My entire faith in humanity is riding on one person.

However, that was severly put in jeopardy after hearing about Mr. Rashleigh.

Ugh. I really don't know.

For every bit of progress, there's a setback.

For every seemingly intelligent person, there's an idiot or asshole that makes me want to commit genocide, and kill the whole species...

It's really hard to decide wether it's worth having faith in any of it.

No. The few good people in the world are not enough to redeem us as a species. Why we haven't been wiped out yet is beyond me.
Doth speak the truth.

But the only thing that keeps a litte tiny bit of my faith up is the people I meet on the internet, sure alot are idiots, but some are really smart and nice :]

Wow. A lot of the replies seem to set different groups of people up against each other.

Fact is that eventually, when you get out of school and into real life, there's isn't groups so much anymore. Just a gigantic stream of individuals. Sure some of them share certain characteristics, but at the end of the day everyone just wants a meal and a bed.

I had a day off today, and I spent it drinking tea from India, smoking tobacco from America, and eating fruit from I don't even know where. I read an english book, and there's a thousand new ones coming out each year, of which I'm sure at least a dozen are good.
Humanity (still) produces beautifull things.

There's plenty good in the world. I guess that it's all a state of mind.
And though there's a lot of bastards out there, there are very few genuinely 'bad' people.

Edit: However, I'm sure we're bound to die out at some point. Probably a nuclear war or something stupid and completely preventable. Things are supposed to end, like my cup of tea, my life, and the human race, too. Just saying that at this moment, life is good. Humanity isn't all that bad. It's not about 'still having hope left', 'tis about enjoying what's there.

I'm afraid your question is misleading. Faith requires belief without proof of existence, as akin to a god's existence. Not exactly a human condition. And optimism? Hah. Optimism for humanity requires that I turn in half my brain for a toaster. The trouble with human people is that for me to be hopeful of your future (Now, there's a good phrase.), I would have to forget all the dictators and psychopaths and wrongful accusations and unfair treatment of others and so forth and so on, all the things that I plainly see as obviously wrong and would never do even on my worst day. Not to sound so damn superior, but why would I want to attack Iraq after seeing a similar problem with Vietnam when the problem was Afghani terrorists?

So, faith? Optimism? Hopefulness? Not really. Just a wish. One wish. I wish you luck, because you'll need every scrap of it, and because I am along for the ride no matter what I think about it.

Humanity will be fine.

It's easy to fall into "we're all doomed" ways of thinking, especially when you hear about the minority of nutbags out there in the world, but the reality of most people's lives is far from that. More people have prosperity now than at any other time in human history. Standards of living have never been higher, even most poorer countries are better off now than they were 50 years ago. The amount of wars being waged globally is relatively low now compared to what it has been over the last 30 years. Advancements in food production technology means that there is now actually enough food to feed all the world's people, and then some. World population is levelling out. People actually care about the environment now. Technology is improving constantly, especially in fields that will secure humanity's future over the long term such as alternate energy and biology. If you turn off all the negativity on the TV for a second, there's many reasons to be genuinely optimistic.

Sorry to burst people's doomsday fantasies, but the big-ass mondo humanity-cleansing catastrophe is simply not going to happen at anytime within our lifetimes.

That's an interesting way of seeing it and I agree wholeheartedly. It is, to a degree, pure conjecture to think about whether humanity as a whole "deserves" to still be here and how long we will still be here ... and that's really what the question (optimism about humanity) is about. Instead, we should look at the little niche we've carved out for ourselves and decide whether we can enjoy the things we have, no matter how small or mundane they are. Reading an English book, enjoying Indian tea, relishing American tobacco. Or even ... having a friendly chat with your neighbor or the cashier the next time you go grocery shopping. Saying hi to the elderly person you encounter when you step outside the store.

In the end, it's pointless to think about the race as a whole. It's on a set of tracks we, as individuals, will never be able to influence. All we can do is make sure our immediate surroundings are positive and worth living in. In this case, I think pessimism is the wrong approach.

I still have faith in humanity because even with all the complete idiots out there making it seem as though we're doomed, there's a (probably) equal number of people doing the exact opposite, just we don't notice them as much.
hmm... well yeah- pretty much this
I do feel humans are dumbening slowly but as long as there are intelligent/friendly/ awesome people then I still have faith
I do think the situation is not great though- but hey what are you going to do?

and it is my typing fingers and NOT my ass that is lazy

I lost faith in humanity when the makers of the new Ninja Gaiden put out that they would use the PS3's six axis to allow you to jiggle a certain female characters breasts... or how about the invention of the sex box? Or how about a creator of a giant robot show claiming video games are unproductive...

Well, having no faith in humanity because you're a whiney teenager is pretty meaningless.

But having no faith in humanity because there's still so much violence in the world makes sense I guess.

That said, it's a very radical statement to make. NO faith in humanity? To harbour an opinion like that you'd have to think that you yourself were the only sane, rational and clever person in the entire human race. Some people have NO faith in humanity. They are lunatics. Some people are just cynical and grumpy.

And why wouldn't you?

Such a big topic and such a short and untelling answer, from the OP no less...

I'm somewhat optimistic. Although I'm fairly certain that the number of intelligent people will decrease dramatically within the next century.

Too many stupid people having too many stupid kids.
