normal people choose normal difficulty, real badasses start on the hardest difficulty, and they also set the controller on fire

As a rule I play on normal and then move on to hard/very hard after I've finished it. But I will switch down to easy if I get stuck, I'm not paying for a game and then not playing it because it's too hard (The only game I can remember doing this on recently is Dead Space).

I like to start my first playthrough with the easiest mode to get to know the surrounding and the story. If I like it I try a harder setting.

I always start off on normal, save for a few games where I literally want to do nothing.

Normal first, unless I'm familiar with the gameplay/controls. My gamer skills (that sounded so nerdy!) are decent enough normally to adapt to a fairly-titled Normal difficulty setting. I'll only go back to Easy if the game is too difficult for me.

I always play my first play-through on easy, just so I can enjoy the game and not get stressed out about it.
Then once I finish, if I like the game enough, or if there's a bonus achievement for playing on "hard," I'll replay it on the hardest setting.
I've done this for Halo 3, Gears of War 2, COD 4, MW2, and Just Cause 2.

I always start at normal difficulty. Never had the urge to restart right away at hard difficulty, though I sometimes replay the game in a higher difficulty for challenging reasons.

Never played on easy, though.

First time I play on the difficulty that's below the hardest, or hardest if there's none between hardest and normal. I mainly do it to make the game longer, or feel more substantial. I've been gaming long enough that normal feels kind of easy as well.

Sequels I play at their hardest i.e Bioshock 2 immpossible, no vita chambers
Games from new genres easy i.e Kings bounty: ArmoUred princess
Normal every when else

I always start on normal then move up the difficulty like a ladder in subsequent playthroughs.
The only exception to this was Resident Evil 5 which I started on hard, every reviewer said that if you want the horror experience normal just doesn't cut it, too easy.

I usually downgrade rather than upgrade. I always want to be really challenged, so I tend to opt for Hard- or whatever is usually the third level up- then more often than not I have to switch that to Normal, or even Easy sometimes (screw you, several Modern Warfare 2 missions). I'd hate to run through a new game on an Easy level without trying the harder ones first.

Though I do count levels like 'EPIC', 'GOD', 'BLOODY GRIZZLED VETERAN' etc. to be special feats I might attempt one day rather than mountains I have to immediately tackle.

I generally start at normal or easy until I get a feel for the game and then switch to the harder difficulty settings later on or on the next playthrough.

I can't live with myself if I don't play on hardest difficulty setting no matter how difficult. The only game that i couldn't beat on the highest difficulty was Lost Planet on Extreme. Couldn't pass first level without getting raped in 30 seconds by the boss. It almost made me shed a tear of frustration (almost).

I always set it to the hardest setting and leave it at that untill I finish the game, even if it's kicking my arse I will refuse to change it.

It isn't too bad these days anyway, hardmodes now don't tend to be as punishing as the older games used to be.

Depends on the game. Unless its an RTS ill start on Normal. For RTS however ill do a skirmish on easy just to get the hang of things. Screw tutorials. They are boring.
