abandoned Gamespot. They were getting sloppy and dull, and Kane and Lunch was just plain stupid

Usually, I get my heads-up on intresting games from First Previews and suchlike, and if I like the look of a game, I will likely get it regardless of score on any website, unless it's a real stinker across the board. the reviews will just reinforce my decision.

Am I dumb for not knowing what the Kane and Lynch incident is?

I get the idea, but what exactly happened to make them lose all credibility?

No, never. Sometimes I watch them for entertainment, but I never place too much faith in them.

I like their reviews, more for descriptions of gameplay. Neither has ever given me unhelpful or false information.

I don't really go in for review sites. I will look up reviews because they usually include a note or a video of the main game mechanic(s) though their opinions are something I usually disagree with.

I trust some of the That Guy With the Glasses reviewers. Other than that, I tend to look up user reviews on GameFAQs.

I know to take grains of salt with both, but I do trust both places to point out why they have their opinions (overall, in the case of GameFAQs), which will give me an idea of what to expect. I've seen more than one 3/10 review given for reasons I enjoy certain games...

I'm just gonna say try Giantbomb.com it's awesome. If you didn't know it's basically the people that made gamespot good but left after the kane and lynch stuff. Hence why gamespot is a piece of crap now.

I enjoy watching and reading IGN reviews, but I don't base my opinions around what the reviewer says.

Nope. They'll give anything hyped up enough an amazing score. They do it to keep their community happy. If gamespot gave Halo 3 an 8 their twelve year old 360 fanboy fanbase would go nuts and probably leave. I trust The Escapist, although the Modern Warfare 2 review highlighted no flaws in the game whatsoever and there are many flaws in that game so it made me kind of weary.

You can't spell ignorance without IGN.

I read Gamespot's and some magazine's reviews, but of course I always apply my own sense into them. Any review should be treated as directional anyways. Basically most music reviews make me angry and frustrated. That's not the case with games though.

Depends. I use metacritic as a point of reference, then cross reference it with my favorite review sites like Kotaku, Escapist, Destructoid, and Game Trailers. I read Gamespot/IGN reviews occasionally but I don't give em much credit since they are robotic and obviously fixed.

IGN usually just comes off as any title with hype behind it will get a near perfect score despite many apparent flaws while sleeper titles will get lower eights for seemingly no reason. Perhaps to avoid fanboy rage.

That's just my perception. Although continuing along that line I feel 1UP, Gamespot, and The Onion AV Club give more titles a fair shake. I usually temper my expectations through metacritic although even then there will be "bad" games I enjoy (Mirror's Edge, The Darkness) and "good" games I hate (Halo anything, Modern Warfare 2)

I research a bit of the game instead of looking at the reviews. If I do check reviews, I check user ones, or better yet, ask my friends. I feel though that the best way to have an idea on whether or not I like the game would be to have an understanding of what's in it and what it will play like.

Hahahahahahahaaaaa~~ no.

IGN and Gamespots reviews are swayed by payment/advertising I gather and they never give good reasons for high or low scores. There's been some games that I loved that they've given horrible horrible scores. I'll go to them sometimes for a general overview but never, never will I buy a game based off their awful reviews.

The only reviewer I've bought games directly from watching reviews is from Classic Game Room.

He does a great job and reviews all kinds of games.

I try to go to metacritic and go down the list, usually read a few of the top reviews and then start from the worst scores and move my way up. I feel that I get a better perspective on a game when the reviewers are being harsh and overly criticizing certain aspects of the game.

On a flip note, I do not read random "user" reviews of games that I'm truly interested in due to too many spoilers being included in the narrative.
