As for those people that just don't want to give up about piracy:
1. It's not stealing, technically
2. The artists/authors hardly suffer. Why? Because (mostly) the pirates weren't going to pay for the product *ANYWAY*.
1, Technically it's not. ACTUALLY it is
b, if you weren't going to buy it, then you shouldn't have it. I'm baffled as to why so many people say this, paticularly if they thought they weren't going to like it then why not avoid it completely.
The try-before-you-buy argument is COMPLETE bollocks. Play it at a store, or at a mate's place. Read some reviews. Do some research.
Lets just ask this, How many of you who buy magazines sit in the newsagent's and read the whole thing before deciding whether or not you're going to buy it?
What do you think the owner would do?
This is EXACTLY the same
What? Bollocks? Excuse you? How is reading a review the same as trying it yourself? Playing at a store? What do you think I am, a console gamer? And I only know one (mega)store where you can actually play games (that is, one game for one console.. if it's actually playable). I don't know *any* stores that allow you to play PC games.
[Edit] I don't actually have any real-life friends that play video games. Or are you saying I should hop over to the other side of the world to try a game out? [/Edit]
How about this: You're out there to buy a car, but you can't try before you buy. You can *read* about it, reviews, opinions, watch demos at a store.. and how many times do you ask a friend "Hey, can I try your car for a few hours so I can decide whether to buy it myself?". I think your argument is COMPLETE bollocks.
In any case: whatever. I'm glad I uphold this "try before you buy"-policy as it has saved me a lot of money. I can only imagine how many times I would had to buy a game, and experience it:
a. Sucks (This could be anything not to my taste)
b. Is horribly glitchy (Mercenaries 2 for example. That went straight into the garbage bin, buggy piece of...)
c. Too short (The pirated version of Spore didn't have any of that DRM nonsense, and I got a taste of it. It was too childish, and too short. I would have been *really* disappointed if I had bought that with no way to get a refund).
Reviews only do so much. A lot of them are rosey, pink and covered in flowers about how great they are (hurk, halo 3). On the other hand, the reviews pummeled Brigade E5: New Jagged Union into the ground, but that was one of the greatest games I've played. If I did my research "correctly", I would have never touched that game! Instead, I downloaded it and saw it was great. And I bought it.

I didn't know there were magazines that have dynamic content? Mission editors? Mod communities? This argument only counts for single player games that allow no modification whatsoever. .. I also don't read magazines.
Now if you could actually rent PC games, that may have been a consideration. Unfortunately, you can't even return a damn game these days. This is why I have to be absolutely sure it's worth my money.
