I think this is quite appropriate;

Personally, I kind of understand when people get angry because their flag has been burned or destroyed as a deliberate 'fuck you', but your example of getting angry when you see a flag that is merely in disrepair seems a little bit much to me.

I'm an American, and I don't respect our flag. Not only am I not particularly proud of my country, I don't really get into the whole "attaching great meaning to a rectangle of cloth" thing. I just don't care.

People have their right to burn the American Flag so nope, it's just another piece of fabric that'll be manufactured in China anyway

I get extremely angry, I believe disrespecting the flag should be considered a criminal act, punishable by severe fines and possible jail sentences.
That's kind of a fascist attitude.

I refused to say the pledge of allegiance in school, partially because it unconstitutionally references god, and partially because I'm not pledging allegiance to a flag. That could be considered disrespect. Should I be fined for refusing to partake?

*note* I'm an American, and get a lot of jingoistic, fascist attitude for not venerating the flag like a golden idol.

I find it a little weird when anyone gets really angry over disrespect over a country's symbolism (Unless the symbol is a living thing).

Like.. If someone were to insult the royal family, I don't think I'd get mad, but that could be because on most comedy shows, people just rip into the royal family like mad. Maybe just having people poke fun at and critique your country's symbols is a good thing, as it stops you from getting worked up over nothing.

If someone spilt a cup of tea I'm hardly going to flip out and attack them in blind patriotic idiocy.

I'm from England just for those of you unable to keep up.

No, but I'm not sure how anyone CAN disrespect the welsh flag. DRAGONS PEOPLE.
OT: I don't really care about the German flag all that much. It has a lot of meaning historically, but that's not really worth getting angry about.
The only thing that slightly annoys me are Neo-Nazis who fly the Empire's flag (black-white-red) in lieu of being able to use a 3rd Reich flag.
Not because I'm particularly fond of the 2nd, but because it's fucking stupid, especially when you think about Hitler's rejection of everything imperial.

It truely baffles me the amount of.... emotional investment people put into their countrys' flag. You can go on and on about how many people died for what the country, but how many of those people died for what your country represents NOW? Example, Americans (Just because its the best example of the severe patriotism and where this reason is given most), yes your flag is a symbol of the people who died in the civil war, the rebellion against the british and all the rest, but is your country now what those people fought to protect and create? Is it the bastion of light and freedom it was suppose to be?

Being British and thinking about it now, our flag? Over hundreds of years, the wars we have had have been pretty plentiful and varied, so could I sum all the deaths in the name of our flag as because of my country? No, because my country no longer holds those ideals really, and so is not that country anymore.

So no, a flag only holds as much importance as you put into it. Hardly about to go around burning flags, but only because I put no importance to any flag so what would be the point?

Edit: Anyone care to explain to me WHY they are so patriotic about their flag personally? Other than linking wiki and to show why the flag was designed the way it was, tell me why you would get angry about someone disrespecting it because it stands for (insert personal meaning here)?

Yeah, but Neo-Nazis aren't known for their deep thoughts or attention to detail, generally.

American here, grew up under two Marines, and am Enlisted myself. I don't care if a civilian disrespects the flag. They can do what ever the hell they want, and I expect no better from them. Now, If the owner was military then I'd just shit miles of rage snake to strangle them with (I love saying that). We've got standards damnit.

I dont mind particularily, but then I dont attribute many meanings to the flag. I can only really see it as a symbol for the unification of England, scotland and wales under the crown, and if someone disagrees with that then that might annoy me slightly. Carelessness doesnt bother me particularly though, perhaps because I see that as part of the britian the flag stands for.
Perhaps it's because I dont have a clear understanding for what England stands for, or the ideals it was based on, and so dont know what meaning I should apply to the flag.

I live in Quebec, disrecpecting the Canadian flag is like a national passtime. That said, no real feelings either way, I find patriotism and jingoism to run too close together for my taste.

Actually, a law was passed a few years back, making it so all American flags must be made in the US.

OT: I was in the US Navy stationed in England. Protests were held outside base every week (Tuesdays if I remember correctly). Every week I saw the American flag stepped on, written on, and otherwise disrespected. I had no problems with it, and I still don't.
When someone decides to burn or otherwise disrespect a US flag, I take it as a victory. I served in the Navy to support and defend the rights and freedoms of my fellow Americans. If someone chooses to use that right to protest by using the flag in a horrible way, then let them. It is their right. The right I worked to defend. Whether they are American or not.
