No, but sometimes there's a tune that I actually like.

Chiddy Bang is fantastic, I love them!
A fair amount of Gorillaz songs is Hip-Hop, you've probably never heard of that one.
Hip-Hop is generally a blunt no for me but as I said, occasionally I find one of my liking.

Gorillaz = Trip-Hop not Hiphop

Yeah, some of it. I like '80s and '90s hip hop more than current mainstream stuff, which seems indistinguishable from pop music anyway. I know there are great underground artists out there, though, but being in Australia, most of the underground hip hop I get access to is either from here or New Zealand.

But yeah, '80s and early 90s hip hop is great. And for more exploratory trip-hop stuff, Massive Attack is one of my favourite groups of all time. Some of their stuff maybe isn't hip hop, but Unfinished Sympathy and other songs of that flavor totally are.

I know that I don't belong in this converstaion, but I hat Hip Hop.
My "hat" is off to hip-hop as well, but I wonder if you are listening to the right kind?

Anything mainstream is pretty much garbage. That's why you "lover" classic rock, country, and classical. They are "classic" because quality was important long ago.
I'm a fan of those genres too! Nothing wrong with the old stuff.

Still, it's good to keep an open mind. When checking out "the new stuff" try digging around sites of independent artists, audio-portals, and general music sharing. You might find that the REAL hip-hop isn't so bad.

(p.s. My bus plays mainstream hip-hop/pop too. I know your pain)

To be honest, I can't stand hip hop, mainly due to the people I see preforming it and the peole I see listening to it. Its, in my opinion, a crappy genre of music.

Having said that, The Gorillaz are one of my favourite bands, and hip hop. But alot of their songs don't feel like conventional hip hop. So yeah, I'll stick to my rock xD
I saw your post Zenoaugustus and as a rabid hip-hop fan i had to contribute. Mr Deverfro's opinion is one shared by many who weren't exposed to the best examples of what the genre has to offer. The thrash that you hear on the radio is NOT indicative of the scene.
Common, The Roots, Kanye West (yes MR West IS a Genius any real hip-hop fan will attest),
MF DOOM (the GREATEST), J Dilla (far to underrated to this day), Nujabes (also quite underrated RIP to his Genius) KRS-ONe the list goes on and on...

I'm kind of fired up now lol
Ha ha, Yeah, What I know of hip hop is what I heard on radio one -.- and I like that "Mr.Deverfro" xD

I've seen the term Trip-Hop so let me investigate. *One Wikipedia browse later.

It seems that all their songs never fall under Hip-Hop but rather different sub-categories like Trip-Hop, Alternative Hip-Hop and others.

Why am I using a site for genres? Because I don't know squat about how to call a song of a genre.

Of course, I mostly listen to Jedi Mind Tricks and Deltron. For me it's getting harder to find a song i like anyway. Ludacris is amazing too but only the songs that aren't that serious. Tech N9ne used to be my favorite but for me his songs got old and his new stuff felt like more of the same. His side kicks aren't terribly amazing, but they're nowhere near Tech's level which kills them.

A little bit, I have little of it though.

The only hip-hop song I really enjoy a lot is Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz.
Oh then you'll like Deltron since their main rapper is the rapper in that song Del The Funky Homo Sapien.

I really like Aesop Rock. I think he's one of the most interesting musicians out there, period. He's one of the few people in any genre whose lyrics I closely listen to.

I also like the Roots, Kanye West, Jurassic 5, El-P, Jedi Mind Tricks, Dr. Octagon, Dizzee Rascal, the Streets and a lot of 80s-early 90s artists (Public Enemy, De La Soul, Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest). I also love the Beastie Boys, and I think they've done a great job of staying relevant over the years.

I really have to start exploring more: I know that there are lots of other good things that I just haven't heard yet.

Often when people discuss music on the website, I see that many people put they like just metal, or most music that isn't hip hop and country.
Hahah, pretty much everyone I know, when asked what kinds of music they like, will always end up saying something like "oh, you know, I like pretty much everything--just not country." It's kinda funny how easily entire genres can be dismissed--and hey, up until a few years ago I was totally dismissive of hip hop, fool I was...

But yeah. I totally love Run-DMC, Public Enemy, some Mos Def, Beastie Boys and RZA stuff.. Lifeseeker, who had a song in Dead Rising, is thoroughly awesome.. So, uh. Yeah!

I actually perform some hip hop (not exclusively, 'cause as a listener of all types of music, I also like to play all sorts of original songs in my band [singing/sometimes rapping drummer]), so definitely.

And it's not to say that musicians themselves gain some 'greater understanding' compared to those who don't play an instrument; whether it be solo, with a group, in front of people or not. It doesn't matter. That's pure pretentiousness. It's also why I opted out of going to music college. I was in choir for half my life, had about a year's worth of lessons on drums and learned everything else by ear. Music theorist types kill it for people like us.

I like all forms of music. I "latch" onto certain artists I feel truly make a difference in the big picture and in my life.

And I'm pretty sure artists weren't the ones who started this "genre classification" thing.
Reminds me of this video my friend posted awhile back that involved a neurological study on creativity and improvisation. Some of it's really interesting, no doubt, but they weren't artists. The ones in the MRI thing were.

And that's the key word here: Artists. It's not just music. It's a process like any other, that we pour our soul into. When I'm singing on-stage or drumming, I'm figuratively naked, in full expression, and nervous too sometimes, but I man up and do it. I may zone out in a jam and it can take me somewhere I couldn't even think possible; maybe listen to a recording afterwards, trying to remember, and use it for something further down the road. And I don't expect every single human being to love or even like what I do. That's what I listen for; to find what I personally like or don't regardless of outside influence. It's the same reason I watch tons of movies, play tons of games, draw, etc.

Escapism. What good is a forum for a site that boasts and promotes this, if people are constantly questioning it?

cue flames.

I like some hip hop, but just really specific artists. Can't say I'm a fan of any specific genre per se.

good hip hop or rap or whatever label would you give the artists i like, is close to my heart...

it doesent matter if its published on mtv or if its gangsta or underground, as long as it sounds good and it has a story to tell (and im not talking about that "money, cars, hoes package")...

there was a time in my life (high school mostly) that i hated pop, country, rap, and other thing that all the "sheep" would listen to because i thought of myself as a punk rocker. i relies now, i was a poser. now i'll give anything an open-minded chance. now i like pop music and other thing others find popular. who am i to say that what someone else likes is shit (except for a few instances)? i've been on the defending end of that band is shit argument.

I never used to, but I have now made an exception: I like it IF it's accompanied by kick-ass street dancing.

Also the Gorillaz are just generally awesome.
