Australian here. Been brought up understanding sharks and how they act, so i'd have to say i'd feel more safe around sharks because i can understand them and how to react around them.

i dont think i'd survive a tussel with a bear...to be honest, if i saw one bearing down on me, i'd pack my dacks and sprint for the nearest tree...

I'm Canadian, any Canadian who would say sharks is a failure at the third grade!

For you non-canadians, Ill give you a bit of the secret to bear taming.
1.Get alot of maple syrup.
2.Find a moose.
3.Kill it, spill its blood into the maple syrup.
4.Then confront Steven Harpor and tell him to Porogue parlement. Dont skip that, that step is important.
5.Find a bear.
6.??????
7. Manliness and profit.

[sub]Bears because they usually don't attack humans and I would imagine being killed by a bear would be nicer than a shark. Shark has a possibility of drowning as well, so no.[/sub]

Bears, because you can be friends with bears. If a bear lived with you from birth, it would be a buddy.

Well bears, for one I live on land and have some what of a "home field advantage"... kinda. With sharks I can't swim very fast and I would be easy prey for a shark, at least i have some what of a chance surviving a bear. so yeah, bear

Thanks to the Office i am now more comfortable around sharks. cuz if i can make it to land im free, but bears can climb even faster than they can run (which is pretty fucking fast) also there are significantly less shark attacks than bear attacks per year.

I'm gonna say sharks. Bears are just as brutal, but significantly more aggressive. Being around a shark would be less likely to result in a mauling.

I'd feel safer around a bear because if things do go downhill I'd have a much better chance of surviving a bear attack.

Well I'd assume we are talking about being right up close and personal in the animal's territory.
In which case I would feel a lot better around sharks, because a shark will only attack something if it is hungry because they are animals that cruise freely through the ocean and never really call a place home. Also given that sharks can last on just one meal per month it seems unlikely he'd go for me, also if I was around sharks I'd be in a boat gazing on with awe.

But bears... well if I was really close to a wild bear it may attack me in self defence or because it thinks I'm endangering its territory. Because a bear does make claim to a patch of area and will think I'm invading its personal space and in all likelihood try to kill me as a result.

P.S I have actually swum with sharks no less than twice and I gotta say, they aren't that bad.

Sharks. You can fight of a shark. How would you fight of a bear?

If your wondering you can punch the nose to confuse them, eye gouge them or go for the gills.

I'm talking Great White/Tiger/Bull sharks. And Grizzly or Kodiak Bears. Any Brown Bear really.

Now which do you feel safer around?

In Truth, Bears avoid people and are rather shy. They are attracted by human food, garbage, or hunter-killed game. So if you are careful with your food, You'll be allright. Usually bears ignore people in the wild.

Sharks are dangerous as well, but normally pose little threat to humans. Again, it's the circumstances that attract sharks to humans. They're just looking for food. Humans are too bony to be appropriate prey, and are confused with seals or such.

Personally, I'd feel safe around either normally. Though I love sharks. I'd probably feel better around sharks, because I'm more familiar with their behavior.

Now if Megalodon still existed, Nobody would dare swim in the ocean at all. Normal sharks teeth are about an inch long. Megalodon had 6.5 inch teeth. They estimate his length to be up to 67 feet.

Well since you say Great White and the like, I would say bears, because unless that bear is a mother protecting its cubs, you can usually bluff your way out of the problem. Bear are such bullies: Bold if you show fear, but total cowards if you don't.

Sharks, on the other hand, can be very hard to understand, as we still haven't figured out their mental patterns. This can prove far more dangerous when in their presence.

I wouldn't be too concerned about any of the brown bears, maybe a mother grizzly with her cub, thats a problem situation waiting to happen anyways. But in the bear department I would be very worried about a Polar bear. Pretty much to the same degree as a Great White Shark. Both can do serious damage in very short order if they want to.

To avoid a bear, run downhill then cut to the side quickly, or play dead.

To avoid a shark, pray.
