I've read 'professional' reviews where they basically wank the game off for five pages and give massive, not small, but massive spoilers. Yahtzee is basically the other extreme and I find having a more cynical bitchy approach to a game a lot better then the type where they are like a clingy girlfriend that are far too dependent on there boyfriend.

In the end I don't take everything he says seriously and I don't let his views ruin my thoughts on whether a game is bad or not. I like his reviews though because at least unlike the guys that wank off the game on and on he actually points out potential flaws.

Yahtzee makes a lot of valid points on gaming but I take his reviews with a grain of salt. Not everyone is going to agree with yahtzee on wether or not a game is bad. For example, yahtzee unconditionally hates Jrpgs(with a few exceptions) and fighting games but those genres have a lot of fans. They aren't fanboys of those genres for liking them . Those aren't fanboy games for being praised by their audience. After all, all popular games have a lot of fanboys, even silent hill and tim schafer games.

I find yahtzee's views on gaming very convincing but Idon't always fully agree on his
opinions on quality of games. I didn't portal was the greatest game of all time and I fucking love smash brothers. I also think that people should turning his comment thread into flame wars.
That second paragraph was unreadable. Use proper English please. And also who doens't take the reviews with a grain of salt. Was this thread really necessar?. Sorry for being mean, but come on.
his/her second paragraph wasn't unreadable he dose not even have any spelling errors in the second paragraph were as in your "proper English" comment you have two. also if this thread isn't necessar<(you're proper English) then your comment was doubly unnecessary, but anyway lets all be friends, and not let our proper or anti-proper English get in the way of how great we all are.
Good call on catching my mistakes. I knew I should have read that again. I type horribly. But it doesn't take away from the fact that leaving entire words out makes posts nearly unreadable. Nor does it take away from the fact that this thread is useless as it asks us to discuss something overly obvious. Why not just ask "Do you think Michael Atkinsin takes things a little too far"

I should have used spellcheck and I really hope I spelled everything right here, but I kind of doubt it.

"Do you really need someone in authority giving you a simple "yay" or "nay" before you buy anything? Why don't you roll over so they can stamp on the other side of your face?"

and

"It's worth remembering that all reviews are subjective personal opinions and if you personally enjoy the game, then they shouldn't really get to you. Unless of course there's a despicable little niggling doubt in the back of your mind, that maybe you're not having as much fun as you've convinced yourself you're having, which doesn't go away no matter how many times you try to slap it down with the wet flannel of weak excuses"

I appear to agree with him on many points, so I take them as reviews.

Although I hated Saints Row 2 and loved GTA IV.

I dont even see him as a reviewer.
I donzt think he does either
Extra Punctuation seems to be where he is attempting to break out of the angry comic role and into actual game journalism. I rather enjoy the Extra Punctuation segments, as Ben has some really great observations about the industry and he doesn't easily buy into the hype and bullshit that many other reviews seem to do.

Yes, Zero Punctuation should be taken with a pinch of salt, its formula and bile and often times funny. That doesnt invalidate the truth of the argument but a good 75% of ZP is Hyperbole for the sake of humor.

I can honestly say I don't take anything he says with a grain of salt, his reviews are basically a list of "What is wrong with this game (with Comedy)" and as he says; Whatever he doesn't complain about is Fine, what he actually Praises is Awesome (granted I don't always agree with him/think he forgot to mention some tidbits... He's still right like 90% of the time and the other 10% is a matter of different opinions.)

I don't see when/how he was discredited so much...

To be completely honest, I have agreed with him on every reviews he's made. Even games I unconditionally love I agree with. Like the Mass Effect 2 review he did. All the points that pissed him off about the game, also pissed me off. Sure, he's harsh and terse, but he always has good points. *shrugs* But people still ***** about his reviews. Whatever though, its not like your browser doesn't have a "Back" button.

I take his reviews from a purely objective standpoint. Yes, most of the games he reviews have glaring issues with them, and he's here to point them out. Even some of the games he praised (Call of Duty 4, Prince of Persia) I tried and greatly disliked. Like most other reviewers, he has his opinions and makes very valid points, but even some of the ones he hated (Indigo Prophecy. I really like it!) still have great elements and can be enjoyable if people like that sort of thing.

No, I don't generally take Yahtzee's reviews with a grain of salt. I think he does bring up a lot of valid points about games. I really do agree with a lot of his points about the Wii, though and I laugh because they're true, as I am a Wii owner. Yahtzee's more of an... Entertainer as opposed to a full-on game reviewer. A lot of the points he's made I greatly agree with, like say Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for example. I also agree with what he had to say about Soul Calibur. Yes, he is rather harsh and a bit terse, but that's why I love watching ZP. Sure people ***** about what he has to say, but people generally find something to ***** about in everything. Peeps really need to lighten up...

Of course. They're more comedy than anything else, not really meant to be taken seriously
Thats about it for me. He is trying to be comedic, not write reviews of the most honest sense. Sort of like a Gonzo Game Reviewer.

I don't buy every new, shiny game to come out, and when I do buy a game, I want an experience that was worth the money, Yahtzee's great for me because he does tend to review games based on how much fun he had with them. I'm not expecting the new Mass Effect or Bioshock sequels to shake the core of my soul, I'm expecting something that won't make me regret passing on a blowjob.

I don't even really think that honest-to-god reviews should be taken with any less than a grain of salt. Let's face it, only you know if you're going to like something or not. Critical review only judges something based on it's merits in comparison to others of it's kind. You may well like something despite the fact that it's technically worse than something else. Hell, you may -really- like it. Let's face it, all we really want to know about are the bad things about a game (even the nit-picky ones) because we can easily discern the good for our own non-connoisseur selves.

Yatzee, in my ass-kissing opinion is the most "useful" type of critic, because his reviews contain the only two qualities that approach necessity.

Humor and scathing-criticism.

Shouldn't any reasonable person take any opinion with a grain of salt? But anyway, I can't take his reviews too seriously cause our preference of games are too drastically different. Mainly what we seek from a game as players. I play games for the sake of playing the game or as a sport where getting better opponents and competition and depth of a game are why I play (my favorite games being Super Street fighter 2 Turbo, Guilty Gear X2 AC, and Starcraft). And he plays them more as a choose your own adventure novels or interactive machinima where the game play is simply a method of experiencing a the world the game is presenting.(and his being Portal, Silent Hill 2, and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time).
In any case i think he is the best game reviewer out there and I have always enjoyed his work.

You should take all reviews with a grain of salt. Yahtzee's points are generally good, but most of the time it comes down to personal taste. A lot of the things he complains about might not bother other people. You don't have to agree with him to enjoy his reviews. In fact, many of my favorite episodes are from games that I actually liked.

Naturally. I don't think I would buy a game based on whether or not he recommends it. I watch him because his videos are comedy first, review second.
