Hell no, why should I? My government gives me a reason to show respect I will. Until this day I have yet to see that.
American? Me too!

Not at all. Back in high school I had drawn a Canadian flag in a book of mine and pledged allegiance to that. For the record, I was a teenager in George Double-ya Bush's America at the time
Don't forget, no child left behind!! Hate that kid.

I love my country's flag. I'm a hardcore patriot and I get pissed when I see people, especially fellow countrymen, burn it. I respect the pattern of the flag and what it stands for.

Wow, it's a serious day on the Escapist... this is the third quasi-patriotic thread I've come across in the last 30 minutes.

I wouldn't stand for it being burned or purposefully desecrated, but I don't need a flag to remind me why I love my country.

A flag is a symbol, nothing more. I respect what it might represent, but I'm not offended if someone rips one to pieces and burns it in front of my house (unless they don't clean up the mess). Furthermore, I don't really care about my country. Sure, I like it here, but I'm not patiotic or anything.

I grew up in a military, conservative family. In front of every house we ever lived the American flag waved. It was a sacred icon of patriotism to America. Every week, we washed it. Every single one was to be treated with respect. Hand over heart, eyes to the flag during the national anthem. To desecrate one was an act of treason. I don't know about you guys, but do you respect and love your nation's flag?
That is ceepy cult behavior.

I respect what the Canadian Flag stands for, even though it's a history of our country as the bastard child of two European nations that hated each other (that's you, England and France), instead of an ideology, but at the same time it is it's own thing. Yes the colours are those of the aforementioned European nations, red being english and white being french (I know right, it's like they're begging for it), but it's an individual thing that was merely the product of that odd little relationship. So yes, I respect the flag as a symbol for something greater, but the individual copies really are just cloth. That said, of course I'd try to take care of a flag in my possession, no point in wasting a good flag.

Well, some extremists in Afghanistan burned the swedish flag because they thought we should had done something about Dennmarks media for releasing a picture-contest of Muhammed. Twice.

I didn't get offended, I was laughing my ass of. xD
You know what got me laughing about the whole deal? When I saw the official apology [http://www.danishmuhammedcartoons.com/ApologyEnglish.html] issued by a support group of the Jylland Post.

No, because after all the horrible things my country has done (including the genocide of the Native Americans, slavery, Jim crow laws, forced medical experiments, Japanese american concentration camps, etc etc) it seems to me that my country is filled with evil sociopaths and I refuse to lie and say that it is a "good" system. Now, almost every other country may be even worse, but I don't believe that respect should be given just because of someone being the "lesser evil."

That's nothing compared to reciting the pledge of allegiance in school. I'm told people actually do that in the USA. Now that's creepy cult behaviour.

I dont have one outside my house but i like both the Union flag and the English flag. It is a massive part of the countries culture, whether you like it or not, and its a symbol of your identity, even if your country has been through bad things, its also been through good things.

I don't really respect the American flag. It's supposed to stand for what the US is supposed to stand for: freedom, equality, justice, etc. In reality, not everyone in the US is considered equal, there is a great amount of injustice, and we're only as free as the strictest laws allow us to be (not all laws are bad, but things like cannabis being illegal is pretty stupid).

So no, I don't really respect the symbol of a country that doesn't even follow it's own philosophies.

Used to, but now it's associated with the BNP.
And the English flag is used by the EDL. So, it's a symbol of racism to me.

Shame really.
