Do you buy games based on demos?

For some games you can find demos for them. It previews some of the gameplay for an upcoming or released game and unless something has changed you get them for free. I like to play them whenever bored with my current games and I think it does help me see some games that are worth looking into. Still, they only really show me a sample of what the whole game is like For all I know the demo might have only shown me the best part of the whole game with the rest going down hill, or the whole game could be just a copy of what I just played with only slight changes to the background. While the demo was fun, I might want to do a little more research before buying the actual game.

That is just what I do. I want to know, would any of you ever buy a game based what you saw in a demo?

2 of my purchases so far were made based on my enjoyment of a demo.

Valkyria Chronicles
Mirror's Edge

Those have been great purchases for me.

Not usually, because demos are only a small part of the game.
And if a company makes a demo, I lose respect for them, because of my unfriendly disposition towards demos.

I think the onlly game I ever played a demo for was Batman: Arkham Asylum, and I had pre-ordered it even before I played the demo. So, as a general rule, no, I don't base my purchases on the demos.

Brutal legend.
solely on the demo.

i was let down and let....up? at the same time.
it was still great, just the combat could've been alot better.

and i did not became a rock god!
when you can't tackle a normal mob team by yourselve you're not a god.

so yeah what i wanted was playing the guitar and this happening.

Exactly THAT should've happened.

At times, yes. It really depends on how much fun the demo is, and how much of the gameplay it reveals. A lot of demos out there don't give me enough time to really see if I like the game, or only give me one small slice of a level. They leave me with a "I'm not sure if I liked that or not, but I want to play more."

I remember buying Shadowrun after playing the demo a ton. Lost Planet, Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead also had memorable demos. I liked them because they let you explore, and they made me want to play them multiple times.

Really... I usually lose respect for the publisher (since usually it's the publisher that makes the decision to release a demo, I don't think the developer has much of a say in most cases), for not releasing a demo. I hate it when they expect me to pay a full $50-$60 for a game that I didn't even get to try first. When games don't have demos, unless I really know that I want the game and have been looking forward to it, I usually don't buy it or just end up torrenting it or something, because I don't want to take the risk of paying for something that I don't even like.

Although I think demos work better for multiplayer games generally, because if you had fun on the one or two maps they let you play on, you will probably have fun on the other maps, with the others, and with the other gametypes or whatever. But with single player games, one part of it can be fun, but I've noticed that a lot of single player games are fun at first, but then later on the gameplay starts to get to boring because nothing new is really introduced, and it relies on the same ideas throughout the entire game. It's hard to make a single player game that is captivating from beginning to end, and a lot of demos for single player games don't really show if it pulls it off or not.

Demo's and Gameplay footage, yes.

The key is to make a good demo, that is not bullshit short. The Champions Online Demo, for example, includes:

The Character Creator - Awesome'
The Tutorial Zone - Good!
Nothing else - Whut?

No travel powers? No getting a look at the power tree, or any of the REAL game mechanics/quests? Thats a demo that comes so close to being awesome but then becomes Bullshit. Just make it a timed 14 day up to lvl 20 demo like every other MMORPG, Cockbags.

Agreement on Brutal Legend - Fantastic Experiance, Terrible Game. Needs less RTS Bullshit and more rock superpowers.

The main problem I have with game demos is that it takes time away from the actual game development, and if the demo is full of bugs and other problems, there isn't much time to fix it. A great example of this was Crackdown 2, where I got stuck under the ground for the whole demo.

I do buy games based on demos if the demo shows details of the actual game correctly, for example the Halo Reach Beta. At the same time, I have seem times that the demo was good and the game turned out bad and vise-versa.

Yes, alot, but i also enjoy the little chunk of free gameplay, it usually turns out to be one of the best parts of the game, for free

I rarely find the patience to download a demo, that is the size of one gigabyte, then actually play it for a while and then get the experience ended with a 5 minute commercial. In some occasions, I bother to play the demo, if a game has gotten really mixed reviews and I'm interested in it, I usually give the demo a try.

I usually can't be bothered with a demo. Most of times it's just frustration due to limited content. Reading about a game is enough for me to make a decision, i'll more often just browse plenty of previews, official website and look at some screens/videos.
Another fact is they don't make that much games that would interest me in first place, decent strategies and non hack and slash cRPGs are rare these days.

Yes, although I rarely play them nowadays.

I used to always find demos and play them constantly, but there aren't as many anymore for the games I like.

Multiplayer demos are rare unless they're in the form of a trial period.

I think the only demo that convinced me to buy a game was the Batman one. And that's because it was frigging awesome.
