I was just wondering this, because although it technically is, I don't really consider it to be. If I was talking to my friends about going on holiday and I said I'm going to Europe (FYI I'm British) then there wouldn't be any confusion. Or we could talk about Europeans, and we would generally assume that to refer to people from what I'll call "mainland Europe", rather than including Brits.
So this is just to find out what everyone else thinks about the matter
If someone in Britain said "I'm going to America" people would generally assume the U.S. if he was going to Brazil, it would still technically be true.

Now, hush. If you don't like the rest of Europe, that's your problem, but you're a part of it.

EDIT: I suppose Canada/Mexico would've been a better example, but whatever. Point is made.

You can't debate geography, it's in Europe. Get over it.
I think he ment the EU, not the continent. Or did you?

Britain is a part of Europe in every sense. They were just assholes the entire time. Well, the Country, not the people. The people are quite nice.

Also, why dosen't your map feature Russia? You know, the biggest country in Europe?
ah and turkey turkey 2 is missing from this map
Geography is not my strongest knowledge, so forgive if I get this wrong. Turkey and Russia are both on the cusp between Europe and Asia and are technically considered Asian and not part of Europe.

As a Brit, we have a very independent mindset from Europe. Stemming from a long history of conflict both political and military. So yes, we are European, in every way except in the minds of the people.

I would imagine the real Europeans feel equally fondly of us.

It's definitely part of Europe. Not a part of mainland Europe, but definitely a part of Europe. Just like Ireland, Iceland, Cyprus, etc.
The UK is a part of the continent known as Europe and it is a part of the European Union.

The UK took interest in Europe for all it's existence. Don't startle if it makes you part of it....

The only reason we like to distance ourselves from the mainland is because we were invaded 3 times from the mainland and are still not over it after so many centuries. Also from the edge of kent, you can see France. I like being part of Europe, Britain is not all its cracked up to be. I have no idea why people are so sentimental (god knows how that words spelt) over a head on a coin :S. I'll stop before i go on a complete rant about annoying British people etc and theres nothing wrong with Europe.

No, because i never actually knew that Britain was part of Europe. I learned it only a year ago.
To me it's basically the same thing as USA and they never talk about Britain in news.

Despite the seperation in landmass, culturally Britain has too much in common with the rest of Europe to be seriously considered as completely seperate. In terms of connection, Russia, which is a part of the European landmass, is further from Europe than Britain culturally because of the differences they have in religion and population. It depends on how you view it.

I think they are merely very close allies.

I think that Britain having it's own separate currency from the rest of Europe gives it a substantial enough difference to be considered separate from Europe.
Most of Europe dosent use the Euro.

And how can you be allied with Europe? Thats like being allied with The Middle East... Or Africa... o_O
Its a bunch of countries lying in an area, called "Europe". And the name of the continent.

Politically (European Union, is even one of the major members)
Geographically (same tectonic plate)
Historically (they've shared kings with France, iirc)
Culturally (language, customs, etc.)
Britain isn't the only European country that has it's own currency (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland)

Yeah, it's a part of Europe.

I've always considered the UK part of Europe.. geographically it's right there, their culture and history is stepped in "European-ness", and for better or worse, that's the community that your country has had to interact with during its existence.

Now I have a serious question for the Brits out there in the audience, because I really don't know. Reading a lot of the comments here, it's obvious there's at least a sub sect of Briton's population that isn't a fan of the EU, that the UK deserves special treatment in it and all of this- where does this sense of entitlement come from? The comments here have read "we are so different culturally, why should we have to change?" but I'm fairly certain France, Spain, Germany, and Italy all of pretty different cultures and people (that's what makes Europe so great right? Relatively small tracks of land containing vastly different cultures). If all of these countries can keep their cultural identity while enacting laws to help the continental/world political and economical scenes, what's UK's claim that they don't think of themselves as part of EU?

Of course Britain is situated IN Europe, and is part of the EU. But it's pedantic to argue along these lines.
It really part of Europe? In other words, do British people see themselves as somehow linked with Europe along lines other than those of trade? No, no way. I wish we Brits felt closer to our Continental pals, but the fact is that we generally don't count ourselves as Europeans. I think teaching foreign languages (mainly Spanish) in British schools would benefit inregration into Europe more, but really there's no quick fix.

Under that logic Japan wouldn't be part of Asia. Puerto Rico wouldn't be apart of the United States.

It's part of the Continent because it's in the same hemisphere.
