Yes. I love the taste of all sorts of drinks... The merriment factor also helps, but I mostly drink for the taste.

But seriously, there are some VERY nice expensive ales and beers you can get that taste exquisite! And moderately priced white wine for fish, red wine for meats, and so on. And don't get me started on more exotic things...

My family was always very open and accepting to a lot of things, I've tried all kinds of beers and ales as a kid thanks to my parents, so alcohol has never been some kind of a taboo in our family. All sorts of wines and beers to accompany various foods, and so on. So I've grown up with access to alcohol although practically never getting drunker then maybe half a beer, or two glasses of wine during fancy holiday dinners. That let me appreciate the taste and differences in various alcoholic beverages, and unlike most teenagers in North America, practically all the time I've spent drinking alcohol was across the table from my parents, in tasteful amounts and good quality, and not at some underage party drinking cheap jack, which tastes about as good as shoving a hot metal rod in your throat. Of course, pretty much all the highly alcoholic beverages have that kind of effect, but there's no comparison between expensive vodka or gin and some cheapest shit a store can sell you.

So yeah, I drink although pretty rarely and in small amounts. And most of those encounters are closer to a gentlemanly dinner then a raging party.

Like I said you're drinking the wrong stuff then. I personally like the taste of firey stuff like single malt scotch's. I think bourbon is too syrupy. I love a good rum blend and a nice voka can be good in small doses. But you can get things that taste absolutely nothing like 'alcohol' in that sense. Plus I don't think the ethenol content in something like a beer or a syder is going to be high enough to overpower the flavours of it's other ingrediants. A nice cold beer is one of the tastiest things known to man in my opinion. Out of curiosity what cyder do you drink? Because if its something like strongbow or some other generic brand. Then yes it does taste like ass. Find yourself a nice scrumpy or small orchid blend.

You might want to look into things like Baileys and Disarono if you think alcohol tastes bad. They taste sweet and creamy. Which is why their usually known as womens drinks. But I say fuck it. I like a nice glass of Baileys now and again. Il enjoy that whilst I'm drinkin friggin moonshine out of a cask. LOL
I have tried several kinds of alcohol and cider so far is the only bearable one (and even that's watered down). You'd be surprised how well I can tell if a drink has alcohol in it, I'm like a damn police sniffer dog. I'll admit that vodka for example is different to rum, but they both still have the under current that smells terrible (I've had a taste of vodka, but I couldn't bring myself to drink any rum because like beer it smelt like something had died in it during the brewing process).

I do drink cheap cider, usually Strongbow because it's cheap, I'm broke and I don't want to pay much for something I dislike. I have tasted Magners, a local cider and even some homebrewed cider one of my friends made and assured me was good. I got the homebrewed stuff for free, but Magners and the local brand didn't have a significant taste improvement and so I stick to the cheap stuff.

I'm not too bothered by trying "womens" drinks, but Baileys is fairly expensive compared to what I usually drink. If I convince some of my friends the next time we get togeether to buy some then I will try it.

A beer or three every now and then. I think I've gotten over my phase of swilling vodka in Russian quantities.
I like the conversation and sitting a round a table with cigarettes and the guitar that inevitably comes out.

I drink from time to time. Relaxing in the sun with a cool beer is just lovely and I have to admit I like getting buzzed, but I don't drink for that exact reason.

Yes, probably a bit too much in all honesty, but I love having a drink.
My other half also likes the odd sherbet, so we're probably a good/bad influence on eachother, we normally drink 3 or 4 nights out of the week.
You cannot beat whiskey.

Just something of a curiosity to me... Fellow Escapists, do you or don't you drink alcohol? For either answer, for what reason?
I don't, mainly because I don't like the taste. As I said earlier, just something of a curiosity to me.
Not until nintendo will fart out a good game, not in the million years!
And your reasoning?

I'm A: too young, and yes I know there are people younger than me getting drunk, but I couldn't care less.
and B: No. Never for me, I don't actually ever plan to get drunk in my life, judge if you will but I can have fun without getting zozzled. I also have family that drinks, and smokes, and they have put me off for life.

I used to drink like a baleen whale, but I kinda ruined that for myself by fucking around with NyQuil. Used to drink several bottles of wine/half a bottle of vodka in a single night, now I have a hard time keeping beer and Bailey's down. I call it my liver's retribution.

I do not consume alcohol, however I do sometimes partake of a good frothy mug of seltzer. By the way, nice user icon.
Thank you, thank you very much. :D

Drink, yes, get drunk, not particularly, no. I like drinking a bit when out with friends/there's an occasion to, I like the taste of some alcoholic drinks and I like the feeling a well dosed amount of alcohol can leave you with, but I never get drunk enough to fall flat on my face/get sick/get a hangover/etc.

So it seems the main reason for not drinking would be alcoholism in the family, and the main reason for drinking would be because you find it enjoyable, and/or social. Thank you all, fellow Escapists!

And not liking the taste is no excuse - there's a huge variety of different brands and flavours you can get, you can't hate all of them.
If all else fails, mix some vodka in with your favourite soft drink and taste is no longer an issue.
All types of alcohol share a common taste.
Not really - a beer tastes nothing like a WKD (although why you'd drink that shit is beyond me) or even vodka. I know what you mean by saying that you can just tell when something's got alcohol in it, but no way do they all share a common taste.
All consumable forms of alcohol are made by the fermentation of different fruits, vegetables, and grains. Fermentation produces ethanol, and ethanol is what makes your drink alcoholic. The taste of ethanol is what I'm referring to. Some people can't stand it.

Wow you sound exactly like me. I can taste alcohol in ANYTHING, and Cider is the only kind I like. I'd recommend Woodchuck Amber Cider. It's sweeter than most ciders, not nearly as dry, and very reasonably priced. It's made in Vermont and used to be fairly exclusive to the area, but they've been expanding their market, and I see it in more places all the time.
