup

graphics are cool, and they help a game, but they dont MAKE the game

No not really. I play games to escape my crappy reality. I don't want to be reminded of it's crappyness. That's why I love games in a Sci-Fi setting.

Not real exactly, I just want the world (be it sci fi, spaceships and the like) to look as good as nice as possible, perhaps not realistic as spaceships and aliens don't exactly exist in our reality. As long as it looks relatively good it adds enjoyment to the game.

At this stage realistic graphics are pretty commonplace, which is why many games are going for a more stylised look, which deferentiates them rather than the industry going a 'greatest graphics' arms race a couple years back. Unfortunately most games go for the commonplace greyish brown, but there's a few gems I've enjoyed.

In truth I don't see true photo realism as that much of a big thing, you just get better textures where you're closer to things. Better to give the extra graphical power to extra content or more expasive environments.
