The Arkham Asylum demo convinced me to buy the game, it had a little bit of everything to give you a good taste of the full game.

Same with 'Splosion Man.

Only once and it was WET - The demo for me hyped up and so excited I pre-ordered the game (I have never done that before or since) and although I enjoyed it, I was disappointed and I will never judge a game on a demo.

Only sort of.

If there is a game that I know I will want from the moment it's been revealed, then no. A demo usually won't change my mind.

If it looks decent but I'm not dying to play it, then I'll play the demo and decide whether or not to pick it up.

Demos are dangerous. I've bought some games based on a demo that I was going to pass on, but I've passed on games because of a demo that I might have eventually bought.

solely on the demo.

i was let down and let....up? at the same time.
it was still great, just the combat could've been alot better.

.
That demo was a lying bastard.

It told us 'Hey! I'm an awesome, set-piece based hack n slash!'

In reality it should have said 'but I turn into a sub-standard RTS after an hour!'

Absolutely. It's probably one of the most likely ways to get me playing a game. If I find myself playing the demo over and over again, I'm quite confident I'll get fun out of the full game. This of course means that the demos have to be more gameplay focused than plot or level focused. For example as good as the Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction demo was, it was too damn short and had no replay value. It's something I'd pick up for under $10, but I just have no confidence it would have extended gameplay value otherwise.

Sometimes I do. If a demo is not available, or just doesn't give me enough to make a judgment, I usually rent it or look at the reviews and then make a decision.

Frequently.

If it wasn't for the demo of Saint's Row 1, I don't know where my life would be at.

That game had a great soundtrack through which I discovered much awesome music. And I'd never had played the sequel, either. Which is my second most played game ever, clocking in at about 500 hours total.

I used to, but now I base my decision on reviews and, if it isn't a game I've been waiting for for a long while, comments on communities I trust.
Then there are games like Civ5 or ME3, which I'll grab without hesitation.

Yeah, i generally do. Sometimes the only good part to the game was the demo, but, overall i don't get disappointed too much.

Sometimes. I'm a sucker for hunting games, and the field and stream demo totally killed any chance of me buying it.

I bought both Folklore and Arkham Asylum based mostly on their demos and enjoyed every minute of them. I always like to be able to check out a demo for a game before buying it, although I also like to check reviews and gameplay footage to make sure the demo is actually representative of the game's content. If nothing else, it allows me to make sure that the controls actually work before I buy something.

Demoes definitely help me decide on a game. Or maybe not. I've been wanting to get Heavy Rain and MGS Peace Walker based on the demoes, but every time I'm at the store I forget to get them.

Isn't the purpose of a demo is to find out whether or not you want to buy it?

I buy games based on the Demo and loving it.

I don't know if that's a simple sarcastic joke or if you are really are trying to enforce your opinion upon that person. I enjoyed the game thoroughly, so will you kindly fix this one too, you selfish sir?
I didn't like the game, but I respected the risk they took trying something different.

It was a total joke, of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.
