I once met this girl on Halo 3 when playing with my friends on Xbox Live. She was AWESOME! She was on the other team, but I couldn't deny her skill. She had more points than anyone!

When I was playing Modern Warfare 2 by myself online, I found her again. I sent her a message saying how awesome she was. I bet her I could beat her in a sniper match just between us (I am best when I has sniper rifle). I won, 25 to 24! The next day, I met her in my math class (IRONY).

So yeah, depending on who you are, male or female, you could SUCK, or you could totally kick everyone's ass!

Usually in FPS's girls seem to be fairly bad but in MMORPG's or RPG's in general they seem to be good.
hurray for stereotyping!

OT: most of the girl gamers that I've encountered online have been pretty good. I don't really think it's a question of whether girl gamers are good at games so much as how many of them are more casual gamers.

As a girl being a gamer yes.
Just because I am a girl does not automatically mean I will be good or bad at games. Now me particularly I suck ass at FPS(why I got myself into playing Uncharted and Bioshock I don't know might just be me being overly masochistic on that level)however give me action, platforming etc...I do really well. RPG not so well. RTS really well and I don't play MMOs at all.

And most of the time I hate playing online anyways so the question kind of defeats the purpose. Although Little Big Planet 1 and 2 the girls who play 90% of the time suck and can't seem to figure out what they're doing.(go headsets and mics?) although the boys half the time aren't any better. I get more guys pissed off at me usually in games than girls and its usually just because I am better than they are. *shrugs*

I don't think that gender has anything to do with your ability to game - I suppose it's because you don't meet as many female gamers as you do male gamers, so the likelihood of meeting a good one is decreased. Not every male gamer is a good gamer, but because there are so many more of them, you're more likely to meet a good male gamer than a good female gamer.

Yeah...this post made more sense in my head. And I don't think you need to play a particular genre of games to be classified as a gamer either. I'm a girl as well, and while I have no idea what constitutes a 'good' gamer, I like to think that we are just as capable as guys in most ways. Except when it comes to like, you know, impregnating women.

Honestly I don't consider girls good or bad at playing games as a whole, I think such a sweeping generalisation would just be sexism. In general though I think the average boy is better than the average girl at video games. Games tend to cater more to masculine skills and appeal more to the male crowd, meaning males consume more of them and so get more practise than females on the whole.

I don't mind if my opponent is male or female, although it's always good to see more females getting involved with gaming with it being considered a hobby that's "just for guys".

Being a girl myself I'd like to be classed as a decent gamer. I don't play COD, or mass effect or any of those kinds of games. I'm more of an RPG based player (if any of you have read my posts before you could gather I hate online play)

But do you consider girls good gamers?
Do you think they are as good as boys?
Do you mind facing a girl online?

I was online once and I was playing L4D some boy was playing with me and as soon as he saw I was a girl he left the party sent me a message saying "I don't want to play with you cause you're a girl"
In chat speak mind.

Judged on my sex, yet again.

edit: I know mass effect is an rpg, I meant jrpg's, sorry for the confusion.
It it okay I let a link do some of the talking?
I could send it via Pm...

Also what do you define as a gamer first? As that is more important than gender in regards to the label gamer.

I just wanted to add that a fair amount of (korean) girls game and they excel at them.

Especially online shooters, hell I realized this girl in my class played Halo! However they usually play games like Starcraft and Counter-Strike.

Is it wrong for me to say that this thread offends me? Because it does. Please, don't judge me by my gender, but by how I love games and that I'm pretty good at them too!

*waves* I'm a girl gamer too. And I kick arse when I'm pitted against less experienced players (whether male or female).

Gender doesn't impact on how well you can play a game. Many things do impact, but gender's not one of them.

Whether girls are good gamers or if they are as good as boys can't be answered straight out: 'girls' consist of a lot of individuals. Some girls are going to be good and others are going to suck. So yeah.

And I wouldn't stop playing just cause of someone's gender.

My female friend kicks my ass in Super Smash Bros from time to time...but I don't take that too seriously because she spams the hell outta Toon Link and regular Link with their down thrust sword attack.

Well I think that not all girl gamers are bad just like not all boy gamers are good.
I don't really mind either way.

I don't think gender means much in gaming... I know plenty of men who are better than me and plenty of women who are better than me... though I do have some problems going against them online... especially if they have a headset it makes it easier for them to distract me...<.<

I don't differentiate ability based on gender, and neither should you, because that's the pettiest form of sexism.

To to answer your question, yes I do think they are.
