I only tend to go to those sites to look at trailers, I don't really look at many reviews.

Apart from the ones here of course.

I normally watch and read reviews on gamespot and ign then watch some gameplay videos, and look to see if zero punctuation has a review. After that I decide whether to buy a game or not. But even this method is not flawless. I bought Oblivion and hated it, despite all the research I did.

I can say for a fact that The Escapist does not and has never taken or received money for any reviews or coverage of a game. The editorial staff decides what to review and how to judge it and there is no connection between them and the advertising/promotions that happen here.

As for the larger review sites, I do know that at least 3 of them (they have already been mentioned in this thread) take money to review games and sell their scores. It's quite pathetic, but they have gone too "corporate" and have sacrificed their morals for increased profit.

IGN is a group of biased idiots who only review games based on popularity and how much the developer paid them to give it a good review.

GTAIV's the best game of the decade, my ass.

gamespot used to be great for reviews, witty, insightful, unbiased. then it got iffier and then the whole Kane and Lynch thing happened. Now I only trust Yahtzee. (I'm also the only person that can actually read his reviews instead of seeing a stream of bile.)
Oh yeah! i enjoy also his methodical ways of reviewing whatever the game is.

No, they are not to be trusted, but still a lot more than that inept amateur that calls himself Yahtzee.
Even though that's an "OH SNAP" comment, you do bring up a good point: amateur reviewers. They may not have extensive gameplay experiences to draw from, but they are honest and usually try hard to give their opinions of the games they review.

For example, our own users aren't getting anything from posting their own reviews here on our forums in the User Reviews section [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/326] and I trust them more than the large corporate review sites.

The three places I trust for reviews are IGN, Gametrailers, and Game Informer, but mostly GI. I don't like what the editors of IGN sometimes say about games, and recently Gametrailers has been giving weird reviews. They'll bash a game while discussing it but give it a great score. Game Informer doesn't seem to fail me, though.

I don't trust the opinions of IGN as much as I used to, because they now rate games based more on what else exists on the system as opposed to what's out there in general, and they don't always qualify it as such. Examples: Red Steel (one of the worst games ever) and The Conduit (fun but thoroughly so-so).

But I do believe them when they tell me that Kid Icarus is coming.

Other sites - meh, I even take the words of Moviebob and Yahtzee with a grain of salt.

S-Sorry, what? I... Just couldn't understand you there, you've got some kind of... accent? 2 seconds, I'll try this Babel Fish.

I think that you should get a game because you liked the previous experience(?) or prequel to the game and you buy that and not base things on reviews.

Still don't get it. What if it's an emerging series, or a one-off?
If everyone followed that logic, no-one would EVER have bought ANY GAMES.
EVER. This site wouldn't exist, there would actually be no games. Anywhere.
How do you feel now? Huh?

Games are too expensive to just buy whatever looks good,
So I look around for reviews from as many places that I can.
Occasionally i look into the "history" of the reviewer, to see how biased they may/may not be.
One single review doesn't usually change my mind, unless they point out something that was missed by others.

But usually Zero Punctuation makes up my mind ;)

I will look at both IGN and Gamespot then read other sites and reader reviews from the people who bought the games of sites like Play.com and Game.
