I only tend to look at it if they're being unreasonably douchey to people. If I find they've been infracted multiple times, I can safely ignore the conversation knowing they're just itching for it.

i didn't even know there was one, but apparently i'm on probation, it's crazy how much trouble the occasional 'your mum' joke can get you into around here.

No, I rarely look at other people's forum health meters. Personally I think the whole forum health meter thing is retarded. Not the concept itself, but the fact that the meter never goes down. That coupled with the fact that this forum is run somewhat akin to Nazi Germany minus the genocide leaves me feeling like I'm walking on eggshells filled with broken glass every time I come here.
I disagree about the place being run like "Nazi Germany minus Genocide". The mods usually stay out of the way most part here and we at least get to say "Goddamn motherfucking shit fucker" without incurring wrath as long as it's not directed towards anyone. At least the mods here don't threaten to ban you and afterwards send you an EMAIL saying "SEE, I TOLD YOU SO" (umm, harassment?) and then the admins say they are NOT overstepping their boundaries! And yes, that ACTUALLY happened on a big forum (not here, though).

However, I DO agree that the meter should go down after a period of time, depending on the crime. Like, a week for low content and so on, except for trolling, harrasment and moderator insulting. Yeah, currently, it's like we all clocks, ticking down until we all get banned.

EDIT: Wait, just saw a reply above saying they do. Nevermind.
I was referring to the fact that we're not allowed to talk about certain legal software and/or browser plug-ins that shall tactfully remain unnamed.

I don't normally look at people's profiles, but...
If I see someone post something stupid/inflammatory, a quick look at their health meter might cause me to write them off as morons not worth my time.

What bothers me is how often I see people whine about the health bar not going down over time though. It does! It says so right there in the code of conduct.
No wonder you have problems with probations when you clearly haven't bothered to read the forum rules.

In a way i do.
If, let's say they have got a lot of warnings/ moderator wrath in a short period of time (let's say if you're on the red and still under 100 posts) then i know they won't last long.

However, if they've got a few (2-4) warnings over a 1000 post count, then i know that they're usually good people.

Hell, i've got 2 warnings and one of them i got for a reason which i didn't even know existed!
The other one was for a mis-understanding.
I once got a low-content post for a mistype. I accidentally wrote my comment in the quote box, so I got reported.
Such situations are what the appeal system is for.
The mods can't be perfect, so it's up to the users to point it out when they make mistakes, and undo said mistakes.
[HEADING=3]Appeal System[/HEADING]
Moderators and staff are human and sometimes make mistakes. For this reason, we have an appeal system that members can utilize to plead their case in hopes of a reversal of a penalty. Once you have received a penalty, a message will be sent to you via private message. At this time, there is also a link to the appeal process. Please note, the appeal process works with your email account, not the private message system on The Escapist. If you choose to use the appeal system, please make sure to check your spam folder for an email.

All appeals are normally seen within 48 hours of your appeal, except on weekends.
Just don't get angry at the mods for not being infallible.
Besides. It's just a warning. It doesn't affect you in any way, other than marking that one post you made as being of an undesireable nature.

I don't even look at infraction meters, I had forgot about them until I read the thread title, haha. So no I don't.
Wow. The first two posters on this topic have the same birthday! :-O What are the chances?
1/365, since you ask.
I think it would be more like 1/730. But then leap-year would change the odds as well, so... wait, who cares?

OT: No, I never look at peoples profiles. I am too busy looking at posts.
Negative. The first poster has a birthday, whatever it is the second poster has a 1/365 of matching discounting leap years

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Given how ban crazy the mods get sometimes Im surprised when I see someone with over 1k posts with full health, really it seems like its just a matter of time till your banned from this forum, the stupid health meter really needs to regen quicker or something... if it regens at all.

I usually never even look at the infraction meter. It's not something I care about. If you are posting naughty things, then the only thing I need to do is click the report button and let the mods take over from there. I can't think of any reason why I would care about someone's meter.

I actually find that the infraction meter tends to be a signifier of popularity more than anything else. I find people who are highly influential in the escapist community tend to have several infractions. One example is the recent perma-banning of MackHeath (for what i consider to be an extremely petulant reason, i might add. He was banned because he wrote on an article that he didn't care about the subject of the article, hardly ban material when the article itself is up for debate on whether it really belongs in the news section or even on this website at all) and another is the banning of HankMan, for those who remember him. He got heavy infractions for his use of puns on every single article comment and little else.
I remember HankMan, and I have to disagree. The rules are quite clear about low content posts, and if you spend most of your time just making posts that contain a pun that adds nothing to the conversation and nothing else in the post to make it worthwhile, you're going to get banned. Not to mention that you get SEVEN warnings before a ban is administered, so if after seven warnings to post something meaningful instead of just puns he still didn't get it, then he deserves to be removed. And let's look at the post he was banned for. He posted "Yes Really!". That's it. Clearly a low content post, and what do the rules say about low content posts? Not to make them. Seems like a very fair ban to me.

Also, I looked up the post of the other guy you mentioned. It had nothing to do with whether or not an article belonged in the news section of this site; it wasn't even a comment on an article here. It wasn't even a comment about whether or not a subject was newsworthy at all. He was just being rude to a regular member who created a thread about that whole "faster than light particle" thing because he didn't care about what the thread was about.

That's the one thing I like about this site's moderation: they don't hide anything. You can look up what people got banned for most of the time (as long as the thread still exists, usually the posts do too). It's nice for when people start complaining that their own moderations were unfair or when complaining that someone else's ban was unfair, like you did here. We can look and see that the facts of the situation are being skewed, which pretty much everyone tries to do in situations like this (like you just did). It is rather nice to get a link to what they were banned for on every one of their old posts so we can easily see it and go "Yep, that post broke the rules quite clearly, the infraction was certainly justified."

Nope!

I honestly never look at that unless someone brings attention to it, but I normally do judge someone on their comments.

Hm honestly I didn't know that that there as an Infraction Meter. I do usually check out whenever someone was warned/suspended for a post however to see just what they did that made someone angry.

Yeah. I can't help but think people who post 'I don't care':
Firstly, they're wasting everyone's time.
Secondly, they care enough to type a reply.

As for the main topic, no, tho I might let it influence me if the meter was on display under their avatar.

I consider myself to say some pretty dodgy things in my time, I've made some fairly inflammatory, tho not flaming, posts in controversial threads, however, I've got this far without a single warning to my name.

Just think before hitting post, and go back and edit if you think you've maybe overdone something. It's really that simple.

If it's more abuse than wit, go edit.

If it's more a word than a sentence, go edit and avoid low content :)

If it's a reply to an argument, argue against the topic, not just the OP's right to carry on breathing.

Last of all, unless it's relevant to the topic, try not using abusive language. I've used just about every offensive term going, but hopefully within reason and for the big ones, on topic.

EDIT: ooh, only about 500 posts from Neo rank. I admit that'd be nice. I wonder if I'll find people trolling me now, just in attempt to make me break my streak :) (No that's not an invite)

I judge people based upon the content of the post I am reading.

I can be a reactionary, judgemental, asshole at times.. but like others have said, some things you can get banned on on this forum are definitely not the norm for online forums.

I usually don't. I do check most if not all instances where a person has received moderation.

Most of the time, I just don't get why people do things. I understand trolls, because they want to be dicks. I love to see them go up in flames. But the low content posts don't make sense. Why post something if you aren't going to post at least a well thought out sentence of more than eight words?

The ones that make the least sense are the ones where people quote a person and say "This" and that is it.

That just makes me think that the person just wants attention of some kind, saying "look at me, I think like you". It also makes me think the person doesn't have an original thought. I have quoted people many times and said "This", but every time I elaborate with a well thought out paragraph or more.

I really don't see a point in posting unless the post is well thought out, or at least has effort in it. Typing "This" or posting just a picture or just a video(another two things that make no sense) is being lazy.
