Do you wish gaming was still "just for nerds"?

It's still not "only for nerds"? Over here, even though most of the people play 360, if you mention a video game other than NHL 11 you're forever labeled a fag. Glad I watch hockey.

I miss pc exclusives.
Nice of you to jump the wagon and calling us console gamers retards (as usual).

Let one of us call one of y'all "elitist jackasses" and all of a sudden we fucked up.
He didn't call anybody a retard. Because "casual" games sold well, more developers are "dumbing down" games to cater to the "casual gamers" so the game will sell well.

I don't hate people who play consoles, nor do I think they are stupid. I tend to hate developers who believe that people who play consoles need another tutorial every five minutes or they will forget which button makes them move forward.
Crysis 2, took the game crysis, made the game completely linear, made the environment boring, gave us lower resolution textures, DX9, and gave the people on pc a console port. While to console gamers, it is a great game, people on PC tend to be more critical.
This is evident in reviews:

I like both consoles and PCs, I still remember gaming on my mother's ancient computer when I was like three, where the screen was all green and the hard drive was I believe 10 megs, so trust me when I tell you, not all games work best on a pc.

After a while, games like strategy and FPSs were obviously better for being pc-only, other games like fighters or Jrpgs on the other hand (games which are pretty much 90% of my gaming time) don't really work best on a pc.

Then again, people here act as though the world is only FPS and nothing else matters, which I suppose would make your perspective differ from mine.

I like that there is more money in it now than there used to be. After all, we wouldn't be able to grow as an art form if we were hemmed in by niche appeal.

He could just mean that since consoles are considered cheaper, more people buy them, and given the hardware limitations of consoles, games often have their wings clipped to get on them. And obviously as there is a wider audience, its generally going to want things to be simpler.

And from that point of view, he is right. Obviously if he is just calling you all retards he isn't.

The context remains the same from where I'm sitting. You may not agree with this, but here's how the evidence appears to me:

console gaming = developers "dumbing down" games for console players = simplifying games so "dumber" can enjoy them

Ergo, by extension: console gaming = simplifying games for "dumber" people to enjoy them. This thus implies that because someone prefers playing games on a 360/PS3 over a PC (such as myself), he/she must be a drooling idiot, completely irrespective of the types of games the person actually prefers.

Like I said, you may not agree with it, but you know I'm (mostly) right.

i like the fact its becoming more accepted in the sense that its letting the industry grow as a whole and more and more people get to experience the fun and awesomeness that is video game (they have just as much right as anybody). i DONT like it because a decent amount of these people treat the gaming community like crap and give us a bad name

No I don't, because you aren't. He even replied to you himself, AND others picked up on the fact that you took it the wrong way.

You sound more like you have a bit of a 'size' issue more than anything else.

I don't want to go back to being a social outcast again just for playing games, but I do wish that game companies would work on making games that aren't just for appealing to the masses and actually make games that are different from each other, rather than just "Realistic Military Shooter 2012 edition"

No. It's fun to have a variety of people play games. Makes it easier to find people that may have interests in other things that you have interests in, which in turn lets you find competent people to party up with. Or at least people that are willing to communicate more.

I wish developers still made certain games as if they were going for a niche, as opposed to everyone on Earth going for mass market appeal, despite that being completely unrealistic in a lot of cases. As for the actual social interactions, why would we ever want to go back? I can talk to a casual Call of Duty enthusiast about game experiences he's never had and have him listen attentively instead of calling me nerd and stuffing my head in a trash bin.

In short. Yes.

In medium. I prefered the games market when there was more focus on appealing to the nerd demographic.

Probably a good 10-15 years ago I recall walking into an Electronics Boutique in the mall and started browsing the games. Soon after a mother, teenage daughter, and younger son walked into the store. I overheard the teenage girl say "Mom! I can't be seen in here. This is the nerd store!" I quietly chuckled to myself.

Nowadays these same girls are WORKING at EB/Gamestop. Gaming has become a more accepted form of entertainment over the years. Even cool people play video games now.

Do you wish it was still more of a niche hobby, or do you like its growing acceptance?
I personally wish that games be open to every one, but was still being built by the nerds.

Now let me qualify that statement.

The ones who orginally created the classic amazing games we all know and love weren't simply in it to make cash, but because they were the true gamers, a term I personally use to describe people who live for all things gaming. They eat, breathe and sleep with games in their minds. They think of games not as entertainment but as a culture which they love and embrace, and that love made them want to push the limits of what they could do with the technology and their imaginations.

We wouldn't have gotten the Mona Lisa if Leonardo Da Vinci was some random dude in it for a paycheck. The Beatles wouldn't have been so popular if they were driven by a committee. All the greatest artisans of our history poured their souls into their works, and that is why they were great.

So I say, let those who want to make games greater than ever be the ones who define what games are made. Let those who truly are gamers be the force behind games, not those who simply do it as a day job.
I think this might be closer to the truth. It seems that gaming shone brighter back in the day, but things have become tarnished. I'm guessing that the OP is a PC gamer, I think it's important to remember that back in the day gaming wasn't even really a term and playing games was split between the consoles and the PC. All the most innovative stuff and new ideas, for the most part, came on the PC. Just after the turn of the century this started to change and this is when the term "gaming" came about. I'm rambling, I do believe that it's games as mass appealed big business the OP laments. Nerds making games for the love of games is what we need more of, not a team of marketers working with giant budjets, taking directions from the board, so the fourth quarter earnings are better.

Ah, whatever. I acknowledge the fact that you don't agree, but best believe I wouldn't have the stance I do if so many people (here on this very site I might add) didn't prove me right. Hell, look at the DA2 fiasco.

But again, whatever. I'm done arguing and I'm sure you are too. So, I'm simply gonna close this and go the fuck on about my business.

Of course not. The fact that now people of any age, any personality can enjoy gaming as it is presented is great. There shouldn't be any limitations to that.

No, I don't know that you're mostly right. Because you aren't. That's not at all what we're saying or implying. What we're saying is that not everyone is a hardcore gamer, so not everyone likes to give much effort in playing or learning a game, thus developers try to make the game simpler and easier to approach a bigger audience.

I pine for the days gone past where a 20 year-old playing a gameboy while waiting for his haircut earned some odd looks. At least we didn't have a bunch of (allow me to use some hideous High School terminology for a moment) posers with Marvel Universe T-shirts who can't name more than 5 of the 70 some characters displayed on said shirt and try to relate to us by claiming to be gamers when their game library includes GoW, Halo, GTA, and every Madden game since 2003. Okay, I'm done being a judgemental ass-hat. It's cool that I don't have to pretend to be looking in my coat pocket very intently for 3 hour whore-killing hours while in line at the DMV, but having to talk to chuckle heads who think that the hottest new release for the year is Killzone 3 (A game that wasn't any good back in it's first title, especially not compared to the competition of the time. (Halo 1)), DOES grind my gears. And since this seems to apply to all aspects of nerd/underground pop culture (comics (as mentioned above), anime, indie bands, Kung-Fu movies, 80's cartoons, etc.), I can't help but feel a little judgemental about how the world has turned our beloved nostalgia into boat-loads of cash that even your Grandma participates in.

I don't mind the broadened audience too much I just wish that they would make more games for gamers like me. I am one of those gamers that actually like hard and challenging games that have a bit of length to them. At the moment unfortunately there are very few of these games left. There are only so many times I can play Super Mario 2, Contra, Battletoads and Megaman 2.
